A first responder himself, Ray was a member of Manhattan’s Engine Co. 30 during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. While battling his own 9/11 related cancer, Ray made over a dozen trips to Washington, D.C. to persuade lawmakers to vote to extend the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health &
I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.
Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to
refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. Making Connections Good Shepherd Hospice Bereavement Department is offering Connections, an 8-week bereavement group program. This program is for children, teens and their caregivers who have experienced the death of a loved. This program is run by both Bereavement Specialist and a Child Life

VOLUNTEER EFFORT - The Afterschool Group (TAG) at H.B. Mattlin Middle School recently volunteered to create get well cards for patients at North Shore LIJ Plainview Hospital. Together, the students created many cards, but were inspired to do even more for the patients. The club opened up the project to the entire school, inviting every student in the building to create a special get well card. The students collected over 200 cards for the hospital while learning a valuable lesson in the small actions they can take to make a positive difference.
COUNTY CHAMPIONS - The Bethpage High School Girl’s Varsity Bowling Team participated in a tournament on January 30th, and for the second year in a row, the team took first place! Nassau County Film Commissioner Debra Markowitz recently announced that Filmmaker submissions for the 2016 Long Island International Film Expo are now open! Filmmakers are encouraged to submit online via FilmFreeway. com, which provides cost-saving, paperless submission to film festivals around the world. LIIFE is the premiere filmmaker community on Long Island sponsored by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation (LIFTF) and the County of Nassau, which shows 150-170 short and feature-length films of every genre from the world over. With a heavy celebrity presence, visits in past years have included a wide range of noted actors and actresses including Steve Buscemi, Ralph Macchio, Ally Sheedy, and so many
more. Focusing on the incredible talent of some of the best independent filmmakers, the expo offers networking opportunities, a 350 seat historic theater, press and media opportunities, a convenient filmmakers lounge and several discussion panels with topics ranging from distribution to scriptwriting, legal music, and a filmmaker panel/breakfast. Syosset High School theater arts students and members of the Association for Creative Thespians (ACT) were treated to a visit from alumna, actress and singer Marissa McGowan. McGowan conducted a workshop with students in which she talked about her career on the stage and screen and provided many helpful tips. Among the students present were cast members of the school’s upcoming production of “Les Misérables,” a show in which McGowan herself starred on Broadway, playing the roles of both Eponine Thenardier and
Cosette. “Working with Marissa was an amazing experience. It was great to get advice and direction from someone who had played [Eponine] before and knew the show so well,” said Templar Wright, who also plays Eponine in the show. “She helped me a lot both with vocals and acting in such a short amount of time and I’m thrilled I had the opportunity to work with her.” McGowan has also appeared on Broadway in “Bonnie and Clyde” and the most recent revival of “A Little Night Music,” as
well as numerous regional theater productions including “The Nutty Professor” and “The Sound of Music.” She has also appeared in film and on television, more recently on TNT network’s “Major Crimes.” The Syosset High School ACT will perform “Les Misérables” on March 10th, 11th and 12th at Syosset High School. Theater arts teacher and ACT adviser Gene Connor is theater director while Kristen Howell is musical director for the show.

Circling the Globe Students at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Syosset recently had the opportunity to circle around the globe from the comforts of their gymnasium during the school’s International Fair. Parent volunteers created and manned
stations representing different countries and cultures from all over the world. Other parents served as “flight attendants” as the students rotated from station to station, learning about the history and customs from each country. Students
participated in yoga while visiting India, played maracas in Mexico and learned what it’s like to be a Viking in Denmark. Parents John and Debra Katz coordinated the event with other Walt Whitman parents.

Students at Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District supplemented their studies of Native American history and lifestyles by participating in “Journeys into American Indian Territory,” a movingmuseum educational program. The daylong exhibition was set up to resemble
a museum, and was comprised of interactive discussions, games, arts and crafts, storytelling, song and dance. Students had opportunities to ask questions and analyze artifacts while being taught the tribal traditions of American Indians. They learned about the significance of particular clothing styles, beadwork, porcupine quillwork,
wampum dolls, drums and many more staples of Native American life, both past and present. The “Journeys into American Indian Territory” moving museum served as a fun and educational way for students to observe firsthand what they are learning about Native Americans in the classroom.
