laugh while teaching us a valuable lesson,” said Dutch Lane student Lucas Mane. The students defined bullying as a group and laid out ground rules for how to implement the Olweus program at their school. The rules are: do not bully others, try to help students who are being bullied, include students who are being left out and tell an adult at school and/ or home if they know of someone being bullied. During the kickoff, students wrote down random acts of kindness they can do to make their school a better place. They then connected them to make one long chain of kindness that reached all around the auditorium. “It was a great way for all of us to see how kindness can quickly multiply to grow into something that is unstoppable,” said Dutch Lane student Gabrielle Hasse. Dutch Lane student Shanjaay Naguleswaran handed out “I Pledge to be Kind” stickers donated by the Hicksville Congress of Teachers to board members. To conclude the presentation, Gabrielle, Lucas, Shanjaay and student Anthony Urena received special certificates of recognition for their part in the kickoff. The district thanks all Hicksville schools for their commitment to this important program and supports all anti-bullying initiatives.

The Hicksville School District kicked off the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program at the board of education meeting on Jan. 22. Olweus is a program designed for students that aims to reduce existing bullying problems, prevent the development of new issues and achieve better peer relations at school. All elementary schools in the district have adopted the Olweus program. Student and staff members from Dutch Lane Elementary School were in attendance to speak on the school’s implementation of Olweus. Principal Janine Rossi described the Olweus professional development courses that were conducted with her staff. In addition to the staff’s courses, a survey was given to students in grade K-5 to gauge an understanding on how they feel during the school day. After preparation was complete, the school planned a kickoff to coincide with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Keeping Dr. King’s philosophy in mind, Dutch Lane students chose the theme “Kindness Rocks” for the event. On Jan. 17, the entire Dutch Lane community gathered in the auditorium wearing their school colors as a sign of unity. During the event, teachers acted out the book “Stick and Stone,” a story of unlikely friendship and mutual respect. “Our teachers made us

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced that registration is currently ongoing for the Town’s Men’s Summer Softball Night League, with games scheduled to begin in May 2020. Games will be held at four parks throughout the Town, and residents and non-residents alike are welcome to sign up for the softball league. “The Town’s Men’s Summer Softball Night League is a fun and competitive softball league that promotes teamwork, friendship, physical fitness and provides a great opportunity for both residents and nonresidents to enjoy their love of the game, and take advantage of our wonderful Town parks and facilities,” said Councilman Imbroto. “So get your team together, and make sure to register early, as our summer softball league is a popular program that is sure to fill up fast!” Games will begin in May 2020 and will be held at 4 different locations: Theodore Roosevelt Park, located on West Avenue in Oyster Bay John J. They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!
Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

prestigious Rutgers Cup after their fantastic season. This season, Plainedge High School’s Football Team brought home the school’s first Long Island Championship, and compiled a perfect 12-0 record for the
season. Supervisor Saladino remarked how winning the Long Island Championship was an amazing accomplishment and a triumphant way to conclude a memorable season, and the success of this year’s team
speaks volumes about the school’s remarkable program and the support they receive from the dedicated coaching staff, school administrators, and parents. Capping a remarkable season in this
championship run, the Plainedge High School Football team, along with members of the coaching staff and administration, were presented with a commemorative sign to display at their school, as well as citations for the staff and parchment certificates
for every team member. Supervisor Saladino and members of the Town Board remarked that the Plainedge High School Long Island championship team is a great source of pride for our Town, and congratulated all of them on a job well done.

Department of Education’s ‘Faith in the Public Square’ Initiative Benefits Patients in Catholic Health Services Cancer Care Centers Wednesday, January 29th, Hicksville – As an outward expression of their faith, members of the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic school community coordinated a winter-themed service project to benefit patients in Catholic Health Services cancer care facilities. The project, done by faculty staff, students, Girl Scouts and parents completed and donated over 150 handmade blankets to a team from Catholic Health Services at a ceremony at the Department of Education’s Hicksville offices on Wednesday. The blankets will be used to help keep cancer patients warm and comfortable at various CHS facilities across Long Island. “We hope that the warmth of the blankets, and the prayers and warm wishes of these beautiful school communities brings comfort to all who are suffering.” Said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. On hand at the ceremony representing the schools were Kathy Moran, principal of Holy
Trinity High School with some students, and Maryalice Doherty, principal of Holy Family School along with some of her elementary students. Congratulations to Hicksville High School junior Maeryam Nasari, who won first place in the Nassau County Voice of Democracy audio essay contest, “What Makes America Great,” sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She also finished as the runnerup in the regional leg of the competition, which included submissions from several Long Island school
districts. Maeryam’s essay was first submitted to local VFW Post 3211 and was selected as the best among Hicksville High School entrants. Hicksville High School’s Jonas Edgarov and Alisha Shah won second and third place, respectively. In February, William M. Gouse Jr. of VFW Post 3211 will recognize these students, as well as
Hicksville Middle School’s Patriot Penn Essay winners, a contest also sponsored by the VFW. Dylan Seemangal, Hannah Lee and Barbara Maria Croce won first, second and third place, respectively. First-place winners from both contests will read their essays aloud to the gathered veterans and local politicians and community members present at the VFW meeting.

The 1st place winners of the competition, one instrumentalist and one vocalist from each of the Divisions, will win a cash award in the amount of $500 each and may be able to perform as a soloist with their MYO ensemble during the 2020-2021 season. There will also be cash awards for the 2nd ($200) and 3rd ($100) place winners, in each of the Instrumental and Vocal categories. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is committed to fostering a community of
talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an opportunity to rehearse and perform choral and orchestral masterworks at the highest possible level with recognized leaders in music education and performance. Founded in the fall of 1993 by John C. McNeur, MYO has grown from one orchestra of fifteen members to seven orchestras and nine choirs, serving almost 1,000 young musicians between the ages of 8 and 18.
