Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the
“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I
desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Distinguished Artists The Town of Oyster Bay 2015 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in February with a number of excellent performances scheduled at various libraries throughout the Town. This program, which is one of the Town’s most popular, runs through May 2015 and features performances by a variety of musical acts and dance programs. These concerts, all free of charge, display the diverse interests and talents of our residents here in the Town. Essay Earns Honor Dylan Gaznabbi, a student at Hicksville Middle School, placed second at the county level and first at the school level in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. Sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, this is the first time the Hicksville School
District has had a student place in the countywide competition. Patriot’s Pen is designed to encourage students from sixththrough eighth-grades to examine the nation’s history and express their own experiences in modern American society. Cindy Cheng and Alaha

Senior residents living in the Town of Oyster Bay who are looking for a ‘furever’ friend can look no further than the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter. According to Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, adoption fees are waived for senior citizens through the Town’s ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program. “Oftentimes people look to adopting a puppy or kitten when considering a new pet, however there are many advantages to taking home a ‘senior’ furry friend,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Generally speaking, senior canines and felines come already trained and ready for another chance at a good life.” The Councilman noted that under the Town’s ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program, the adoption fee and any cost associated
with spaying or neutering will be waived for a senior 62 and older who adopts a senior dog or cat. Seniors who adopt a dog would still have to pay the normal license fee. “Older pets have plenty to offer, not the least of which is love,” Councilman Macagnone commented. “Not only will you meet some great senior dogs or cats at our Town shelter, you may end up finding your new best friend.” The Councilman added that adult pets often require less supervision and less constant care than energetic puppies or kittens, making them great choices for older residents. Another consideration for those with grandchildren is that puppies and kittens sometimes exhibit playful nipping and clawing, which can frighten or potentially injure children, not to
mention that children can sometimes inadvertently be too rough with younger animals. “Adopting a mature pet who interacts well with children can be a great option,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “Typically, senior pets don’t have the same traits as their younger counterparts such as chewing, barking and jumping. Besides, adult animals can be every bit as cute and playful.” The Councilman added that the Animal Shelter, which is located at 150 Miller Place, Syosset, is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (516.677.5784). Arielle Gabalski, a 12th grade student at PlainviewOld Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School recently became a semifinalist of the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Arielle’s research, entitled “The Induction of Insight through the Priming of the Right
Superior Anterior Temporal Gyrus” seeks to determine whether priming of a specific part of the brain can improve a person’s problem solving ability. Arielle developed her research as part of the high school’s Advanced Placement Psychology Behavioral Research Program under the mentorship of her teacher Mr. Ray Tesar.
Only 300 students nationwide are announced as semifinalists of the Intel Science Talent Search each year. From this select pool, 40 finalists are then invited to Washington, DC in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for three top awards of $150,000 each.

The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The
association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this time-
tested tradition. Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by
the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people.
Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American
