The Distinguished Young Women of New York Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for its college scholarship program, open to current high school junior women in the state of New York who are graduating by June 2018. The state program will be held at Cohoes High School on Saturday, July 29th, 2017. As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,
some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,
“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Reading Rounds As part of a nearly monthlong program designed to promote the importance of reading, Hicksville’s Fork Lane Elementary School Principal Chris Scardino visited each classroom in
the school to read a book to students. Each day, Scardino sat before the class and engaged the students with thoughtful questions about the book he read to them. The program served as a
way to encourage reading as well as an opportunity for Scardino and the students to connect with each other in a fun and educational forum.
Commitment to Partnerships As part of an ongoing commitment to maintaining open lines of communication and fostering partnerships throughout the community, Hicksville Public School District Superintendent Dr. Carl Bonuso hosted a
Key Communicators roundtable meeting. The discussion featured representatives of the district, Hicksville business owners and community members, and served as a way to encourage forwardthinking dialogue. Topics discussed included school
district presence within the community, the Hicksville High School work-based learning program, and ways to expand school and business partnerships through particular projects and initiatives.

Night of A-Cappella
The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently celebrated students’ musical talents by hosting its annual “Night of A-Cappella” event at the Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. The event featured performances by eight student-run a-cappella groups in front of more than 1,000 friends, family, teachers and community
members. The groups that performed were: The Rolling Tones; Noteworthy; Under a Rest; B Sharps; Drastic Measures; On a High Note; Chock Full of Notes and an all-boys group, the Acafellas. The performances included original arrangements of popular songs spanning several decades, along with each group’s traditional alumni songs. Each group
chose their own songs and choreographed their performances. More than 100 studentmusicians participate in the a-cappella program. The event is part of the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s ongoing effort to give students the opportunity to express themselves in creative ways and use their imaginations to create something that makes them proud.

Following the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Kick Off Event that was held at Stony Brook University on Saturday, January 7th, the FIRST Long Island build season is officially underway. Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), the event hosted students, mentors and parents from 48 FIRST Long Island teams, who gathered in anticipation of learning the official rules for FIRST STEAMWORKSSM. Described by FIRST as a competition that “invites two adventurers’ clubs, in an era where steam power reigns, to prepare their airships
for a long-distance race,” FIRST STEAMWORKS is every part the ode to a time gone by. During the competition, two 3-team alliances will take to the playing field to complete a variety of tasks in an effort to score points and win the round and eventually advance to eliminations and finals. As with all FIRST Robotics Competitions, FIRST STEAMWORKS will begin with a 15-second autonomous period, during which robots may only operate on preprogrammed instructions to complete one of three tasks and/or cross the baseline. During the remaining two minutes and 15 seconds, students will control the team robots to build steam
pressure, start rotors and prepare for flight. Detailed instructions for each of these tasks are available in the official FIRST STEAMWORKS Overview and a visual description can be found in this animated video from FIRST. As the theme of this year’s game, FIRST STEAMWORKS will be in full-force during the 2017 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition scheduled to take place at Hofstra University on March 31st and April 1st.
