said, speaking before an audience of 450 graduates, their families, friends, faculty and college staff. “Think about what you want to be, and what you have to do to get there. And think about how to react when things don’t go necessarily as planned, and how to make the most of the adversity we all must face at some point in our lives.” In his remarks, Supervisor Lupinacci described the path that took him to his current post, leading a town of 210,00 residents: his decision to major in government in college and to pursue law and business graduate degrees; internships that reinforced

his career choice; election to the South Huntington school board and the state Assembly before deciding to run for Huntington supervisor last year after the longtime incumbent, Frank Petrone, announced his retirement. “I felt that all of my experiences...my education....my time as a government intern and staffer...my school board service...and my tenure on the state legislature... had prepared me for the job. I was excited about the prospect of giving back to a community that has given me so much,” the Supervisor said. He added, “I have been in office for three weeks now. Each day, I learn more about how this complex and diverse Town of 210,000 people functions. And I hope and believe I will continue to learn as long as I hold this job. The Town will only grow if I continue to grow. And I will grow by listening and learning.” He concluded: “As you leave this ceremony, diploma in hand, think about how much you have accomplished and smile. You are all off to an excellent start. Continue working hard, and you should get to where you want to be. But as you head down your chosen life path, I hope you enjoy the journey as much as the end result.”

Message of Compassion

Darryl Strawberry holds many titles: he’s an eight-time All Star, a four-time World Series Champion, and a twotime Silver Slugger. But, during today’s visit to Zucker Hillside Hospital, the stand-alone behavioral health facility of Northwell Health, he made it clear that his favorite title is addict in recovery. During his presentation, made to a gathering of substance abuse specialists, peer counselors and people struggling with addiction issues, Mr. Strawberry spoke in emotional details about his personal journey from addiction through recovery. Referencing his new book, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” Mr. Strawberry advised his audience

that no matter whether the addiction is alcohol, heroin or other opiates, or anything from food to sex, there is hope and possibility for anyone in search of a better life. “We have to step up as a society,” he said, “and I want to thank everyone at this hospital who works to make life better for those who need it. Recovery is possible, but we all have to help. The people who work here in this hospital – just know that this is not a job, it’s a calling. It’s about letting every person who walks through your door know that their lives matter.” Many times during his presentation, Mr. Strawberry emphasized the fact that addiction is a

disease that affects people from every neighborhood in this country and from every walk of life. “Addiction is a disease, and we have to tell people that there is nothing weak about a person getting addicted to drugs,” he said. “This is not a weakness. We have to remember that we don’t know a person’s story. All we can do is reach out a hand and ask, ‘How can I help?’” Speaking of the current opioid epidemic that is gripping this country, Mr. Strawberry encouraged parents of children with a temporary wound not to allow their children to be treated with addictive medication.”

Mardi Gras Dinner Dance The Marty Lyon’s Foundation – Long Island Chapter will host its 5th annual Marty Gras Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 17th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Captain Bill’s Restaurant; 122 Ocean Ave. in Bay Shore. Marty Lyons, a former NFL star for the New York Jets and a member of the legendary New York Sack Exchange, experienced three life-changing events that led him to establish a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to granting the wishes of seriously ill children. In 1982, with encouragement from family and friends, the Marty Lyons Foundation became a reality. It is unique among wishgranting organizations in that it provides a first wish and will consider a second wish for children who fall out of remission and are facing more battles with their illnesses. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information!

The Pilot Club is an organization that assists various support programs here on Long Island. They have donated medical equipment to those in need, given needy children backpacks filled with school supplies, spent time with special needs adults and more! Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Two-Time Winner Patrick Dircks, a seventhgrader at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District, is the winner of his school’s Geography Bee for the second consecutive year. Prior to the competition on January 10th, every social studies class held its own bee to determine the finalists from each grade for the schoolwide contest.

Officiated by Principal Kevin Fullerton, 33 finalists in grades 6-8 gathered in the auditorium to answer questions covering multiple facets of U.S. and world geography. Patrick will join students from across the country in taking an online written test as part of the next round of the 30th annual National Geographic Bee.

The top 100 scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state bee. The state winners will advance to the national championship rounds in Washington, D.C., where they will have the chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship. The district wishes Patrick much success as he continues in the competition.

If you haven’t tried this unique form of exercise, this Town program may just be the perfect opportunity to experience its many benefits.” Registration for the Pilates class will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage) on Saturday, February 3rd from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday, February 5th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, February 7th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The fee for the program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Town of Oyster Bay. Proof of residency is required and availability is limited. Town residents will be given first preference. If a session is cancelled due to inclement

weather, make up days will be attempted. “Healthy fitness programs like Pilates are very popular among residents because it gives them an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is always recommended that participants check with a physician before participating in any physical fitness program.” The class is designed for beginners and intermediates. Participants are asked to bring their own ½ inch to 1 inch thick mats, as Pilates equipment will not be provided. Bethpage High School senior and quarterback Jason Seiter received the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Nassau County Chapter Jay Fiedler Top Scholar-Athlete Award at the Crest Hollow Country Club on December 6th. He was also inducted into the NFF’s “Golden 11” team for Nassau County. Jason received this

recognition for his excellent academic standing and outstanding ability as a football player, and for demonstrating strong leadership and citizenship on and off the field. Alongside this prestigious award, Jason became a Golden 11 member for demonstrating a continued dedication to both academics and

athletics, maintaining Scholar-Athlete status and attaining All-County accolades. Golden 11 inductees are also good citizens in their school and respected members of the local community. Only one student-athlete from each school can be nominated, and selections are made by a committee of coaches from each conference. A three-sport athlete, Jason also plays basketball and lacrosse. He is a member of student civic, Athletes Helping Athletes, and the Spanish and National honor societies, and is enrolled in Advanced Placement and collegelevel courses. Rotational Arts Exhibit Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to enjoy the Town’s 44th annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. The program allows local artists to display their work in local libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis. “Through this program, local businesses around the Town get the opportunity to join in supporting local artists, while providing patrons with the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This program not only features the diverse works of new artists, but also some of the most accomplished artists from the area.” Supervisor Saladino said that Rotational Art Exhibit Program allows local businesses a unique opportunity to

position themselves at the intersection of industry and art. “This integration ultimately benefits both sectors and helps spread a passion for the arts,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I think we all benefit when the arts are more effectively incorporated into the everyday lives of our residents.” While the 2018 is schedule is set, the Town of Oyster Bay is already looking for new artists and businesses to participate in next year’s program. “In the Fall season, novice and experienced artists will have a chance to see their artwork approved and entered into ‘rotation’ where it will be displayed throughout the Town of Oyster Bay in 2019,” Supervisor Saladino said. Sean Bellia, Thomas McDonald and Jason Von Holten, eighth-grade students at Wantagh Middle School, were the proverbial $100,000 platinum winners of the business department’s Shark Tank Challenge for their project “JTS Prosthetics.” Their business would sell prosthetic limbs. Timmy Burke and Tommy Campisi were the second-place, $75,000 gold winners for their business “Chromium,” which would sell football equipment. Entrepreneur Hannah McCormick’s cosmetic company, “Light It Up,” was the third-place, $50,000 winner. Teacher Nancy O’Connor explained that

students enrolled in the eighth-grade business management course were required to participate in a final project called “My Business Idea!” The students worked as sole proprietors or formed a partnership, corporation or nonprofit organization with fellow classmates. The individual teams determined the business idea, name, logo and slogan, and startup costs and funding were researched. After defining their target market and competition, they created a website and completed a SWOT analysis to determine the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. During the January

22nd Entrepreneurial Challenge, called the Shark Tank Challenge, students delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing their companies to a panel of judges from local businesses. Included in their presentations were business cards, a grandopening event description and links to a charity organization. “The Shark Tank Challenge has brought innovation and enthusiasm to the business management class,” Ms. O’Connor said. “The students gained knowledge about the free enterprise system and learned they can own their own business if they are willing to work hard and passionately.”

Grievances may be filed with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission during the “grievance period,” occurring January 2nd, 2018 to March 1st, 2018. Receiver Stefanich stated, “Any taxpayer who feels an error has been made regarding their property assessment should take advantage of this opportunity to establish a correct and fair assessment value for their home. Any taxpayer who

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities,

develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide

AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition

to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. World Heritage International Student Exchange Program is seeking representatives to work with volunteer host families and international exchange students in your community. World Heritage provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. World Heritage representatives have the

opportunity to support American high school students through this transformative year abroad. Area representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, supervise the exchange students in their community throughout the year, and interview American students who wish to spend a semester, year or summer abroad.
