T
eachers Maria Falabella and Joanna Sieben have started an after-school Fitness Club at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District. Open to fourth- and fifth-graders as a 21st Century Scholars program, the club meets once a week for 12 weeks for each grade level. The pair started the club to keep students active while also involving them in after-school activities. Pictured are some of the students showing their skills.

Using steps to guide their audience, the authors wrote detailed steps on how to replicate their specific skill, including a list of items needed and the reasons the skill is important. Students put their thoughts together in a book format, complete with illustrations to guide the reader through each
step. After the books were bound, the first-grade classes came together in a special Author’s Celebration to share their creations. The event offered an opportunity for the authors to share their books and skills with their peers, and for their peers to perhaps learn some new skills.

On a recent Friday morning, the Village School gymnasium was filled with hip hop music, break dancing, and tons of energy courtesy of Hip Hop Fundamentals. Using dance to teach students about the principles of hip hop, including peace, love, unity, and having fun,
three super talented “B” Boys rocked the house. Students - and very brave teachers Ms. Tepper and Ms. Wolf - enthusiastically volunteered to learn several popular break dance moves. Throughout the powerful, character building assembly, students learned that
young people working together and supporting each other is the key to success. They also learned that dancing could be a positive tool for expressing anger and other emotions. Many thanks to Arts-inEducation Chairpersons Debra Ceglia and Evelyn O’Donnell for organizing this terrific event.

High School Concert
The Hicksville High School Winter Concert No. 1, featuring the school’s concert band and several orchestral groups, presented a cheerful holiday program that highlighted the advanced level of musical talent developing in the district. The concert band, directed by Chad Wyman, opened the program with James Swearingen’s arrangement of Karl King’s Coast Guards
March, followed by Richard Saucedo’s Asian Folk Rhapsody and a spirited rendition of Duke Ellington’s swing classic It Don’t Mean A Thing. The concert, string and symphony orchestras, all directed by Amy Noll, continued the program with an ambitious variety of pieces, including Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto No. 4 L’Inverno (Winter) featuring MiKyoung Kim on violin.
The concert finished strong with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, followed by Johann Strauss’s Radetzky March. The Hicksville High School Winter Concert No. 2 followed two nights later and featured Symphonic Band, directed by Chad Wyman, and the Mixed Choir and Girls Choir, both directed by Michelle Emeric.

Winning Essays Hicksville Middle School students Jeevan George, Rafeed Hossain and Lovepreet Kaur have been declared winners in the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot’s Pen essay contest. Kaur took first prize, after finishing second last year,
followed by George and Hossain. Twenty Hicksville Middle School students submitted essays for consideration. The VFW-sponsored competition required students to compose essays around a central theme;
this year’s was “What Patriotism Means to Me.” Meghan Dowling-Lewis is the proud social studies teacher of all three winning students. The students will be recognized at a special ceremony at the local VFW post later this year.
Wrapping Up Holiday Cheer Hicksville High School students and staff donated, collected and wrapped toys and other gifts for charitable distribution just in time for the prime days of the holiday season. Nearly 100 student volunteers gathered after school in the cafeteria
to work steadily for nearly two hours, sorting hundreds of toys and small gifts by age and gender appropriateness. Students worked in teams to wrap the items and label them with handwritten, cheerful holiday greetings. The sounds of scissors
cutting, paper folding, tape snapping and holiday giddiness filled the room until all gifts were wrapped and ready to go. The finished packages, after filling up two decorative collection boxes, required nearly four lunch tables for stacking.

Bethpage High School’s student civic talent show was held on January 16th. Benefiting Long Island Cares, attendees were charged an admission fee and/or can donation to help fill the pantry that supplies food to thousands of Long Islanders. Students Liz Backman and Deena Hadhound emceed the event, which included
acoustic performances, bands, instrumentals and disc jockeying from many of the school’s talented students. Winners of the 2014 talent show were: · First place – Samantha Ingenito singing Hallelujah · Second place – Michelle Vainer singing Clouds · Third place – Ryan Imbrononi DJ mixing
This year’s judges were DJ Rocky from WBAB radio; Jesse Kinch, a Long Island rock musician; Eileen Scanlon Christofi, a social justice advocate and freelance cosmetologist; and Brian O’Haire, a musician and songwriter known as “Billionaire Brian.”
Geo Bee faced off in a secondary geography challenge. The winner of the schoolwide bee was Alex Monoyos, a sixth-grader in Monica Klein’s social studies class. The runner-up was Sophia Suazo, a seventh-grader in Jody Smith’s social studies class who was also
a runner-up in last year’s bee. Alex will take a qualifying exam to determine whether he will move on to the state finals. Results are not expected until March. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in this event.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely
blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake
me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and flower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

Following outdoor winter safety tips will help avoid a trip to the emergency room. During the winter you should dress for the season: · Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers. Trapped air between the layers acts as an insulator. Layers can be removed to avoid perspiration and subsequent chill. · Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent and hooded. · Always wear a hat or cap

Heavy exertion, such as shoveling snow, clearing debris or pushing a car, increase the risk of a heart attack. To avoid problems, remember these tips: · Stay warm, dress warm and slow down when working outdoors. · Take frequent rests to avoid over exertion. · If you feel chest pain, stop and seek help immediately. Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can cause hypothermia, especially in children and the elderly. Watch for these symptoms: · Inability to concentrate · Poor coordination · Slurred speech · Drowsiness · Exhaustion · Uncontrollable shivering, followed by a sudden lack of shivering. If a person’s body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, get emergency medical assistance immediately. Remove wet clothing, wrap the victim in warm blankets and give warm, nonalcoholic, non-caffeinated liquids until help arrives. People working or playing outdoors during the winter can develop frostbite and not even know it. There is no pain associated with the early stages of frostbite, so learn to watch for these danger signs: · First, the skin may feel numb and become flushed. Then it turns white or grayish-yellow. Frostbitten skin feels cold to the touch. · If frostbite is suspected, move the victim to a warm area and cover the affected area with something warm and dry. Never rub it! · Get to a doctor or hospital as quickly as possible. Hicksville Middle School eighth-grade student Jonathan Kinnaman was the winner of the annual school Geography Bee held in early January. His knowledge of oceans, landmasses, maps, climates and natural resources propelled him to first place among 39
competitors from all grades at the school. Social studies teacher Kevin Kerley was the adviser for this local segment of the larger National Geography Bee. Jonathan will now go up against other top-ranked students from across the country in a written test
that may give him the opportunity to win $25,000 in a national competition sponsored by the National Geographic Society and hosted by Alex Trebek. There was a winner from each grade, with sixthgrader Teresa Moritz and seventh-grader Rebecca As Sloan receiving honors.

began in November during his trip to Arizona to play in the National Olympic Developmental Program Tournament and culminated with a regional tryout held at Penn State University in early January. A talented Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) student recently had the opportunity to play jazz music alongside three legendary guitarists: Frank Vignola, Vinny Raniolo and Bucky Pizzarelli. A senior at LIHSA from the Elwood UFSD, Brenden Malle has played with these local legends for the past two years, but this year, for the first time, he joined them for the annual First Night Morris County,
a high-profile New Year’s Eve community event held in Morristown, NJ. “We are so proud of Brenden for all his accomplishments, and for representing LIHSA in such a positive way,” said Dr. Francis G. Banta, Interim Principal at LIHSA. “The fact that this was his third time playing with these worldclass musicians is a true testament to his talent.” Frank Vignola, (attending 1980-1983) a
renowned guitar player who began his career at age five, and Vinny Raniolo, (class of 2002) an internationally-known guitarist, are both LIHSA alumni. “It always makes us proud to see alumni connecting with current students,” said Dr. Banta. “The LIHSA alumni community is very strong, and we are delighted that Brenden can enrich his music career with the help of his alma matter.”
The Interview Process
College interviews are a very daunting concept. So far, I have taken part in three of these alumni interviews. In my very limited experience with the process, it seems that the purpose is to sell the college to you. In addition to asking you questions, the interviewer will go into depth about his experience at the specific institution. He wants you to want to go there. He wants you to follow in his footsteps as an alumnus of College X. Alumni interviews are meant to serve as a judge of your communication competency. Essentially, it has become evident that an interviewer is checking that you can
handle yourself in the real world. No college wants introverts. They want passionate, articulate students. They sift through countless applications to find these lucky boys and girls. If you are really serious about attending a college, an interview is a great way to express your interest. It gives an applicant the chance to blow an interviewer away with an extensive knowledge of the history of the university, the campus or the academics. But even if you have no current interest in College X, it never hurts to keep your options open. Inherently, an interview is nerve wracking. You are being

judged by a stranger that has the power to influence the rest of your life. Who wouldn’t be nervous? When it comes down to it, the interviewer is there to make you feel at ease. There is no need to be anxious, as the interviewer will often lead the conversation and get you through the process. It is their job to ensure that the college has a steady influx of capable young minds. There is nothing you can do to guarantee admission, but an interview is a great place to start. The college is always looking for the best students an interviewer can provide. Both you and the interviewer are merely vessels for advancement.

(SBPLI) will present the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments on February 1st and 2nd at Central Islip Senior High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tournaments are

This year’s challenge is NATURE’S FURYSM, where children in elementary and middle school will research and present their own creative solutions to one of the largest international issues - natural disasters - which have affected
nearly three billion people globally. Children and their coaches will utilize robots to solve a set of natural disaster missions. Some will include positioning an evacuation sign, clearing an airplane’s runway of debris, and developing solutions that could be used in the future. The FLL Tournament is an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to
14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. Currently, there are 23,000 teams from 80 countries worldwide that participate in FLL tournaments.
