It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 14th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute.

Memorial and Tolerance Center, founded in 1992 by a group of Holocaust Survivors, elected officials, and interfaith clergy, will be honored at the awards gala held in March by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. The Nassau County Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center annually reaches tens of thousands of individuals across Long Island and from metro-New York with its message of tolerance. It offers seminars on a wide variety of topics that explore the connections between intolerance and bullying in all its forms. The HMTC provides a number of Holocaust education programs - from fourth-grade through the college level - designed to illuminate, inform and educate people about the events that led to the genocides that occurred during World War II. The Center uses that tragic history as a platform to discuss the destructive power of institutionalized hatred in the ongoing genocides of today’s world. The HMTC’s educational programs are aligned with the New York State standards and common core values. The Center expands its

A second-grade student and a kindergarten student at South Grove Elementary School, in the Syosset School District, will see their designs in print after recently winning the “Katie Woo Super Stylish Contest.” The competition, sponsored by the Katie Woo series publisher, Capstone Publishing, encouraged children to

use their imagination to create a unique outfit for the Katie Woo character, who celebrates her fifth anniversary this year. The two students, Kate Lin (grade 2) and Erika Ahn (kindergarten), submitted their designs to South Grove’s Library Media Specialist Denise Bento, who entered them into the contest. Ahn won first place for “Best Pant/Skirt,” with her multi-tiered ruffle skirt in a rainbow of colors. Lin won for “Best Outfit.” In its announcement, Capstone stated of Lin’s design: “A real show stopper. Kate designed a spectacularly bold, floral pink kimono.” Katie Woo author Fran Manushkin and illustrator Tammie Lyon helped judge the contest. For their winnings,

What’s The Plan? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit. So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating. I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be

spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own. From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance. Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)

to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps. They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed. I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow. Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto and the Town Board are once again welcoming the LI Blues, as well as three other hockey teams, to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage for the 5th Annual LI Blues Winter Classic. This special event showcases hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love. The public is welcome to attend and admission is FREE. Faceoff for the first of four games is at 3:30 p.m. The fourth and final game is expected to conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located at 1001 Stewart Avenue, adjacent to Bethpage Community Park. “The LI Blues is an inspiring hockey program in which children and young adults with developmental disabilities play ice hockey in an accommodating setting,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It is a terrific program that brings all the fun of playing ice hockey to

athletes with special needs. Three other teams, the East Coast Jumbos, the New Jersey Avalanche and the Southern Connecticut Storm will be participating and the Town Board and I welcome these teams to the Town of Oyster Bay. We also invite our residents to come to this event and cheer these players on. Their commitment and dedication to the sport is very uplifting.” “The LI Blues organization is pleased to again be partnering with the Town of Oyster Bay to present the LI Blues Winter Classic,” Michael Russo of LI Blues Special Hockey said. “We are very proud of our program which adapts the game of hockey to make it fun for players with special needs. The LI Blues Winter Classic is an outstanding piece of that program and we are thrilled to have it at the state-of-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center.” Supervisor Venditto noted that the LI Blues Winter Classic is just one

of the many special events held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. The Supervisor said, “This fabulous facility is the home to many hockey and skating organizations, including the LI Blues. Throughout the year, there are championship high school hockey games, special programs such as the New York Rangers Try Hockey for Free and the Town’s Annual Holiday on Ice Show. In addition there is the Town’s highly acclaimed youth hockey program and other special events. Glass Half Full During a special character education program, more than 90 girls at Hicksville High School in the Hicksville School District learned about the importance of maintaining their healthy self-esteems and continuing their optimism.

The school’s physical education department arranged for the Hance Family Foundation to visit and conduct its Beautiful Me self-esteem program, which is comprised of volunteers engaging in group conversations and workshop activities

promoting appreciation for what makes each girl special. The Hance Family Foundation was founded to honor sisters Emma, Alyson and Katie Hance, and the program was held at no cost to the district.

Anti-Bullying Lesson Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) School District’s Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School recently welcomed the Harlem Globetrotters to teach fifth and sixth grade students ways to reduce bullying. The Globetrotters coordinated with the

National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV) to discuss Action, Bravery, Compassion and the tools students can use to support one another during their “The ABC’s of Bullying” program. Students learned what it means to be part of a team while enjoying the

Globetrotters signature ball handling skills and humor. The visiting member of the Harlem Globetrotter team serves as a positive role model for the students, who learn valuable lessons in character, empathy and making a difference.

Students at PlainviewOld Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School recently learned the basics of playwriting from awardwinning writer and theater educator Daniel Judah Sklar. Students and English teachers participated in workshops that emphasized the purpose of creating

fictional characters for playwriting. and AP physics at the Collegiate School. While there, Dr, Lewis sponsored a finalist in the prestigious Westinghouse Science Competition. Following her tenure at the Collegiate School, she went on to serve as science chair for the Rockville Centre UFSD, science director for the Uniondale UFSD, director of curriculum and assessment and deputy superintendent in the Three Village CSD, and adjunct professor with Hofstra University. Prior to assuming her current position with the Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD, Dr. Lewis served as superintendent of the East Williston UFSD. Under her leadership, that district’s high school was consistently recognized as one of the top 100 high schools in the country by Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Lewis is a member of numerous major educational organizations. She co-chairs the curriculum committee of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, serves on the Commissioner’s Advisory Committee for the Task Force for APPR, is president-elect for the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, serves on the Long Island STEM Hub Board of Champions and the SCOPE Board of Directors, and is an active past-president with the Long Island Association for supervision and curriculum development. She is also a valued advisor

to the New York State Education Department and the New York State Board of Regents. An expert on education, Dr. Lewis has testified before the New York State Senate on the impact of testing, speaking as the voice of the New York State Council of School Superintendents. She also presented a white paper about proposed graduation rates to the Commissioner and the state Board of Regents, on behalf of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents. An award-winning educator, Dr. Lewis has been named Educator of the Year by the Korean Parents Association of Long Island, the St. John’s University Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, and the Long Island Black Educators. Terrence Clark, Superintendent of the Bethpage UFSD, is being lauded as one of the most devoted supporters of public education on Long Island. Mr. Clark is among 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner award, bestowed annually on those individuals and organizations whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. Terrence Clark, an educator in Bethpage for nearly 30 years, will be honored at the awards gala held in March by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. Mr. Clark began his career in the Bethpage

school district as a social studies teacher, when he first became an active advocate of schoolcommunity engagement. As a student advisor, he helped to create one of the first Senior Citizens’ Proms in Nassau County, now a staple event in Bethpage. It is, however, through his extraordinary insight and understanding of technology that he truly excels as a leader. Upon filling the newlycreated role of Director of Technology in 2001, Mr. Clark promptly launched a state-of-the-art technology program in Bethpage, which soon became the model for districts throughout Long Island. On the heels of this success, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Technology. It was in this capacity that Mr. Clark began the 21st Century Scholars’ Program at the high school. The program, aimed at developing well-rounded students, maintains an electronic portfolio of after school activities for each student. Topics cover a wide range of academic areas, from arts and literature to business and technology, and include engaging activities, such as online courses, book discussions, seminars conducted by teachers and alumni, and field trips to museums, operas and plays. The program has been so successful it’s been expanded to include the

elementary and middle school levels. Mr. Clark took the helm of Bethpage Schools in 2009. Under his leadership, the district has made monumental achievements. In 2013, Kramer Lane Elementary School was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School and designated an Exemplary High-Performing School. Newsweek recently named Bethpage High School one of America’s top high schools. And Bethpage students ranked in the top 15 of Nassau County on all 12 New York State assessments, with thirdand forth-graders snagging the top two spots in English language arts. “The success of Bethpage can be directly attributed to Superintendent Terrence Clark,” wrote his award nominator. “He has an exceptional rapport with students, teachers, administrators and staff, and has led the district to a new level of individualized instruction. Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $10,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) Student Assistance Program. Funding for the program will help to support the ongoing operation

Jill Arden Rooney, Founder and Executive Director of Harbor Child Care, is being lauded as one of the most devoted supporters of public education on Long Island. Ms. Rooney is among 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner award, bestowed annually on those individuals and organizations whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding

individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. Jill Rooney, an active advocate for childcare on Long Island for more than 40 years, will be honored at the awards gala held in March by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. For more than 40 years, Jill Rooney has been a tireless champion of children’s causes and has worked to provide highquality childcare and education, in a safe and healthy environment that

promotes wellbeing. In 1973, she founded Harbor Child Care in response to the growing trend of mothers entering the workforce. Harbor was one of the first childcare centers on Long Island to be accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. Today, Harbor Child Care has flourished into a comprehensive nonprofit agency with seven centers throughout Nassau County serving nearly 1,000 children and their families. The center uses a rigorous, research-based curriculum known as the High Scope Cognitive Development Program. Ms. Rooney is a national trainer in High Scope, with a focus on preschool education. Beyond Harbor Child Care, Ms. Rooney has been influential in a number of causes influencing

Advocate Honored children’s welfare. She founded the Teaching Institute for Infant Care Givers, the first program to provide ongoing training for teacher-caregivers of children age 0-3. More than 400 childcare providers have been trained in this program, which was the first on Long Island to offer training and certification in infant childcare. Ms. Rooney spearheaded the first countywide conference on infectious diseases in childcare settings and helped to launch the Nassau County Coalition for Child Care to increase public awareness of the need for quality community childcare. She assisted in organizing the 23-agency Task Force Against Childhood Violence and created the ongoing “Where Are the Children” campaign to track and retrieve children

in underground or illegal childcare facilities. In recent years, she organized The Coalition of Health and Wellness in the Early Years to address healthcare issues in early childhood. Ms. Rooney has been recognized as a “Woman of Distinction” by the March of Dimes, named a New York State “Woman of the Year” by Senator Michael Balboni and has been dubbed one of Newsday’s “Everyday Heroes.” She earned the Children of Destiny Award at the BridgeStones International First Annual Gala for “restoring value and hope to the lives of children” and was named the Margo O’Connor Child Advocate of the Year by the Child Care Council of Nassau County. Ms. Rooney was selected three separate times by Long Island Business News as one of

the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business, and as a result has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. “Jill Arden Rooney is a respected leader in the childcare field and a driving force in children’s advocacy,” wrote her award nominator. “She stands for children first, last and always.
