Due to the overwhelming demand from the community, the Manhasset SEPTA Special Needs Yoga program returns this winter for another four week session. This free, unique yoga program is designed especially for children ages 5 to12 years old and older with learning, physical, or developmental challenges. Two four-week sessions of the special needs yoga classes are to be held on Friday afternoons starting in February 26th. The program is presented by Manhasset SEPTA and is funded by a generous grant from the North Shore Autism Circle. “We are so grateful for the NSAC’s support and bringing this program back

for a second session this year,” Manhasset SEPTA President Blanca McKenna states. Held in the Manhasset Public Library’s Garden Room on the third floor, the program offers 45-minute classes starting at 4:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. for 5-8 year olds, and a second class at 5:00 p.m. for 9-12 year olds and older. The program runs from Friday, February 26th to March 18th. Each class emphasizes breathing and relaxing techniques with stretching and fun yoga poses, all set to soothing music to help kids understand and experience inner focus and body awareness. The classes are taught by Lisa

Cusano, certified yoga instructor with experience in teaching special needs children. The program helps children increase concentration, focus, body flexibility, strength, balance and coordination, and through yoga games, guided imagery, and controlled breathing, participants learn relaxation and how to reduce stress themselves. Manhasset SEPTA, a local chapter of the National PTA focusing on the special education community, is eager to offer the benefits of yoga to the special needs children in the North Shore area. Kennedy High School students, teachers and faculty members recently organized and participated in the school’s third annual student-staff memorial basketball event in honor of Michael Secko, Swoosh for Secko. As part of the students’ No One Fights Alone campaign, the game was one of the many events aimed to spread cancer research awareness and preserve the memory of Mr. Secko, a JFK High School business teacher who passed away during the 2012-2013 school year. “Michael Secko was a superb educator, going above and beyond his teaching responsibilities and serving as a role model and advisor to all

Plainview students,” said Superintendent Dr. Lorna Lewis. “The tradition of honoring his memory each year by our students is a reflection on his devotion to his students and the positive values of our students.” Mr. Secko’s students, colleagues and friends honored his memory before the game with a moment of silence. The basketball tournament is one of the multiple fundraisers that occurred throughout an awareness week as part of the DECA students’ No One Fights Alone campaign. The students conducted bake sales, awareness bracelet sales at Back to School Night and Parent Teacher Conferences. Students sold purple “No

Spanish Immersion Manhasset SEPTA’S Gifted & Talented Program is offering children in first to third grades a new language experience program. The Spanish Immersion Workshop is held on Wednesdays, and running on February 3rd, 10th, 24th and March 2nd in the Manhasset Public Library – Garden Room (3rd Fl) at 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The program is free to attend, but registration is required. “Spanish Immersion Workshop, Long Island’s leading Spanish program for children, along with Manhasset SEPTA’s Gifted

In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered. Valuable Lesson Before heading back to their respective colleges for the second semester, 41 Syosset High School alumni returned to the high school to talk with current students about their postsecondary education experiences. Coordinated by the high school guidance department and Syosset High School PTSA, Alumni Day brought current juniors and seniors together with former students to discuss a wide range of issues. Topics included making adjustments in study habits and budgeting work time, getting along with roommates, overcoming homesickness and major

commonalities among the student bodies of the different universities. Max Carol, Syosset’s 2015 valedictorian who now attends Cornell University, participated in a panel discussion with upperclassmen in the Little Theater. “The biggest thing is transitioning to living in a new place on your own and paying for things yourself,” he said. “Academically, it’s hard too. Syosset High School prepared me well with all of the different kinds of classes and AP courses that it offers. It definitely helped in adjusting to the larger [college] workload.” Panel discussions were

also held in the school library and guidance resource center. Alumni were treated to a breakfast in the guidance center prior to breaking out into discussion groups. The Syosset High School PTSA and Syosset High School Parent Connection coordinate Alumni Day annually, conjunction with the guidance department. They also publish an extensive campus connection booklet that includes the names, phone numbers and email addresses of approximately 150 participating alumni, along with the colleges/ universities they attend. The booklet is available to current Syosset students.

SBA Deadline The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for economic injury caused by the apartment building fire on April 10th. The deadline to apply for a working capital disaster loan is February 19th. “Businesses that suffered economic losses as a result of the disaster and want to apply for low-interest loans from the SBA are urged to do so before the February 19th deadline,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East. Low-interest disaster

loans are available in the counties of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Washington in New York; Berkshire in Massachusetts and Bennington in Vermont. Working capital disaster loans up to $2 million are available at 4 percent for small businesses, and 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations with terms up to 30 years. The loans are intended to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other expenses that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. To be considered for this assistance, eligible entities need to apply by the deadline. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via

SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba. gov/ela. The competition winners, one instrumentalist and one

vocalist, will win a cash award in the amount of $500 each. There will also be cash awards for the 2nd ($200) and 3rd ($100) place winners, in both the instrumental and vocal categories. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is committed to fostering a community of talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an opportunity to rehearse and perform orchestral and choral masterworks at the highest possible level with recognized leaders in music education and performance. Founded in the fall of 1993 by John C. McNeur, MYO has grown from one orchestra of fifteen members to seven orchestras, a flute choir, and seven choral ensembles, serving over 990 young musicians between the ages of 8 and 18.
