Hockey Tournament Slated For January 25th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the 10th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic will take place on Saturday, January 25th. This special event showcases LI Blues hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love verse three other teams
from the tri-state area. The public is welcome to attend and admission is FREE. The tournament will consist of six games that will take place throughout the day between the four teams. “The LI Blues is an inspiring hockey program in which children and young adults with developmental disabilities play ice hockey

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. Congratulations to Hicksville High School senior Sejal Gupta who has been named a Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar for 2020! Sejal has been selected from among 300 national Regeneron Scholars now eligible for a grand prize of $250,000 and a chance to be named the top Regeneron Scholar. Sejal was selected for her project, “Development of a Machine Learning Algorithm to Predict the Path of Joints for Gait Rehabilitation.” She set out to develop a machinelearning algorithm that can predict personalized walking patterns for patients with injuries to lower extremities. In order to achieve the most effective plan for each patient’s injury, Sejal determined that age, mass, leg length and gait speed must all be factored

Long Island Community Hospital has recently been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. To receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. The program must also have procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs. “Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.” states Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard T. Margulis. “Screening with low-dose computed tomography scans, in tandem with appropriate follow-up care, can significantly reduce
lung cancer deaths in our community.” Screenings are recommended for adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. In addition to the ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center Designation, Long Island Community Hospital also received notification that our Women’s Imaging Center’s Ultrasound unit passed its ACR accreditation renewal. requires that each piece of imaging equipment pass rigorous quality assurance requirements every 3 years. They must also meet stringent FDA Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requirements for imaging quality. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services will be offering free musical performances during the month of January 2020 at local libraries throughout the Town to continue the 20192020 Distinguished Artists Concert Series, which will continue to run monthly through May 2020. “The Town’s Distinguished Artists Concert Series has proven to be one
of our most popular and enduring programs, as residents flock from all across the Town to see the free musical and dance performances scheduled each month for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I invite residents to take advantage of these four wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries throughout the month of January.” Upcoming performance for January 2020: • The History of Rock & Roll – A Trip Down
that registration for the Town’s 2020 Spring Youth Ice Hockey Program and House League is underway now through January 26th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, with on-site registration available on Sunday, January 26th (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). The Ice Skating Center is located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “Youngsters enrolled in the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program are given the great opportunity to improve their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is among the best around,
and girls enrolled in our program.” The program is open to girls and boys ages 3-16. Individuals interested in registering for the 2020 Spring Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Check, money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. The program is held on Sunday mornings, and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Registration fees are as follows: * 6U: $225 for one child being registered, $175
* 8U, 10U, 12U, & 16U: $350 for one child being registered, $300 for each additional child from same family ($450 for non-residents) All participants must provide their own equipment, and should have some skating ability. Games will be played at all three Town rinks, with game schedules being distributed in February. Outside of school, she is involved in an Innovation Entrepreneurship Café in which she teaches students in grades kindergarten through eight in STEAM. Sejal hopes to be among the 40 finalists who will be announced on Jan. 22. Finalists are invited
to Washington, D.C., in March to participate in final judging. While in the nation’s capital, finalists will display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists and compete for awards, including the top award of $250,000. Sejal said she will also enter her project into the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. The Regeneron Science Talent Search is the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Its alumni have made extraordinary contributions to science and hold more than 100 of the world’s most coveted science and math honors, including the Nobel Prize and the National Medal of Science. Each Regeneron

How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island? On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new

Students Compete In Natgeo Geobee Students at JFK Middle School in the Bethpage Union Free School District competed in the National Geographic GeoBee on Jan. 7. Sixth grader Chris Jenal took first place, with Zoe Chinda, grade 8, placing second and Lucas Ferri, grade 7, finishing third. The GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students’
curiosity about the world. Questions cover geography, ancient and world civilizations, and cultures. More than 120 million students have learned about the world through participation in the GeoBee since its inception in 1989. JFK’s school competition is the first of three rounds. As the winner, Chris received a medal and a special
certificate. He will take a proctored online qualifying test in attempt to qualify for the New York State GeoBee competition, which will take place in March. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid. 4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made in connection with said bid shall be forfeited.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announces that a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program will be offered during the months of February and March. This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room and Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration is now, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development
through nurturing their artistic expression,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Classes fill up quickly on a first-come, first-serve basis, so register today!” The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 6 weeks in duration, beginning February 11th, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Tuesdays at 10am (two year olds only); Tuesdays at 11am (three and four year olds); Wednesdays at 10am (two year olds only); Wednesdays at 11am or 1:30pm (three and four year olds); Thursdays at 10am (two year olds only); and Thursday at 11am (three and four year olds).
Each class is approximately 30 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. The Toddler’s Arts & Crafts Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division. Central Boulevard Students Construct Owl Nests
Third grade students from Central Boulevard School in the Bethpage School District recently learned about owl conservation during a special visit from environmental staff at Bethpage State Park. Melissa Sokolowski and Kate Wright’s third grade classes visited the Bethpage Green Course earlier this fall as part of First Green, a Golf Course Superintendents Association of America STEM education program.
Taught by Director of Agronomy Andrew Wilson and Park Ecologist Yael Weiss, students learned how the golf course provides an important habitat for plants, mammals, amphibians and birds. As a follow-up to the visit, Weiss organized a second event for the students in Central Boulevard’s STEM lab. This time accompanied by naturalist Jim Jones, they discussed types of owls and how to encourage great horned
owl nesting on Long Island. After the lesson, students constructed nests for this species from vines and evergreen needles. The nests will be placed in specific trees on the Bethpage Golf Course to encourage mating pairs to stay and raise their young in the protected space. If owls take up residency in the nests, students will receive photos of the parents, eggs and eventually young owlets.

20th Anniversary Of Performing At St. Patrick’s Cathedral The Syosset High School Chamber Singers, under the direction of Kristin Howell, performed for a crowd of visitors at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on Friday, December 13th. It was the 20th anniversary of Syosset students performing at the historic cathedral. The students were selected to perform as part of the Guest Choir Concert Series, which features top-level high school, college, church, cathedral and professional choirs from around the world. The Syosset Chamber Singers have been invited to perform for the
past 20 years, making the performance an annual tradition. Reflected 12th grade student Dani Cherkis, “When we got to the cathedral, I was in awe of how beautiful the space truly was. I immediately was filled with joy and excitement. The way our voices bounced back to us after every break was so cool, it truly was something I had never experienced before.” Prior to the performance in Manhattan, the Chamber Singers visited St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bethpage to spread holiday cheer by caroling for patients and staff.
“Starting the day at St. Josephs was so amazing,” remarked 11th grade student Alexandra Donach. “It was so apparent that the patients were suffering, but seeing how they and the nurses smiled, and even cried because of how moving our songs were was so inspiring, and gave so much reason to why we do what we do.” “I believe these experiences to be the most memorable for our students,” commented Howell. “Giving the gift of music is like no other. “
