On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC). The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bicounty effort to help Long Islanders improve their health. A key component of LIHC’s work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well. Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event. NSHC is
the agency that represents Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted that this groundbreaking endeavor is exactly what the state health department is calling for in its effort to promote population health and integrated, coordinated health care services throughout New York’s local communities. Health commissioners for both Nassau and Suffolk counties - Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken respectively – echoed Dr. Zucker’s comments. They agreed that the prevalence of chronic disease is widespread in both counties and a bi-county initiative like LIHC will help raise awareness and connect Long Islanders to the appropriate care and services.

The Bond Of Brotherly Lover I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong. My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration. For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family. My little brother is the reason why I strive for
greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness. My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine. There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in
us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed. I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our
preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only
rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a result, LIHC’s efforts will focus on these priorities. LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well. Health care providers - hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types work together to provide coordinated health care. A bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and built-environment policy changes at the local level.

KIT OF PARTS - Bethpage High School students attended this year’s kickoff event for the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. Hosted by Stony Brook University, they gathered with more than 40 participating high schools on Saturday, January 4th, at Stony Brook University’s Jacob Javits Lecture Center for a presentation and simulcast broadcast from New Hampshire. After the presentation, each team received a kit of parts, which they will use along with other materials, to build a 120-pound robot. The teams will have six weeks to construct the robot and prepare for the upcoming competition to be held on March 27th-29th at Hofstra University.

The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is comprised of all Long Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments, dozens of communitybased organizations, and academic institutions. These partners joined together in early 2013 to combine their expertise in a streamlined and cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. The website is a component of their work. The userfriendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well. The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties are partnering in such a comprehensive way. Public health and public affairs experts from the region’s hospitals, as well as health
department leaders and representatives from social service organizations and public health specialists from colleges, comprise the collaborative. “Health care is a reactive industry . . . we respond to patients’ needs when they are sick and injured,” said Kevin Dahill, president/ CEO of the NSHC. “What is invigorating about this effort is that it is proactive.” The group initially formed in February 2013 in response to enhanced state and federal government regulations that require all health care providers, local health departments, and community-based service organizations to work together to assure and improve health in communities they serve. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities. More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, communitybased organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities.

Partnerships Make Catholic Education Work Virtually every Catholic elementary school student goes on to one of Long Island’s elite Catholic high Schools upon graduation, and 99% of those students go on to college. So it should be no surprise that preparing students to excel in that atmosphere is an academic, spiritual and social goal beginning in the elementary schools. That degree of awareness, integration
and cooperation is not an accident, however. Did you know that there is an active program to create a Catholic education network from Nursery through higher education? Its goal is to provide students and families with a greater return on their investment in choosing Catholic schools, and its effect is to provide a continuum of Catholic education.

strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education. The relationship with St John’s also helps with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators), St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on Math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program, CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams), involves meetings at the university and onsite at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices. The Diocese has also worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future Administrators. Teachers in the Diocese who have been chosen to participate in this program receive
a Masters degree in Administration. The commitment to excellence displayed by participants in this program assures that the Diocese will have future leaders with the required competencies to lead as visionaries and manage operations successfully. Molloy College and the Diocese have created a series of workshops to improve instructional delivery to meet the needs of diverse learners. The Molloy faculty has been working closely with schools in the Diocese on response to intervention, the use of educational technology, and the implementation of best practices. One of the most interesting aspects of the work with Molloy has been the pilot program to integrate iPads into the special education program at St. Agnes Cathedral School in Garden City. Together, from the formation of values
in elementary school, to the development of character in high school, to the polishing of skills in these great colleges and universities, Catholic children get an advantage for life, and their families get a solid return on their investment.
Students Of The Quarter Julianne Hughes and Nick Hydo from the Bethpage School District were named Student of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES’ Barry Tech. They were honored for their first quarter grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness. Students of the Quarter also have taken the initiative on class projects and are role models for all students both at school and during internship assignments.

Hand-Stitched Hamlet The Town of Oyster Bay has partnered with the Oyster Bay Main Street Association, the Oyster Bay East Norwich Chamber of Commerce and local business, The Knitted Pearl, to transform Oyster Bay’s downtown business district into the “Hand-Stitched Hamlet,” Town Councilman Chris Coschignano announced. With help from worldrenowned artist Carol Hummel, trees and light poles along Audrey Avenue, East Main Street and South Street will be decorated with colorful fiber art. “The Town of Oyster Bay has long been a staunch supporter of local businesses, which are so essential to our communities,” Councilman Coschignano said. “The Town is happy to support this endeavor which will not only enhance the appeal of the neighborhood, but also give the historic area a look that is even more unique. This project will entice people to come and visit the historic downtown

Competition Kickoff More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 4th for a local kickoff of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2014 robotics game called “Aerial AssistSM.” “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors ,volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance

Zimpher today announced that Stony Brook University will play a leadership role in the system’s introduction of Open SUNY, offering one of the first degree programs to be powered by this signature initiative. Stony Brook’s Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering online degree will now be offered to students with a comprehensive suite of supports and services to aid in degree completion. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher introduced the new “Open SUNY+” degree programs during her annual State of the University Address today in Albany. “Open SUNY will provide our students with the nation’s leading online learning experience, drawing on the power of SUNY to expand access, improve completion, and prepare more students for success,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “In addition to these new, fully-online degree programs, Open SUNY will take every online course we offer at every SUNY campus - now upwards of 12,000 course selections conducted by 7,000 faculty - and make them easy to find and accessible for every SUNY student and prospective leaners around the globe.” “We are proud of our collaboration and success in serving a qualified student population that may not

By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods. “These beautiful trees
will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.” The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. The trees will be
shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1st and May 31st, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch tall trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Members will also receive a subscription to the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which includes information about
