The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Spelling ace Sejal Gupta, a seventh-grader at Hicksville Middle School in the Hicksville School District, outlasted 10 other students in her school’s spelling bee to qualify for the regionals at Hofstra University. The competition, which

lasted 29 rounds and set a new record for the longest-running spelling bee ever at HMS, featured an exciting back-andforth between Gupta and runner-up Viveka Jain, also a seventh-grader. If Gupta, who was runner-up last year as a

sixth-grader, can outlast winners from other Nassau and Suffolk schools at Hofstra next month, she will go on to represent Long Island in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the spring.

Registration Underway Registration for individuals interested in working as a lifeguard for the 2015 summer season is currently underway. The Town of Oyster Bay is now hiring lifeguards at our pools and at North Shore beaches for the upcoming season, which extends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. As there is of course a lot of work and responsibility that comes with being a

lifeguard, the position is meant for those who are experienced swimmers and up for the challenge of protecting residential swimmers and beach attendees. Anyone interested in becoming a lifeguard must pass a 30-hour American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course administered by the Town Department of Parks that will certify the applicants

Students worked on such activities as drag and drop programming, writing of code, application development and website design. “Technology has quickly become an important part of our everyday lives and an omnipresent component of today’s job market,” said Superintendent Dr. Lorna Lewis. “In order to help prepare our students for the future and encourage a creative and problemsolving mindset, we must begin to integrate computer science

lessons into our everyday curriculum.” The “Hour of Code” was also an opportunity to involve elementary age students in computer programming lessons. Research shows that younger children can grasp programming concepts before they know how to read and write. Their brains are more receptive to computer languages at a young age, similar to foreign languages. All students involved were challenged to think creatively and were exposed to possible career paths.

Competition celebrates the extraordinary talents and inspiring performances in vocal, instrumental music, dance, magic, drama and comedy. This annual Talent Competition highlights everything the Arts Council stands for, the promotion of stimulating, performing, and visual arts within our local communities throughout the Town. The deadline for application for this year’s competition is Tuesday, February 17th.

Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s Stratford Road Elementary School students recently created instruments out of various household items to perform current events set to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy, representing broadsides - how New Yorkers historically received their news. During the student’s

second Symphony Space event, students performed their home-made instruments for visiting artist Linda Russel, a balladeer for the National Park Service at Federal Hall National Memorial in New York City. The Symphony Space program encourages students to explore art and music as it applies to New

York State (NYS) history through student trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Symphony Space Theatre, and multiple in-school artist visits. Visiting artist Linda Russel has performed at such esteemed venues as A Prairie Home Companion, Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Symphony Space and the National Archives.

were innocent victims in the horrible December 20th attack in Brooklyn. The “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” supports first responders, including Police Officers, and honors the sacrifice these men and women make daily. With the unexpected snow setting the mood, the morning began with the respectful reading of the names of Police Officers that are family members of the students and staff of Holy Family School. The student’s then listened as our Commissioner of Religious Affairs read the Policeman’s prayer to Saint Michael, everyone then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and

sang God Bless America. As far as the profit, there was no set donation amount. Students, faculty, staff, and families sent in the amount they wished to donate. The amount almost tripled our usual dree down day profit! In addition to donating money, every member of the Holy Family School Family promised to keep ALL Police Officers and their loved ones in their prayers. Students from Nursery through grade eight said they were proud to be wearing BLUE as a sign of respect and gratitude for ALL Police Officers!

With a strong desire to show our respect and support for the NYPD, and all Police Officers on Long Island, in New York State, and across our country, Friday, January 9th, was Holy Family School’s “Day of Honor” for the men and women “in blue.” Instead of the usual navy, grey, and plaid uniforms, students at Holy Family School donated money to wear blue dress down clothes and Police attire to school. All proceeds raised from this Dress Down Day was donated to the “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” for the families of the two brave, dedicated, and beloved NYPD officers that

In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the

students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors, volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 26th28th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by SBPLI, which has also sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past

sixteen years. “This proves to be an exciting time for the students and the mentors when they learn the name and the rules of the game for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Deb Winter, FRC Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “We were very proud to present the FRC kickoff as we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Regional FRC in March.” During the 2015 season, 50 teams from Long Island, New York City, and the surrounding areas; Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Israel; and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional

and in the hallway leading to the Catheterization Labs. The newly “Splashed” suite at Good Samaritan Hospital will bring smiles to the faces of patients, staff and visitors.

FRC on March 26th-28th, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 22nd-25th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. “The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Winter. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.” For more information, visit http://www.sbpli.org.
