yosset High School students Alexandra Chan, Daniel Hirsch, Rachel Kang, Joshua Katz and Benjamin Senzer have been named national semifinalists in the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Three customer service calls. Five “live” online chats. No fewer than four individual “incident” numbers to reference. And still, nearly six weeks later, no resolution. Allow me to back up and fill in the blanks. A few days after Black Friday, I decided to use a credit obtained through a retailer-whoshall-not-be-named, coupled with several other coupons and promotions, to purchase a pair of sneakers (and socks) online. No problem. Order processed, confirmed, waiting for shipment. Over a week later, an e-mail stating that a portion of my order (aforementioned sneakers) had been cancelled, as they were suddenly “out of stock.” The socks, however, arrived all by their lonesome several days later. Annoying? Sure. But, more to the point, what became of my credit which, thanks to the delay in processing, was now expired, having not been applied to my

now-cancelled purchase? One would assume I would be entitled to some sort of refund/coupon/ gift card in order to make future use of this sum, now $2.99 less thanks to the socks. One would also think that a store’s customer service representatives would be well versed in how to handle such a scenario, seeing as I couldn’t have been the first person to ever encounter such a cancelled order/ credit issue. And yet, here we are, approaching the close of January, and still no sign of that “customer is always right” mantra. No, all I’ve gotten is the runaround, everything from “your gift card is in the mail” to “we can only apply the credit to a future online order, but the time frame has already expired” to “we’ll make an exception and e-mail you a new coupon code to use in-store or online” … none of which has occurred. The best part – and I do mean that in the most facetious way possible – is that each attempt to

contact customer service has been met with an equally incompetent representative who, despite my relaying of the entire situation and the latest “incident” number provided, have no clue what I’m talking about, why I was given such an array of inaccurate information, or, quite frankly, what to do to rectify the issue. And this is their profession. Inspires all sorts of confidence, doesn’t it? As I write this, a confirmation e-mail has arrived in my inbox, detailing my “inquiry” (which one?) and providing not one, but two, completely different incident numbers, one in the subject line, the other in the body of the rather nondescript form letter. There is also a customer service number to contact which, upon dialing, takes you on a whirlwind tour of automated extensions before settling into hold music for a solid 15 minutes, followed by dead silence as the call disconnects. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to shop online. Ever. Again.

Dr. Walsh’s first job in education was as an elementary classroom teacher for the Diocese of Brooklyn, in a parish school where she spent eight years. After moving to the New York City public schools Dr. Walsh began to take on other roles in education. “In the public schools I worked as a classroom teacher, I was a professional developer, a librarian, an assistant

principal, and a principal. For me, it was very important to work each of those steps so that I would know what was expected. I would know how to guide people and how to give support to people who were doing these many varied jobs in education.” Dr. Walsh is a highly experienced educator. She earned her doctorate in school administration and instructional leadership from Saint John’s University in 2001 and is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Fellowship. She also possesses a master’s degree in Library Science from Saint John’s and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Training from Fordham University. She earned her BA in Child Study and Speech from Saint Joseph’s College, Brooklyn and earned additional credits in special education from Brooklyn College. In addition to serving as assistant superintendent

for curriculum and assistant superintendent for elementary schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Dr. Walsh has extensive experience as teacher and administrator including recent service as assistant superintendent for K-12 curriculum and instruction for the Wappingers Central School District. Previously, she served as principal of the Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School, Valley Stream, New York. For Dr. Walsh, the position with the Diocese of Rockville Centre and her return to Catholic education is the completion of a full circle. “For me it was like coming home.” Said Dr. Walsh. “I’m rooted in Catholic education, both as student and as teacher, and I look forward to leading this outstanding team and these beautiful schools into the future.”

On September 17th of this past year, Dr. Kathleen Walsh Ed.D. was selected as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The Town of Oyster Bay will host its annual College Hockey Challenge on Saturday, January 23rd. The University of Albany Great Danes will take on the Farmingdale State University Rams in a Men’s Ice Hockey game, with the winner receiving the prestigious Supervisor’s Cup Trophy. The event will be held at the stateof-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage beginning at 7:30 p.m. This game will showcase some of the best talent in the area. In addition to seeing some top tier

action on the ice, Town of Oyster Bay Youth Hockey program players will be given a chances to take part in free pre-game on-ice youth clinics prior to the game. These unique clinics will help participating youngsters hone their ice hockey skills, gaining valuable tips and insights from some of the areas most accomplished players. Admission is free but residents are encouraged to help others by donating two canned goods, which will be collected at the event by Island Harvest as part of Hockey Fights

Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Mike Elardo for winning the 2015 Jet Receiver Award as Nassau County’s top wide receiver in varsity football. This marks the second consecutive year that he has won the award. Mike led all seniors with

52 catches, totaling 876 yards with an average of 19 yards per catch this season. He also scored six touchdowns, leading the Braves to a return trip to the playoffs. During his three-year varsity career, Mike totaled 154 catches and 2,941 yards with a 19.1-

yard average per catch and 28 touchdowns. He is also a two-time All-Long Island selection, 2015 Conference Player of the Year and was named FirstTeam All-State last season (this year’s announcement pending).

The Hicksville Public School District and Hicksville Athletic Booster Club hosted former basketball star Chris Herren as he presented his harrowing life story to students and parents across the community. The program, which was open to parents of students in all grade levels and middle- and highschool students, was held in the filled-to-capacity Hicksville High School auditorium. Herren shared the story about his rise to success — an All-American athlete recruited by top colleges and drafted into the National Basketball

Association in 1999 - and spoke candidly about how he lost it all due to his descent into substance abuse and addiction. Herren, who made a miraculous recovery and has been alcohol and drug-free since August 2008, used his own life experiences to urge parents to stay involved in students’ lives, and stressed the importance of never letting them stray off course. The captivated audience members asked Herren questions toward the conclusion of his presentation. Nassau County Legislators Rose Walker and Laura Schaefer

were also in attendance, and Herren was presented with a citation in honor of his inspirational visit. Herren’s visit to Hicksville High School served as an empowering story of triumph that offered hope and lifelong lessons to the school community. It was also a testament to the district’s commitment to grooming and shaping the minds of its students to live healthy and enriched lives so that they can realize their dreams. Playground Funds Secured

The Hicksville School District is pleased to announce that Sen. Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) has secured $100,000 in state funding to undertake an improvement project. The funds would be used to replace, repair and renovate the playgrounds at the district’s seven elementary schools, which are used by students during the school day and by the community on nights and weekends. We will assess each playground and make a determination as to what upgrades need to be made. “The district is thankful for the additional funding from Sen. Martins and

the support he has shown helping our schools provide our children with the services and facilities they need and deserve,” said Dr. Carl Bonuso, superintendent of schools. “Our playgrounds provide our students with opportunities for exercise and socialization during recess. As a district, we stress the importance of focusing on fitness and health while also allowing the students to be children and enjoy playtime.” Also being purchased is additional equipment that will align with the district’s health and wellness curriculum and support its commitment

to battling obesity by increasing cardiovascular conditioning. In addition, funds will be used to purchase fibar, an engineered wood fiber play surface, to enhance safety for children. “By making these improvements, the Hicksville School District will be giving children a safer, more modern place to exercise and develop their social and problem-solving skills,” said Sen. Martins. “This is a project that will benefit Hicksville’s students and children throughout the community. I’m pleased to support the district’s efforts.”

Joan Story, Director of Bethpage Nursery School, was recently honored by students and educators at the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech annual Industry Advisory Recognition Brunch. The event is an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty and staff to thank invaluable mentors like Ms. Story for their ongoing guidance and support. Barry Tech partners with more than 800 Long Island

businesses, giving students the advantage of careerfield experience under the supervision of industry specialists who help them to develop the skills necessary to compete in the workplace. In addition to providing real-world work experiences, Barry Tech industry partners regularly visit classrooms to offer their expertise, and invite students to tour their facilities and learn about their respective businesses.

“Our industry partners are crucial to the success of our students,” says Work Experience Teacher Coordinator Randi O’Moore. “They share their experiences in the field, inform our students’ education with their expertise and help them to hone their skills. They give our students a real-life look at their chosen career fields.” At the brunch, Ms. Story was saluted by community leaders and government officials, awarded with a plaque honoring her contributions, and given a red carpet welcome by student ambassadors. But the day’s most important proceeding was when Ms. Story and her fellow industry partners met with members of the faculty and guidance department to inform the curriculum. The business leaders offered their input on new curriculum to ensure that it is up to date with the most current industry standards.

Students enrolled in the Research Skills and seventh-grade Project Beyond programs at H.B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset recently participated in their first Maker Faire Day. The festival of invention, inspired by the “maker movement,” calls for the creation and marketing of products that are recreated and assembled using unused, discarded raw materials, including

computer parts. Students were given boxes filled with a variety of materials, including cardboard boxes, egg cartons, old floppy discs, plastic bottles, straws, little toy cars and a lot of tape. They were asked to explore the materials available, collaborate with their groups and create an art piece or invention with what they were given. Students planned, innovated, encountered

challenges and exchanged ideas with each other in order to create something new. The wide range of creations included a lifesized model of the Statue of Liberty, various art pieces representing important humanitarian issues, models of cars, robots, energy-efficient buildings, working catapults and marble run structures.

For 23 year-old Jessica Heirtzler, summer camp has provided her with much more than a week away from home- camp saved her life. Heirtzler was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when she was 8-years-old. For years, she lived with constant debilitating pain, doctor’s appointments, medications, and emotional issues. It wasn’t until she first attended Camp Oasis as a high school junior that she felt like herself. “Camp saved my life. It’s not every day that medical students don clown noses and garish costumes to visit hospitalized children. But it’s not every day that the real Patch Adams comes to town. Adams, the social activist and physician made famous in a film starring Robin Williams, visited New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he delivered several lectures to medical students and faculty. Following his talk, he brought a group of medical students to the pediatric unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip,

where the group put their newfound clowning skills to practice. As the 17 students spread out visiting patient rooms, squeals of laughter filled the hospital’s corridors. Meanwhile, an intense game of foosball between the medical students and patients generated triumphant shouts, transforming the normally sedate pediatric floor into a hub of fun and activity. That was Adams’ goal. Espousing his philosophy that “love is the most important thing in life,” Adams encouraged the students to adopt a separate persona while

in clown attire in order to connect with patients, family members and staff. “There are times when laughter truly is good medicine,” said Catherine Caronia, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics at Good Samaritan. “Our patients and staff were delighted by the visit, and we’re thrilled to know that a future generation of physicians has had the opportunity to learn first-hand the value of bringing joy and playfulness to medical encounters. In fact, we have invited the students to visit our patients again soon to continue to apply the lessons they learned.”

SBA Approves Loans In just over a month, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $8.5 million in low-interest disaster loans for 242 businesses and residents in the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy. The SBA on December 2nd reopened the disaster loan filing period for businesses and residents recovering from Superstorm Sandy. “The legislation that reopened the Superstorm Sandy disaster loan filing period until December 1st, 2016 will do much to contribute to the continued rebuilding of the disaster areas’ infrastructure,” said

SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. “More than $8.5 million in low interest SBA disaster loans have been approved over the past month. This is a great start and we look forward to helping more small businesses, homeowners and renters with their long-term disaster recovery needs— regardless of whether they have an existing disaster loan, need more funds, or are applying for an SBA disaster loan for the first time.” The Recovery Improvements for Small Entities (RISE) After Disaster Act of 2015 gives

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private non-profit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage. Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters

are eligible up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed personal property. Interest rates are as low as 4 percent for businesses, 3 percent for non-profit organizations and 1.688 percent for homeowners and renters, with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition. Businesses and residents may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https:// disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Additional details on

the locations of recovery centers and the loan application process can be obtained by calling the SBA Customer Service Center at 800.659.2955 (800.877.8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@ sba.gov. The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is December 1st, 2016. The deadline to return economic injury applications is December 1st, 2016.
