Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the country’s largest credit unions, has partnered with Connoisseur Media and EAC Network to support the Coats for Kids drive. TFCU is supporting the initiative to provide kids with warm coats this winter by placing collection bins at its 25 branches. From now through February 28th, credit union members and the public are asked to donate new and ‘gently used’ warm coats, scarves, hats, gloves and earmuffs. The items will be distributed by EAC Network, a nonprofit organization serving over 5,000 Long Island children in crisis through its children and youth programs. “Connoisseur Media (WALK 97.5, K-98.3 & 103.1 MAX FM) is committed to supporting children in our community. The Coats for Kids drive allows us to help children here on Long Island immediately. The demand is significant for coats especially when we have very cold weather like we have been experiencing. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council will hold their 2018 Talent Competition on Saturday, March 3rd, at the Seymour Weiner Theatre at the Long Island High School for the Arts, located at 239 Cold Spring Road, in Syosset. “The TOBAC Talent Competition celebrates the extraordinary talents and inspiring performances by the Town’s young residents, promoting the celebration of performing arts within

We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

On Tuesday January 9th, Legislator Sunderman had the honor of swearing in the Officers of the LongIsland ABATE. There are fourteen board members, two of which were newly elected members. Following their swearing in we had discussed some concerns such as, how the potholes were going to be handled come spring time and road safety. “Sharing the road with our motorcyclists is important as well as to make sure everyone gets

home safe, at the end of the day. Unsafe roads pose a very real danger to motorcyclists and we have to make sure they are safe for all vehicles; whether they have two wheels or four.” said Sunderman The Long Island ABATE or American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education is an organization which strives to provide training and education for motorcycle riders. Additionally, they not only provide bikers rights, but the rights of all

motorists. Many of their members are not bike riders but advocates for those who do ride. Sunderman was so impressed by their organization that he joined as a non-riding member. Meetings are held in Ronkonkoma and Massapequa, in order to accommodate all Long Islanders. Building on earlier initiatives to enhance transparency and ethics, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board today approved a local law to create an Office of Inspector General to oversee all aspects of the Town’s contracting processes. In October 2017, the Town Board took the historic action of being the first local municipality to approve funding for such an office. “To restore the public’s trust in government, the Town Board and I took swift action to install a new, independent Board of Ethics with real and meaningful oversight. Building Dedicated Nassau BOCES renamed the building that houses its music and theatre programs at the Long Island High School for the Arts’ (LIHSA) in honor of the mother of legendary musician and Long Island native Billy Joel. The Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre was dedicated in late December at the art school’s Syosset campus. Rosalind Nyman Joel was born on February 15th, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, to Philip and Rebecca Nyman, who had emigrated from England. In a 1942 student musical production at City College of New York, she met Howard Joel, a German immigrant whose family had escaped Nazi Germany in 1939. World War II would interrupt their courtship, but after Howard’s service in the U.S. Army, he returned and they married in 1946. Rosalind supported various charitable endeavors. Progressing from her strong support

Syosset School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers hosted a series of Superintendent’s Student Cabinet sessions for representatives from all 10 schools throughout the district. During each session, the Dr. Rogers and the Syosset central administration team met for cookies and conversation with the thoughtful students. “We’re going to have a chat, because our job ultimately is to make sure you have the best education that you can possibly have,” Rogers told

the students to kick off each roundtable session, held in his conference room. Each session allowed the students to engage the administrators, discuss what’s going in the schools and express ideas for changes. The elementary students offered their opinions on topics such as elementary scheduling, the impact of technology, the use of Chromebooks and learning to write code with kidOYO. Middle and high school students spoke about their experiences balancing

academics by participating in extracurricular activities and joining sports teams. They provided positive feedback about what the district currently does to prepare students as they advance through the district and postgraduation. Students also expressed that they would like to discuss current national news and enroll in classes that teach valuable life skills such as paying taxes, leasing or buying a car and purchasing homes.

Ranked in the Nation The Syosset High School Forensics Society has done it again! Keeping with tradition, the team has been ranked among the best in the country by the National Speech and Debate Association. They are presently ranked 49th in the country in member strength for the 2016-2017 school year out of more than 3,000 participating schools in the United States. Every year NSDA ranks teams based on points and degrees earned in competitive and servicebased activities. Year after year the organization recognizes Syosset as one of the top teams in the country. Syosset Forensics Society coach and high school English teacher Lydia Esslinger, who is a member of the NSDA Coaches Hall of Fame, credits the

team’s consistent success to motivated students who know that “focus, determination and effort pay off. Yes, trophies and scholarships are nice rewards, but knowing how to research, to write, to think deeply and communicate effectively are skills that return their investment over an entire lifetime.” Currently comprised of over 150 students, Syosset Forensics has a long tradition as a standout cocurricular, interscholastic activity at Syosset High School, with multiple Long Island and New York State championships among its successes. Students participate in competitions to demonstrate their public speaking, acting, debating and writing skills, as well as their knowledge of philosophy and ethics, government and current

events. They are constantly researching, seeking out new material to use and practicing to stay sharp. Syosset Forensics scored big at last year’s New York State Forensic League Championship Tournament held at Hofstra University, as the team won first place in the Speech events division, placed second in both the Debate events and Student Congress divisions, and won the award for Best Overall team in the state. The team produced four individual state champions as well: Ronit Dhulia (Lincoln/Douglas debatenovice level); Jahnavi Arora and Aram Moghaddassi (co-champions in Lincoln/ Douglas debate-varsity level) and Iree Mann (Oral Interpretation-varsity level).

Appointed to Board of Directors

Michael Krummenacker, 45-year member of the Hicksville Fire Department, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). Krummenacker currently serves as President of the Nassau County Firemen’s Association. He is a past Commissioner of the Hicksville Fire District, where he has lived for over 67 years. He is also Financial Secretary of the South Shore Fire Departments Association of Long Island and a retired Nassau County Fire

Marshal. The new Director is heavily involved in his community in addition to the fire service. He is an active 67-year member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church, and longtime member of the National Fraternal Order of Police. According to Krummenacker, “The fire service faces many challenges, including training, education, retention and legislation. All of these need particular attention and consideration, and I look forward to what lies ahead.” He continued, “I am ready to work with my

FASNY colleagues to help make the New York State fire service better for all.” Prior to taking the Fire Marshal test, Krummenacker worked in banking for 17 years. He commented, “Because of the volunteer fire service, I had a new career. It gave me new opportunities, and I am honored to be able to give back through working with FASNY.” Krummenacker lives in Hicksville with his wife of almost 20 years. His brother is also dedicated to the fire service and is a past Captain of Hicksville FD.

Financial Literacy The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s (POBCSD) John F. Kennedy High School recently sent more than 50 juniors and seniors to each of the District’s middle schools to teach more than 200 fifth-grade students the importance of financial literacy. The program - part of Junior Achievement’s “More than Money” curriculum - focuses on empowering students with lessons in money management to promote future financial stability. Students from the John F. Kennedy High

School chapter of DECA - seniors Jacki Paradiso, Jake Trembley and Sophie Rothman - helped create and organize the event. Through the day-long program, the 5th grade students engaged with the older students - known as High School Heroes - in small groups. The fifth graders participated in a series of stimulating, educational activities designed to familiarize them with important financial terms and introduce them to tangible exercises where such terms would be applied and utilized in the real world.

This fifth-grade program is the result of a partnership between DECA and Junior Achievement of New York, which emphasizes teaching students tangible financial skills, including maintaining and creating budgets, the differences between financial institutions, opportunity costs and how to develop business plans. Overseen by DECA advisor, Lindsay DeLucca, this is the 8th year DECA has partnered with Junior Achievement in bringing Financial Literacy Day to the District.

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

His poignant song, “Rosalinda’s Eyes,” from the 1978 album 52nd Street, is a tribute to her, derived from the family history. Rosalind Nyman Joel passed away July 13th, 2014 at the age of 92. A longtime arts and music education advocate, Mr. Joel is a strong supporter of the Long Island High School for the arts. He conducted a Master Class for LIHSA students and has visited them in their classrooms. Mr. Joel pledged $1.5 million in 2016 to LIHSA. Of this amount, he contributed $1,000,000 in 2016, $250,000 in 2017

and the final $250,000 will be donated next year. In August, Mr. Joel gave a scholarship ($20,000) to a budding pianist who recently graduated from LIHSA to attend Berklee College of Music. The Joel Foundation also announced a pledge of $1 million to continue support for Exploring the Arts (ETA), the non-profit organization founded by legendary singer Tony Bennett and his wife, Susan Benedetto, dedicated to strengthening arts education in public high schools. With support from the Joel Foundation, ETA will work closely with LIHSA to create exciting opportunities and rigorous instruction for its music students over the next four years. As an ETA Partner School, LIHSA will receive $100,000 and engage with ETA’s network of 27 Partner Schools in New York City for peer-to-peer

Dr. Bonuso has written numerous educational articles and has served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Artillery, where his distinguished career earned him both the Army Commendation Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross. As the board moves forward with the process of selecting the district’s next superintendent of schools,

it is their intention to solicit input from staff and community residents regarding the most important professional and personal qualifications they will seek in the next superintendent, via the district’s website at www. hicksvillepublicschools. org. At a meeting of the Hicksville School District’s Board of Education on January 10th, the board officially accepted the resignation of Superintendent of Schools Carl Bonuso, Ed.D., for the purpose of retirement, effective June 30, 2018. “Dr. Bonuso, with the

district,” said Board of Education President Phil Heckler. “The collaborative environment that Dr. Bonuso helped foster will be his legacy to our district at a time when it was truly needed.” Dr. Bonuso is a wellknown and highly regarded Long Island educator. He served as the interim superintendent of schools in Hicksville during the 2014-2015 school year and was appointed as superintendent in the summer 2015. Under his leadership, the community passed a $40 million bond referendum that will support a new auditorium, state-of-the-art library media centers, new music rooms, air conditioning and an aquatic center for student and community use. During his tenure in Hicksville, Dr. Bonuso has

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) Board of Directors announces that Randell (Rande) Marie Bynum has been appointed as the Council’s newest Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following the recent retirement of former GSNC CEO Donna Ceravolo. Bynum, a third generation

Girl Scout, brings decades of experience enhancing the efforts of nonprofit organizations. Her work includes the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the Girl Scouts of USA, private corporations and media entities with a focus on education, community engagement and youth

empowerment. “Rande embodies the spirit of a G.I.R.L [Gogetter, Innovator, RiskTaker, and Leader], and the Girl Scouts of Nassau County is delighted to welcome Rande as our new CEO,” said Wanda Jackson, President of GSNC’s Board of Directors. “After conducting a nationwide search, we are confident that Rande will be a terrific fit to lead our Council. Her years of experience and leadership abilities within nonprofit organizations including the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA combined with her passion for empowering young girls will be a vital asset to us.” Prior to joining the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Bynum served as independent contractor at PwC Charitable Foundation. Bynum was

In addition, she was also the publishing director of family and community engagement at Scholastic Inc. She received a Master of Social Work with concentrations in program planning, administration and research from Stony Brook University and also holds a B.A. from Binghamton University. She also worked at the Girl Scouts of the USA, where she was responsible for the implementation of The Dove Self-Esteem Fund corporate partnership and the development of the Girl

Volunteers Wanted Fresh Air summers are filled with children running through the sprinklers in the grass, gazing at starfilled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children

from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Madisen, age 11, has visited the MacKinnon family for the past two summers. Host mom

Linda said, “Seeing the world through Madisen’s eyes and enthusiastic spirit has made our whole family appreciate what we have. On her visit, Madisen joined us in our daily summer activities. She tried lots of things for the first time that we often take for granted; this summer she learned how

to play tennis, attended her first yoga class, fed the horses that live next door, and swam in the ocean for the first time! Madisen really reminds us of how special the simple things are.” The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to
