The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, adding square footage to a home can cost homeowners anywhere from $7,000 to $100,000. When adding square footage to a home, homeowners may need to knock down an interior wall or walls, the cost of which can vary widely depending on the walls being knocked down. Loadbearing walls are needed to support the home, and while such walls can be removed, homeowners may need to hire structural engineers at additional cost to orchestrate such removals. In addition, homeowners can expect to pay more when knocking down walls that contain ducts or electrical wiring. It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. HomeAdvisor notes that the wall-removal process in old homes that contain lead paint or lathand-plaster walls is more intricate and may cost homeowners more money.

Congratulations to Hicksville High School junior Isabella Weber, the winner of this year’s Hicksville School District’s Holiday Card Contest. The annual Holiday Card Contest allows Hicksville students to put their creative skills to work in crafting a visual image for the district’s official holi-
day card. Isabella’s design depicts a cardinal boldly standing out in a wintery backdrop. Eligibility works on a three-year rotation between elementary, middle and high school art students. This year, high school art teachers submitted their top five student entries to Supervisor of Fine Arts Phil Grusen-
meyer for review by a consensus of central administrators. Isabella’s card was selected amid several impressive choices. Isabella was honored at the December Hicksville Board of Education meeting, where she was presented with a plaque that showcases her award-winning card.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Parks Department will begin to offer a night fishing parking permit to non-residents, effective January 1, 2020. In order to obtain the permit, a non-resident must be sponsored by a current Town resident who has already obtained a night fishing permit. Supervisor Saladino stated, “As the popularity of night fishing on Long Island has continued to flourish, the Town’s will begin to offer a new, nonresident night fishing parking permit. This parking pass, which must be displayed on dashboards while parking in Town lots where night fishing is permitted, will allow nonresidents to night fish at
four different locations in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the year.” Non-residents will be able to obtain a night fishing parking pass by submitting a $50 fee and being sponsored by a current Town resident who has obtained a night fishing permit. Each resident with a current night fishing permit will be able to sponsor one non-resident, and will be held responsible for the non-resident’s decorum while using Town facilities. Permits are available through the Town’s Parks Department, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. Night fishing hours are 7pm to 7am at select facilities. Night fishing is permitted at the following locations throughout the Town, during the
following dates: • January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 • Harry Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing • Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay • Centre Island Beach in Bayville • April 2020 through December 2020 • TOBAY Beach Night fishing parking permit does not substitute any additional requirements of New York State in regards to night fishing. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death of Long Island women. A Seasonal Scene Once again, students and staff at Woodland Elementary School created a festive atmosphere around the building as they draped the hallways and doors with homemade holiday scenes. Just prior to the December break, Woodland
opened its doors to families for a few hours after school to take in the scenery, munch on holiday cookies and cupcakes and sip hot cocoa, with PTA members serving up the warm, sweet refreshments. Snowmen, gingerbread men and women and other
fun seasonal characters abounded! Students could hang around the fireplace, make the scene in the photo booth, jump aboard the Polar Express or the Woodland Express or even take a sleigh ride through the backdrop of “Frozen!”

Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each year, the Town inscribes into the Walls of Honor the names of family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. RECOGNIZED FOR DONATING BLOOD - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino (left) recently recognized Arjun Prasad Mainali of Hicksville for his astounding accomplishments as a dedicated blood donor since 1987. Arjun Prasad Mainali has donated blood 172 times since August 20th, 1987 and has saved countless lives in the process. Arjun has donated blood in 17 countries on six different continents and in 14 different states in the United States of America. Arsjun Prasad Mainali has dedicated his life to educating, advocating, encouraging, promoting and creating awareness among thousands of people about the importance of blood donations, and because of this, Supervisor Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board commend him for his actions, and officially proclaim December 22, 2019 to be “World Blood Donor Arjun Mainali Day” in the Town of Oyster Bay in recognition of his selfless and lifesaving efforts. Supervisor Saladino remarked that this date will be particularly fitting because December 22, 1818 was the date of the first documented transfusion of human blood.
The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and nearly 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the
toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. NEW YORK STATE CLASS A CHAMPIONS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor and the members of the Town Board proudly welcomed members of the New York State Class A Champion Jericho High School “Jayhwaks” Boys Soccer Team and honored them at a recent Town Board meeting for their amazing state championship win. Several weeks ago they travelled to Middletown, New York and won the Class A State Championship with a 3-1 win over Greece-Athena of Rochester. It was an amazing accomplishment and a triumphant way to conclude a memorable season. It was the school’s fifth state soccer title in their history. On hand from Jericho High School Soccer were Head Coach Dani Braga and Assistant Coach Jim Whelan, who combined to provide championship leadership and direction. Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board presented the team with a commemorative sign to display at their school, as well as citations for the staff and parchment certificates for every team member.
