Community Health Needs The Long Island Health Collaborative is calling for your participation in an anonymous survey, because the health of your community depends on it. The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is a voluntary coalition that includes the Nassau and Suffolk County Departments of Health, Long Island hospitals

and community-based organizations, among others. LIHC members are committed to improving the health of Long Islanders and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play. The Community Health Assessment Survey was designed specifically for residents of Long Island. By distributing surveys

through their vast network of locally ingrained organizations, the LIHC is accessing the voices of all communities, including the underserved. Survey results will be used to help target health needs of individual communities and design specific programs to address these needs. “The survey takes less

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far. Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be. Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 15th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. During January, Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) wants to spread the word that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable if found early. Getting screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test is the key to prevention and survival. Screening is available to both insured and uninsured women at NUMC. “The New York State Department of Health’s Cancer Services Program (CSP) provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women — a subpopulation of women less likely to get screened,” said Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the most recent New York State data, about 70% of women without insurance have had a Pap test, compared to roughly 85% of women with health insurance.” The impact of insurance status on screening behavior was recently highlighted by

cancer screening to eligible New York State residents. There usually aren’t any symptoms of cervical cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage, making regular Pap tests the key to an early diagnosis. “It is especially important for women who have not had a Pap test within the past five years to get screened. Six out of ten cervical cancers occur in women who have never received a Pap test or have not had one in the past five years. Don’t delay, talk to your doctor or call the Cancer Services Program at NUMC,” (516.572.3300) said Dr. John Riggs, Chair of OB/GYN at NUMC. American Cancer Society researchers. They found that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was likely the cause of a large increase in the number of younger women (under the age of 26) getting diagnosed for cervical cancer at an early stage. The ACA allows for dependents to remain on their parents’ health insurance until the age of 26, giving these women the opportunity to get Pap tests, which can find cervical cancer early. “It’s wonderful that the ACA has helped some women get screened for cancer, but the fact remains that there are people who still remain uninsured,” said Dr. Politi. “The Cancer Services Program is here to provide life-saving cancer screening to our most needy residents.” The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women, ages 40 and older, in every county and borough of the state. The program also provides free breast and colorectal

Hicksville Middle School eighth-grader Jordan Wulff was selected as the winner of the 2015 Hicksville Public School District Holiday Card Design Contest and was presented with a plaque at the Board of Education’s December meeting. The district selects one winner annually from the various student entries submitted by art teachers throughout the district. The contest rotates

between the three teaching levels - elementary, middle and high school - and promotes the work of students of various ages. Wulff’s design was selected as the finalist from a pool of works submitted by middle school art students, and it was used as the district’s holiday card this year as a result. Wulff is a student in Kristin Lupardo’s Studio in Art class, an accelerated course offered to high-

achieving eighth-grade art students at the middle school. Along with the Board of Education, Lupardo, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso, Hicksville Middle School Principal Mara Jorisch and Supervisor of Fine Arts Philip Grusenmeyer were all in attendance to congratulate Wulff and her parents at the commemorative plaque ceremony.

The Junior Academy is a virtual program for exceptional students interested in STEM that provides access to a community of student peers from across the globe and mentoring from leading STEM practitioners. Each year, Junior Academy students compete in global challenges to solve real-world problems with the chance to win cash prizes and an all-expenses paid trip to New York City

Manhasset SEPTA’s gifted and talented division began the 2015 school year with over 100 people attending the Mad Science Fire & Ice show at the Manhasset Library on October 14th, the Superintendent’s Conference Day. The children in the audience participated in all demonstrations and were entertained by Xenon Zach, local scientist. He showed everyone how “Eggbert” his pet egg was too large to fit into a glass container but could get safely in & out in one piece using different properties of air pressure. Zach also demonstrated why some things float on air and some fall using straws and hair dryers. But when he brought out the leaf blower, the children couldn’t contain themselves! He then had four volunteers take a “Mad science shower” with frozen gas in front of the audience. Those brave children

who waited out a fire drill caused by a faulty light towards the end of the program got a special treat. They got to touch and experience a foggy ice storm created by dry ice! SEPTA Gifted and Talented also ran a new First Time French Class The program was run by Jessica Thalheimer who is working towards her Girl Scout gold award. The program met with an overwhelming demand from the community. The program not only quickly filled up but Thalheimer was able to add a second class session each week and there still was a waiting list. Over the seven week program, the children were taught numbers and colors in French, the French words for various animals, family members and different foods all while playing games, doing crafts, and enjoying fun worksheets she created. The participants also celebrated Halloween and

Thanksgiving as well as enjoyed French desserts on the program’s last session. Thalheimer rewarded the children with different prizes each week that she donated herself. She is hoping to continue a language program this spring by bringing in someone to teach another language since it was such a big hit with the kids and parents alike! For adults, SEPTA’s gifted and talented offered an expert presentation with Ms. Tobi Phillips, President and Founder of Village East Gifted, Inc., who came to the library on November 11th. She shared with the group her method of teaching and even ran a sample class for attendees. “We would like to thank her for coming out to do the event even though she was injured and had to come in a wheelchair,” Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented division director and SEPTA Vice President Joanne Thalheimer noted.

Holiday Tea The students also obtained donated gift cards and other prizes from local vendors which were raffled to the guests, which doubled as early holiday gifts for many senior citizens. This annual event is the first of two scheduled events this year for the senior citizens of the POB community. The Senior Citizen Prom will be held

at the high school in March of 2016, also organized by the Community Service Club. The senior citizen population in the community and students look forward to both of events each year. The students learn to give back to those that have given their community so much over the years.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
