Creativity and science will come together beginning in January as FIRST® Tech Challenge teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, along with their mentors, will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. More than 46,000 students in almost 20 countries will program robots to compete on a 12-foot by 12-foot field in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology and programmed using Java. It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year,
killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American Heart Association’s 16th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 15th at the

During January, Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Nassau University Medical Center wants to spread the word that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable if found early. Being screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test is the key to prevention and survival. Screening is available to both insured and uninsured women. “The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical
cancer screening to uninsured women a subpopulation of women less likely to get screened,” said Dr. Victor F. Politi, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the most recent New York State data, about 65% of women without insurance have had a Pap test within the past three years, compared to roughly 85% of women with health insurance.” “It’s wonderful that with the implementation
of the Affordable Care Act so many more New York women have gained insurance and can access cervical cancer screening, but the fact remains that there are people who are still uninsured,” added Dr. Politi. “The Cancer Services Program is here to provide life-saving cancer screening to our most needy residents.” The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to
uninsured women, ages 40 and older, in every county and borough of the state. The program also provides free breast and colorectal cancer screening to eligible New York State residents. There usually aren’t any symptoms of cervical cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage, making regular Pap tests the key to an early diagnosis. “It is especially important for women who have never had a Pap test or those who haven’t had one

Free Screenings within the past five years to get screened. More than half of all cervical cancers occur in women who have never received a Pap test or who have not had one in the past five years. We encourage women not to delay their screening, and to talk to their doctor or call the Cancer Services Program,” said Dr. John Riggs, Chairman of the Department of OB/GYN at NUMC. Saluting Industry Partners The students and educators of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech recently honored more than 100 local business leaders at the annual Industry Advisory Recognition Brunch. The event is an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty and staff to thank these invaluable mentors for their ongoing guidance
and support. Barry Tech partners with more than 800 Long Island businesses, giving students the significant advantage of on-the-job work experience under the supervision of industry specialists. The school’s industry partners help students to develop the skills necessary to compete in the workplace. In addition to providing

real-world experience, industry partners regularly visit classrooms to offer their expertise, and invite students to tour their facilities and learn about their respective businesses. At the brunch, industry partners were honored by Nassau BOCES administrators, government officials and community leaders. They
were given a red carpet welcome by Barry Tech student ambassadors, and awarded with plaques and certificates thanking them for their contributions. They were also given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center. But the day’s most important proceedings
were when the partners met with members of the faculty and guidance department to inform the curriculum. The business leaders offered their input on new curriculum to ensure that it is up to date with the most current industry standards. “Our industry partners are crucial to the success of our students,” says

It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Cheering to the Top The Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School Varsity Cheerleading team won first place at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Empire Regional Cheerleading Tournament. The team’s victory now qualifies them to compete on the national level at the upcoming Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School
Cheerleading Competition at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The girls have been practicing since August - before school started and, under the leadership of Head Coach Gail Corbett, will continue to work hard in the hopes of gaining its first national championship title. French Students Compete The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently organized an activity for seventh and eighth grade students enrolled in French class from Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School to participate in a Bûche de
Noël Competition. The young bakers prepared France’s most popular Christmas cake, shaped like a Yule log, after learning about French holiday customs. Teachers and administrators served
as the panel of judges, tasting 19 student-made submissions. Leo Goldberg won Best Overall title, Abigail Ruthen won for Best Presentation and Gerrit Herman won for Best Taste.

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the holiday celebrations as
imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Donations Received The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently teamed with the St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church to help provide assistance to families within the District who are in need this holiday season. As part of the initiative, local family and St. Margaret’s parishioners Dan and Debbie McGee, generously shopped for items on the families’ wish lists and purchased gift
cards to local supermarkets and gas stations. District staff - including social workers, guidance counselors, teachers and nurses - have worked with the St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church’s Outreach Committee since 2011 to identify essential programs to improve the quality of life for families within the Plainview-Old Bethpage community. In addition to the holidays, St. Margaret’s parishioners
have also helped donate school supplies and provide financial assistance to families in need throughout the school year. Gift Bag Donation
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently organized an activity for fifth grade students from PlainviewOld Bethpage Middle School to create artwork to be included in gift bags donated to patients at the Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center. The gifts were created to spread holiday cheer to sick children who will be spending the holidays in the hospital instead of
celebrating at home with their families and loved ones. The students assembled gift bags, which included a box of crayons or markers, a coloring book, a pack of stickers, a puzzle book and a sketch book. The gifts will be distributed to the children over the holidays. In addition, all gradelevels at Plainview-Old Bethpage Howard B. Mattlin Middle School contributed donations
to a toy drive. The toy drive was sponsored by The Afterschool Group (TAG), an after-school philanthropic program, which had its largest toydrive success since its inception. A special thank you to all students and their teachers for continuing this important and beloved tradition during this time of year.
