LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that. Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry. Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!” Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day. There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! Project Warmth Open One out of three households on Long Island do not earn enough to make ends meet, affecting their ability to heat their homes during the bitter winter months. United Way of Long Island’s Project Warmth has helped nearly 200 families, heat their homes since the program opened on December 4th, and with the frigid temperatures currently affecting our area, the critical need for this program is at its height. As Long Island’s only non-governmental, Islandwide emergency heating fund, Project Warmth is available all winter as a safety net for individuals and families who are facing energy insecurity and are unable to pay their heating bill. The program provides a one-time grant payment directly to oil and utility companies on behalf of the family, allowing them to use their available funds to pay for essentials like food or medication. “More than 250,000 families on Long Island struggle to afford basics like food, transportation and medical care,” explained Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “During the winter months, the added financial stress of heat can shatter their budget – especially when they are already living paycheck-topaycheck. Project Warmth eliminates dangerous choices such as leaving the stove on, or using space heaters for these families.

Children don’t need to sleep in their winter coats, seniors don’t need to keep their oven burning to stay warm. Parents feel secure knowing that they can now afford their other critical monthly expenses.” Those in need of

Snowed In Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here? January has always been my least favorite month. Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it. For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful. But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netﬂix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. No, January is not a long enough

January is just as important a month as any to not lose sight of the bigger picture even if it is a bit clouded by the frosted windowpane at the moment.

HOBY Ambassador East Meadow High School sophomore Leilani Blakeman has been recognized as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador for the 20172018 academic year. According to its website, HOBY, founded in 1958, is an organization that inspires and develops youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. As an ambassador, Leilani will participate with other teenagers in the HOBY Leadership Conference in June, where she will collaborate with recognized leaders in business, government, education and other professions to discuss

current world issues. Leilani was selected through a rigorous process that included an interview by faculty, administration and a former HOBY ambassador. She unanimously impressed the panel with her poise, confidence and genuine concern for others. Leilani is a very conscientious student who is enrolled in Advanced Placement and honors classes, and is involved in numerous extracurricular activities. She is a member of the school’s Model Congress, World Hunger Action and Key clubs, and is also an active member of the English, Social Studies and Tri-M Music honor

societies. With a passion for the arts, Leilani participates in the school’s Theatre Guild and serves as treasurer of the school’s choir. Outside of school, she takes private dance lessons and is active in the regional and local theater community. Her proudest moment in theater was making it to the final callback for the part of young Cosette in “Les Miserables,” on Broadway. “We are very proud to be represented by Leilani,” said guidance counselor Mona Allen. “She is mature, intelligent, sincere and a natural leader.”

This month, the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center will open registration to a variety of classes designed to help Long Islanders improve their speaking, listening, reading, writing and English skills, advance their education, and become qualified for employment or consider career changes. Courses being offered include English as a Second Language (ESL) and High School Equivalency (HSE) classes. Registration runs from January 18th through 29th, 2018. Specific dates,

times and locations are listed below. Prospective students must register in person at one of the locations listed below at the specified date and time, and should be prepared to spend a minimum of three hours or ESL registration and four hours for HSE registration. Photo ID is required for all students at all locations. Students must be at least 18 years of age and not enrolled in any local school district. There is a nonrefundable registration fee, ranging from $55 to $80 (based on

the class and its meeting times per week, course content, and location) payable by money order only. There are additional fees for textbooks and/or computer software. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called ﬂavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Anthony Macagnone announce that the fourth meeting of the Local Planning Committee for downtown Hicksville is scheduled for Thursday, January 18th, at the Town’s William P. Bennet Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street in Hicksville. The meeting is scheduled to take from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will continue the process of planning efforts for the community. “Earlier this year, the Town of Oyster Bay was thrilled to be the recipient of $10 million in Downtown

Revitalization Initiative funds from Governor Cuomo and the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council for downtown revitalization in Hicksville,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “Now, after three successful meetings, proposed plans and renderings are taking shape. I am excited to advance to the next step in the process of making our dreams for this community a reality, and invite residents to attend and observe.” In addition to planning committee meetings, the Town has hosted a series of successful public workshops, which

have seen tremendous turnout and great resident participation offering input on the potential uses for this grant opportunity. The Local Planning Committee (LPC) – comprised of local and regional leaders, stakeholders, and community representatives – have worked to establish and approve a communitybased vision for revitalizing the Hicksville downtown into a vibrant community. In addition to exploring housing opportunities, the creation of office space and restaurants, and revitalization of storefronts; potential projects may include

decorative pavers, attractive lighting, newly planted trees, benches, street art and a homogenous street and storefront signage program to create a strong sense of place intended to celebrate Hicksville’s history and cultural diversity. Furthermore, the Town envisions the creation

Open Registration Beginning in January of 2018, the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC) will open registration to a variety of classes designed to help members of the Levittown community improve their skills, advance their educations and become more qualified for careers.

Courses being offered include English as a Second Language (ESL) and High School Equivalency (HSE) classes. Registration will be held on Friday, January 19th, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. for HSE classes and on Monday, January 22nd, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. for ESL classes at St.

Bernard’s School, 3100 Hempstead Turnpike. Prospective students must register in person at the specified dates, times and locations listed above, and should be prepared to spend a minimum of three hours. Photo ID is required for all students at all locations. Students

must be at least 18 years of age and not enrolled in the Levittown school district. There is a nonrefundable registration fee, ranging from $55 to $80 (based on the class and its meeting times per week, course content, and location) payable by money order only. There are additional
