Presti, the group collected toy donations from middle school families and staff members throughout the month of December. All of the toys collected in the drive were

donated to the Sarah Grace Weippert (Sarah’s Angels) and Michael Magro foundations. Both organizations benefit children diagnosed with cancer.

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges. What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier. Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much. These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness. I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to

LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions. If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay. Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you. If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?” “Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition. Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,

my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop. Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day. You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

(NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling

logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in

recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any wax. Cartons are made mainly from paper with thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum. Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being recycled. Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are

broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make building materials. Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for recycling. Fact: Carton recycling is now available for 62 percent of U.S. households— more than 72.5 million homes—through curbside and drop-off programs. To find out where cartons are accepted, go to www. “Heart Attack” Noodles By Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York

Don’t let the name of this dish scare you, but we do recommend splurging on this one as a once in a while treat! For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown. As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion. “My mom made this dish for my family for as long as I can remember. She would prepare it for our neighborhood block parties, for Christenings, and on Christmas. This dish was always a big hit!” *Editor’s Note: Try serving with a side of sauteed greens for a balanced meal

What You Will Need:

1 Bag of Egg Noodles 1 Lb. of Fatty Bacon (you’ll need the fat for flavor) Fine Bread Crumbs - plain is best

Preparation:

Prepare Egg Noodles and set aside Cook bacon until crispy and set aside Pour warm bacon fat over egg noodles Crumble bacon and add to noodles Add in fine bread crumbs until all bacon fat is absorbed (you can eyeball it)

January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is! This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff ), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

projects and lastly, Mid-Week Meetups, which help people develop friendships based on shared interests and explore new social and recreational opportunities across Long Island! Some other initiatives this organization supports are Nassau Voice, Speed Friending, Yoga Without Boundaries, Emergency Preparedness Classes and the Nature Experience. Looking to donate? This foundation is collecting donations of crafting supplies to help manage their expenses for the Crafting Connection. As the days get shorter and the winter season approaches, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis Imbroto invites residents to take part in Co-Ed Recreational Programs for badminton, basketball and volleyball which will all be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic beginning in early January. Registration for these programs will be open throughout the month of December at the Athletic Center, which is located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville. “These recreational programs are a great way to have fun and stay active throughout the cold and dreary months of the winter season,” said Councilman Imbroto. “All of these recreational programs are open to residents ages 18 and older, and serve as a great opportunity to make

new friends and stay in shape during the winter doldrums.” The Co-Ed Badminton program will feature three sessions available for registrants to choose from: Tuesdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Fridays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 8:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. The Badminton program is 12-weeks long and costs $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. The Co-Ed Basketball program will feature three sessions available to choose from: Thursdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.; and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The Basketball program is also 12-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents. The Co-Ed Volleyball program will begin in early

pajamas during the month of December for children in need. For every set of pajamas contributed, Scholastic matches the donation with a book. This year, the school was able to collect more than 150 pajama outfits for the Family Service League in

Huntington. “It’s a good feeling to help make sure more children will be warm this year,” said second-grade teacher Lauri Holt. “This is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts at Central Boulevard.”

Warm Winter Wishes The monthly theme of “Thoughtful Thursday” at Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School continued on December 20th as students created snowflakes, winter decorations and poems to provide “warm winter

wishes.” The illustrations and written works were produced during in-class lessons and later delivered to two local nursing and assisted living homes, Atria Senior Living and Central Island Helathcare. “It is very difficult for

many residents to venture out during the winter,” said second-grade teacher Patricia Tierney. “To warm the residents’ hearts, our students will share ‘warm wishes’ and create a winter wonderland for them to decorate their room.”

Congratulations to Hicksville Middle School student Jasmine Roldan, the winner of the 2018 Hicksville School District’s Holiday Card Contest. The annual Holiday Card Contest provides Hicksville students with an opportunity to put their creative skills to work in crafting a visual image for the district’s official holiday card. Jasmine’s design depicts a group of ice skaters holding hands while gazing at the moon during a snow shower. Eligibility works on a three-year rotation

between the elementary, middle and high school. After reviewing the designs, art teachers submitted several top nominees to central administration for consideration. “Jasmine has always been a standout in my class,” said her art teacher Kristin Powell. “She approaches every project with a unique perspective that allows her to create artwork that is not only technically strong but also moving and meaningful.” Powell attributes much of Jasmine’s creativity to her overall versatility. She

is involved in a variety of activities both in school and out as a member of soccer, volleyball, track, drama club, the Social Awareness Club, Student Council and the National Junior Honor Society. She is also an accomplished singer and has performed at Radio City Music Hall.
