The Long Island Community Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to Suffolk County United Veterans to help launch 24-hour, peersupported Crisis Respite and support services program for Veterans who are experiencing risk symptoms such as those associated with mental health challenges of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury. The Crisis Respite program will operate at the newly-named John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank and will provide a safe milieu for Veterans experiencing distress. Sea Tow is proud to announce that the “StuffA-Boat” donation drive for the 2013 holiday season was a huge success. Sponsored nationally by Sea Tow Services International, the nation’s leading marine assistance service provider, and hosted by Sea Tow operators across the country, the campaign’s goal is to provide those less fortunate in local

communities with some badly needed assistance and cheer during the 2013 holiday season. The Southold “Stuff a Boat” donation drive hosted by Sea Tow Services International, Inc., took place December 7th through 14th. All collected donations benefited CAST (Community Action of Southold Town) as well as NFAWL (the North Fork

Animal Welfare League) and were delivered on Tuesday, December 17th despite the snow. Sea Tow International employees gathered in the morning and stuffed the Sea Tow Twin-Vee boat that had been servicing Montauk boaters this past summer with all the donations. Students from Mattituck High School as well as Southold Pack 6 Cub

Scouts volunteered to be at Sea Tow International headquarters and collect donations. Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout volunteers, and another raffle for the Southold and Mattituck/Cutchogue Elementary Schools students who made donations. The Webelos 1 den won the Scout raffle, and Aiden Russell, a 5th grader from Southold Elementary, won the school raffle. “The ‘Stuff a Boat’ campaign is our way of giving back to Southold and to other local communities nationwide,” said Capt. She smoothly transitioned to a multiple patient scenario while maintaining a professional demeanor throughout the entire call. “Christine provided

care for a Suffolk County resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,” said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a

job well done.” Christine consistently remained calm and reassuring toward the caller as she assisted in the successful delivery of the newborn baby girl. The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived on scene post-delivery, to take over pre-hospital care of both the mother and her newborn.

Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Toy Drive Organized

This Christmas, the Hicksville Lions Club organized a Toys for Tots event in which Lions Daniel Hallak and James Tsimis collected toys during the holiday season. On Christmas Eve, Dan and James delivered the toys to the children in Nassau University Medical Center’s Pediatric Department, a moment that brought some joy and happiness in the lives of the children spending their

holiday at the hospital. The Hicksville Lions Club, established in 1942, has been a vital organization to the philanthropic endeavors of Hicksville and the surrounding communities. The Lions club is comprised exclusively of volunteers who contribute their time and resources to improve the lives of the underserved. In the rich 71 year history of the Hicksville

Lions Club, milestone achievements include awarding scholarships to our high school students, contributing to the youth club, the Guide Dog Foundation, diabetes education, diagnostic instruments to hospitals, anonymous holiday gifts to families in need, the camp for the blind and hearing impaired, and sight preservation projects and the Lions Eye Band, which provides the gift of sight.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! - Mrs. Camman’s Kindergarten class from Grace Day School participated in a Christmas Nativity scene last week. Shepherds, angels, wise men and the Holy Family formed a procession while the first and second graders sang songs of Christmas and narrated the greatest story ever told. The slightly wiggly, somewhat giggly, yet ever-smiling kindergarteners reminded all of the true magic and wonder that Christmas holds.

WREATH SALE SUCCESS - Brave Cub Scouts from Pack 696 lined up to advertise for their annual Christmas wreath sale on Sunrise Hwy. They had great courage to stand against temperatures in the 20‘s with a wind chill of 11ºF. They captivated the attention of mall shoppers as they sat in their cars waiting to enter Sunrise Mall. The scouts raised over $1,200 in sales which is to be used for their spring adventure outings. A big thank you to the residents of Massapequa for showing their support for scouting!

On Saturday, December 7th, at 9 a.m. in the morning, members of the Knights of Pythias and volunteers met at the John West School in Bethpage. It was the 18th consecutive year that the Knights of Pythias Coats for Kids Committee met with area coordinators Jean and Jack Geagen for this charitable event. Through the efforts of Jean and Jack Geagan,

almost a thousand coats and assorted items were collected in the area schools and businesses and brought to the John West School. Members of the Knights of Pythias then delivered the coats and other items to those in need. Coats are brought to many places - upstate, downstate and in between. The coats have numbered into many, many thousands over the

past 18 years, and the organizations and people receiving these coats will always remember the kindness of those who donated in times of need. The Knights of Pythias will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in February 2014. The Coats for Kids program is one of many programs that help people. New members are always wanted. Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer. Long-distance caregivers

provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month arranging care services and half said they spend

another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their

caregiving responsibilities. Twenty-five percent of the surveyed long-distance caregivers had shortened their workday while they were caregiving and 36 percent reported missing full days of work. Twelve percent had taken a leave of absence. The forces that have created today’s longdistance caregiver realities, including an aging population, families separated by distance, more women entering the workforce, and global competitiveness among companies, are unlikely

to reverse themselves in the near future. Rather, the challenges and workbalance issues are likely to accelerate. Clearly, longdistance caregiving already impacts retention and productivity. What can an employer do? Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well as providing information and help in coordinating eldercare, are definitely worthwhile investments, compared to the cost

of attrition and lost productivity. And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial. For example, voluntary pooling of frequent flyer miles for employees who need to travel on family emergencies is an idea worth considering. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider

technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over
