Scaring Away Hunger

n the spirit of the holiday season, students and staff throughout the district are doing their part to give back to the community and to charities. At Dutch Lane Elementary School, students and staff have been collecting toys to donate to the John Theissen collection site in Wantagh. As a prelude to the holiday season, the school also hosted a Scare Away Hunger Food Drive. Thanks to all for their generous contributions to this worthwhile cause!

Civilian performers will include the Breitling Jet Team, Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, Lt. Col. John Klatt – Air National Guard, the John Klatt Airshows – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco

The United States Air Force Thunderbirds last headlined the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach in 2009 and were

scheduled to appear again in 2013, but were forced to cancel due to government sequester budget cuts. “We welcome the team back to Long Island with great enthusiasm,” continued Gorman. “Over 360,000 spectators chose the Bethpage Air Show as their Memorial Day holiday weekend destination in 2009, when the Thunderbirds last visited. We are confident that their return to Long Island in 2015 will draw in a sizeable crowd as well,” said Linda Armyn,

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and concert featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 14th. Reverend Joseph Davanzo welcomed everyone. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Messiah portion featured a full orchestra and soloists. The service concluded with the “Hallelujah” Chorus. Refreshments and fellowship followed. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year,

The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. SUNY College at Old Westbury has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the seventh consecutive year. The Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships. During the past year, Old Westbury students have completed over 16,000 hours of service to various local organizations. “As part of our mission, we believe in integrating the classroom and the community,” said College President Calvin O. On The Horizon By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Music students and members of the Robbins Lane Elementary School chorus, in the Syosset School District, recently held its “Chorus Cares” coat drive in anticipation of the dropping temperatures. Throughout the month

of December, students gathered lightly used coats and jackets, as well as food, and piled them up in music teacher Dr. Catherine da Silva’s chorus room. Once the goods are finished being collected, school officials will drop the coats

off at a nearby One Warm Coat agency, while the food will be dropped off at Island Harvest. The coats and food will be distributed to needy families throughout Long Island.

Police Officer Visit Police Officer Favata recently visited first grade Daisy Troop 3450 to speak with the girls about what a police officer does as well as “stranger danger.” Officer Favata showed the Daisy’s some of his

equipment and explained what the equipment was used for. The girls especially loved trying on his helmet, bullet-proof vest and reflective vest. In addition to earning their “Respect Authority”

to cheer them up and donated $1 each toward brain cancer research. Third-graders participated in Operation Gratitude as a way to show appreciation for the nation’s troops, and sent care packages. Fork Lane, along with Burns Avenue Elementary School, raised more than $12,000 for the American Heart Association. Students and staff at Lee Avenue Elementary School participated in a Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. clothing donation drive in memory of late teacher Mary D’Andrea. The Student Council at Old Country Road Elementary School held a food drive prior to the holiday season. At Woodland Elementary School, students conducted

a coat and toy drive as well as a Giving Tree to benefit the local community. At Hicksville Middle School, the student council donated 600 pounds of food to Island Harvest, while the 8th Grade Activities Advisory collected toys for the Michael Magro and Sarah Grace Weippert Foundations. At Hicksville High School, students and staff partnered with the Social Service Volunteers of Nassau to host a gift and toy drive. The school’s Key Club also collaborated with the Kiwanis Club of Hicksville and participated in a food drive for local community members.
