Plainview Water District Collects a Mountain of Toys to Support the Foundation Plainview-Old Bethpage continues to show its generosity year in and year out by contributing to the Toys for Tots Foundation. As it has done in years past, the Plainview Water District (PWD) proudly partnered with the Toys for Tots Foundation, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. This year, over 100 toys were collected by the District. “We are consistently

impressed each year with the kindness and participation shown by the members of our community during the holiday season,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Despite all of the challenges of the past year, we had an excellent turnout. These contributions are so valuable in making certain the holiday season is special for so many others. We look forward to continuing to support the Toys for Tots Foundation next holiday season.” The U.S. Marine Corps

Reserve ‘Toys for Tots’ Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide all children across the United States with happiness and joy throughout the holiday season. Through the gift of a new toy, disadvantaged children will not be overlooked during the holidays, and will know that a community of people cares for them. Post 9/11 Veterans To Be Recognized For Their Service

Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conflicts after 9/11. Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and

reflection space for veterans along with their families. “We are excited to have the assistance from our community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” said Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us. The estimated cost to build the monument is $150,000 and all the groups involved are currently working to raise the needed funds. Bethpage High School Scholars Accepted To Prestigious Math Institute

The Bethpage School District is proud to announce that Bethpage High School scholars Daniyal Khambati, Laasya Marada and Ankur Raghavan were accepted to the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted & Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury. They are among 85 students throughout Long Island who will pursue the study of mathematics and its applications. To qualify for this honor, the students the institute selected for its three divisions competed

against approximately 450 of the top-ranking students recommended by educators from public and private schools on Long Island. Selection by the institute implies that a student is among the top one-tenth of 1% in math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade. Acceptances were based on four criteria: school transcript, teacher recommendation, a brief statement written by the student and a rigorous entrance exam. Each student will spend a total of 50 hours in classes during the course

of 20 Saturday mornings. The curriculum covers mathematical topics from algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory, in addition to topics not included in the standard courses of study. These topics include problem-solving applied to probability, theory of finite differences, science applications and mass point geometry. The district congratulates Khambati, Marada and Raghavan on being accepted to SUNY College at Old Westbury’s prestigious math institute.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Clerk LaMarca, and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato cautioned residents who leave donations in collection bins to make sure the organizations behind those bins have good intentions. Particularly during the holiday season, Town officials have witnessed a proliferation in illegally-placed bins asking residents to drop off clothing or toy donations.
