Syosset Student Debate Win

Two students from Syosset High School’s Forensics speech and debate team, Diya Chadha and Malini Rudra, represented the United States at an international student debate competition held at the 2018 International Global Tourism Summit in Honolulu October 1-3, and won first place in the competition. Diya and Malini were selected by the Hawaii Tourism Authority to represent mainland USA at an international competition in Hawaii. High school debaters from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Hawaii and one team from New Jersey debated the resolution that the use of Artificial Intelligence in the tourism industry will improve the visitor experience. Students had
to prepare and defend cases that both affirmed and negated the resolution in debates before panels of judges. Many of the 2,000 members of the tourism industry from 32 countries who attended the Summit watched the final round featuring the two teams with the best records from preliminary rounds of competition as Team USA, Diya and Malini, negated the resolution and defeated Team Taiwan. The students summed up their experience this way: “Having debated at different tournaments across the east coast, debating in Hawaii was new and very exciting. We are so glad to have met so many fantastic high school debaters from around the world. And as public speakers, we got a special kick out of having the keynote speaker at the
conference be Sophia, a robot.” Forensics coach/ advisor Lydia Esslinger nominated her debate captains Diya and Malini in a letter of recommendation accompanied by the girls’ record as partners in local competitions. “I always say, join Forensics, see the world,“ she said. “Although the team travels widely throughout the USA, mainlanders never compete in Hawaii. I wanted the girls to have the opportunity to visit the state farthest from us New Yorkers, engage in conversation about the increasingly important issues surrounding AI, and meet their peers from other countries. It was a wonderful experience, thanks to the generosity of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.”
Children’s Hospital Donation King Kullen Grocery Company, Inc. recently presented Stony Brook Children’s Hospital with a check for $3,000, a portion of which was raised through the generosity of King Kullen and Wild by Nature customers during an in-store scanned coupon program in August and September. Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in Nassau County also
received a $3,000 check from King Kullen as part of the same campaign. Stony Brook Children’s Hospital provides advanced medical care for Long Island’s children and is part of a major academic medical center. A Magnet children’s hospital, Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center is part of Northwell Health and ranked by U.S. News & World Report as
one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals. Headquartered in Bethpage, NY, King Kullen is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as American’s first supermarket. Founded in 1930 by Michael J. A Little Bit Goes A Long Way There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”
I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then
why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

New Year, New Me Mindset.

If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.
giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!
It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.
One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.
My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us. I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose. I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves. This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,
After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. Author and Donation The Bethpage Union Free School District’s Board of Education December 18th meeting featured a pair of special presentations. The Bethpage Education Foundation presented a donation of $10,000 to the board that will be used toward STEM projects and equipment in the district. The Educational Foundation is an organization that seeks to provide meaningful assistance to the educational program in the district. “The support from the Educational Foundation
is unmatched,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider. “This donation will help to further the growing STEM program in our district for our students and teachers.” Author and Charles Campagne Elementary School fourth-grader Sophia Marullo also sat in front of the board to speak about her recently published book “Sophia N.R. Marullo and the Crazy Days.” Sophia started writing the book when she was 7 years old and was published when she was 8 years old and in third grade
at Charles Campagne. The book is written and illustrated to describe the zany adventures of Sophia’s imagination. Inspired by the Junie B. Jones series, Sophia chronicles her crazy days at home and school. Sophia was generous enough to sign a book for each board member that was distributed by Schneider at the end of her presentation. “We look forward to reading Sophia’s first book and look forward to her next adventures,” said Schneider.

Student Athlete Commitments On December 11th, eight Bethpage High School seniors declared their commitments for fall 2019 by signing national letters of content to continue athletic careers at the collegiate level. Joined by Superintendent of School David Schneider, Director of Athletics John Franchi and Principal Nicholas Jantz as well as their coaches, parents and siblings, the seniors made their future paths in
college athletics official. Teamwork Lesson From Sparky The New York Islanders mascot Sparky was on hand to give a lesson in teamwork at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Charles Campagne Elementary School during an Islanderssponsored school assembly program on December 5th. Hosted by Islanders Community Events Tour
member Dina, students were treated to Islanders videos as well as a visit from Sparky. Following presentations, students and a teacher volunteer, Mrs. Tarkin, demonstrated an activity in teamwork where groups were tasked with dressing an individual in hockey gear. Each
student in the building was sent home with an Islanders fan pack. Charles Campagne thanks Sparky and the community events team for bringing the lesson of teamwork to the students.
Coding with the Grinch Third- through fifthgrade students across the Bethpage Union Free District’s elementary schools displayed their computer science skills during the Hour of Code on December 4th. The lesson was introduced through a live broadcast from the Bethpage High School television studio by Superintendent of Schools David Schneider, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Michael Spence and Director of Technology Andrew Choi. The three administrators explained the purpose of the Hour of Code and described what the
students would be doing on their school-issued Google Chromebooks. Students logged on to Code.org to complete missions with the Grinch. Each student programed the Grinch and his dog Max through coding on the site to collect gifts, throw snowballs and operate a sleigh. Hour of Code is a global movement presented by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org, according to its website. The program reaches millions of students in more than 180 countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and
computer programming. Through the district’s Hour of Code, students were able to ask questions to Mr. Schneider, Mr. Spence and Mr. Choi via Google Classroom. Prior to December 4th, students completed leadin activities surrounding computer science topics and skills. “We hope the students enjoyed the Hour of Code and were as excited to collaborate as a district as the administrators were,” said Mr. Schneider. “Helping the Grinch was educational while combining the fun of the holidays!”

Avoid Surprise, Winterize (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather. “Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency
when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.” Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however. Surprisingly,
full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads. 4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop.
5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level
in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield. In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit
with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.
