Broadway Supports The stars came out for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) at the school’s third “Broadway Supports LIHSA” fundraising event. The gala production featured Broadway stars who donated their time for a spectacular one-night only event to help raise money toward and awareness of LIHSA. The muchanticipated annual fundraiser for Long Island’s only public high school for the visual and performing arts (LIHSA) has become a premier event for the greater
theater community. LIHSA students had the opportunity to perform twice during the evening, along with the stellar cast of Broadway celebrities. They opened with a medley from On Your Feet and returned to back-up Wayne Pretlow as he sang, “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” from Guys and Dolls. “It is deeply touching that these talented Broadway entertainers donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!” Before each performance, the stars briefly shared their
backgrounds with audience members, which was followed by an evening of extraordinary performances. A duet featuring In Transit beat boxer Steven “HeaveN” Cantor and dancer Evan Ruggiero, whose determination and passion for tap dancing prevailed over bone cancer and a “peg leg,” resulted in a mid-show standing ovation that brought down the house. Dancer, choreographer and LIHSA alum Buddy Casimano returned to his alma mater to perform a stunning dance number for the adoring crowd. Also featured were child performers Ayla Schwartz, who is ten years old and about to make her Broadway debut as young Elsa in Frozen the Musical, and Anthony Rosenthal, who recently starred as Christian Borle and Stephanie J. Block’s son Jason in Falsettos. Lana Gordon performed “All That Jazz” from Chicago, having recently starred as Velma Kelly in the Broadway Company opposite pop icon Brandy. The evening’s show-stopping finale was delivered by Robert Cuccioli, who performed “This is the Moment” from his Tonynominated role in Jekyll and Hyde. The entire cast spent the day at LIHSA rehearsing and spending time with students during a Q & A session where they shared stories about their careers and offered insights to the industry. Theater Tech students worked steadily throughout the day to ensure the technical aspects of the show were executed smoothly. At the start of 2016, pop music legend Billy Joel donated $1 million to LIHSA, along with his support of the school and its 40-plus-year history of nurturing Long Island’s up-andcoming artists. “I went

They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building
shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. club. SADD members visited Central Boulevard, Charles Campagne and Kramer Lane classrooms, where they educated fourthand fifth-graders about avoiding the signs of bad habits and how to make healthy decisions with
a game of bingo. Every student received a bingo card containing a healthy habit and characteristic in each box. The young students were awarded a red ribbon sticker, pencil and bingo chip for lining up five answers in a row.

The day kicked off with faculty and administrators distributing Thoughtful Thursday T-shirts to students and staff. The new shirts reflect the school’s motto of choosing kindness,
believing in oneself and standing up to bullying. The district thanks the Central Boulevard PTA for providing every student with a shirt. Wearing their new gear, students in grades K-3 colored in pictures for the nonprofit group, while older students wrote positive messages and drew colorful illustrations.

It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them. During the event, Brushstrokes Artist Michelle presented Mr. O’Connor with one of her beautiful paintings to express her appreciation for his support. The Children Center’s Ukulele Club performed “Little Hands” by Inland Sky to the delight of the audience. The newlyformed club consists of students who learn to play a variety of songs on the exotic instrument. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

The Hicksville Public School District administration and Board of Education would like to thank the community for supporting the bond referendum on November 14th. Both propositions, which carry no additional tax impact to taxpayers, passed with overwhelming support. Proposition One, which passed 822 to 256, will bond approximately $26.8
million in order to perform necessary facilities and educational upgrades for the students and community. These include roof replacements, library media centers, the addition of technology rooms, and heating, air conditioning and electrical system upgrades, districtwide. Proposition Two, which passed 700 to 375, authorizes the district to construct an Aquatic
Center, featuring an indoor swimming pool and related additions, including a lobby, lavatory, locker facilities, paved parking lot and machinery. Thank you again to all of those who voted. Additional information is available on the district’s website at www. hicksvillepublicschools. org.

Family Service League, a Long Island based nonprofit human service organization, is proud to announce that two additional Caregiver Supports Groups have been formed. These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005. These services include individual counseling, support groups and
trainings. Timely topics such as estate planning, stress management and nutrition are discussed. On average, FSL has seen 85 clients each month in 1:1 counseling and support groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources. According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars
annually. Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report feeling emotionally stressed, but 94 % say that it is important for them to provide the care for their loved one so they can continue to live independently in their own home. “Families often find themselves thrust into caregiving situations based on a crisis situation. They can become quickly overwhelmed by the enormity of the caregiver role and their own limitations based on distance, job obligations, financial restrictions, and other family responsibilities,” said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President. “This is
compounded by the lack of information about available services. FSL support groups provide the resources families need and there are no fees charged to those who attend.” Caregiver issues may include stresses related to the actual activities
associated with caregiving, fear and worry about a loved one dying, concerns about the caregiver’s own health, and guilt associated with feelings of frustration and anger. This program continues to thrive and develop as a vital resource for caregivers.

Focus on Fire Safety In recognition of October as National Fire Prevention Month, members of the Bethpage Fire Department visited students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District to educate
them about general fire safety. The local firefighters discussed their uniforms, the proper way to stop, drop and roll, and how they search homes during a fire. They explained the
importance of formulating a safe escape route and designating meeting places should a fire occur in their home, and concluded the assembly by answering students’ questions.

Soaring Eagles John F. Kennedy Middle School students in the Bethpage School District recently participated in Soaring Eagles Day, an annual character education program at the school. Kicking off the day, students in grades 6-8 attended two assemblies, “Everyday Hero” by Chris Poulos and “Creating
the Champion Within” by Molly Kennedy, where they learned about positive mindset thinking, perseverance, self-discipline and responsibility. Following, teachers administered a variety of classroom lessons, during which students shared their reactions to the
assemblies, played team building games and wrote inspirational messages to athletes of the Special Olympics, which the district will host in May.
