They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room,

building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

Award of Excellence and Honorable Mention winners in Part One of the Art League of Long Island’s 62nd annual Members’ Exhibition have been selected by exhibition juror Professor Seung Lee, Director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies Long Island University, Post Campus. While entry into the exhibit is open to all Art League members, each year a highly esteemed guest juror singles out a select few for special recognition. It’s part of the 2018 High School Honors Performance Series under the direction of renowned conductor, Dr. Jeffery Redding. This is the third time Marissa has been accepted to perform in the series The high school junior is also the Treasurer of LIHSA’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island. The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

with the original bricks; the facade is covered with shingles similar to what was original to the building. Anthony Scotto has graciously committed to donating all proceeds from the first week of business at One North to various charities, with a minimum donation of $75,000! Breakfast Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th, at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time Activist for Recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. The sharing was powerful and poignant for all gathered at the event. Says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman,

“What a day to celebrate recovery! LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th Annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” Special thank you to our four special speakers, who shared their story of recovery as a family. Their story was poignant and deeply felt by many gathered. Thank you to CoChairs, Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery and Nancy Beckett of Seafield Center for focusing this event on

recovery – the time is right to focus on the good people living in recovery in our communities. Funds raised will go to further LICADD’s 61-year mission of offering support and assistance those who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. LICADD’s promises never to turn anyone away due to inability to pay for services. LICADD’s focus is to help the individual get well. This event is named after Father Peter Sweisgood, a past Executive Director at LICADD. Father Sweisgood was passionate about sharing the promise of serenity achieved by living a sober life. His charisma and enthusiasm drew people to him to listen, learn and accept help. We honor this good man for

his dedication and have named the “Fisher of Men” award for his lifelong commitment. 2017 Fisher of Men honoree, Ms. Patti KellyBarker aptly refers to herself as an Activist for Recovery. Ms. KellyBarker’s connection to the field of recovery and to Fr. Sweisgood runs very deep. While working together at LICADD, Fr. Peter encouraged Patti to further her education, which she did achieving a masters in social work from Stony Brook University. Kelly-Barker has taught prevention education programs to children, volunteered at jails in Nassau and Suffolk counties and offered her services to families in need through family

interventions, judicial advocacy and assisted those in recovery secure sober living arrangements. Established in 1956, LICADD has continuously delivered successful evidence-based programs to prevent alcoholism, treat substance abuse, and promote addiction recovery. With offices in Westbury, Hauppauge, and Riverhead, LICADD provides a comprehensive array of support programs for family members and loved ones of addicted persons, as well as network of recovery support programs for persons seeking to maintain their sobriety. LICADD provides crisis interventions, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment

(SBIRT), and planned family interventions. Our prevention programs include our Student Assistance Programs for children grades K-12, parent education and support groups, alcohol education classes, and professional trainings. Honored with Art The Hicksville community’s senior citizens were honored with an afternoon filled with food, fun and entertainment on November 2nd at the Hicksville Public School District’s 26th annual Fall Senior Citizen Luncheon. Hicksville High School

student volunteers served hors d’oeuvres and meals to the special guests, who were also treated to special performances by the school’s marching band, string ensemble, chamber singers and theater department. One of the school’s gymnasiums, set up beautifully as a grand

ballroom for the luncheon, also featured artwork and table centerpieces created by students. The event was a harmonious and heartwarming way for students to create bonds with the elder members of the community.

It was a spooky good time for learning in the Bethpage School District as students at Central Boulevard Elementary School collaborated on different Halloweenthemed exercises in science, technology, engineering and math. The project paired the fifth-graders in Christine McGuire and Allison Robb’s class with the first-graders in Erin Austin’s class to apply their knowledge to three challenges, each designed with Halloween in mind. One challenge required students to estimate the correct mixture of baking soda and vinegar to cause a

reaction that would inflate a balloon to the largest size possible. In addition to the two ingredients, each team was given a water bottle, a spoon and a balloon decorated to look like a ghost. For the second challenge, students engaged their problem-solving skills to transport a pumpkin across the classroom without actually touching it with their hands. They were given a foot of yarn and a pumpkin to complete the mission, but were not allowed to tie the yarn to the pumpkin’s stem. Concluding the activities, the students were asked to build the

sturdiest tower possible out of pumpkin candies and toothpicks. Each team was given a certain number of candies and toothpicks to construct a tower that could be no less than eight inches in height. As part of the latter two challenges, the students were expected to sketch out their ideas and record their results, including why they felt their methods were successful and what they would do differently next time. Regardless of whether they met their intended goals, every student learned important lessons in STEM and teamwork.

students brainstormed and constructed homes in various shapes that would protect the witch from the weather and unwanted visitors. They discussed how they built their homes and reflected on the challenges they faced and what they could have done better.

LIHSA Open House Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all high school students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to an Open House on Thursday, November 16th, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. LIHSA is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Prospective students from across Long Island are invited to meet with LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, tour the campus, meet with expert faculty and staff, and experience classes

focused on their specific interests in the visual and performing arts. Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art class, take a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and participate in much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff. Interested students can also learn

about LIHSA’s Summer Arts Academy for grades 6-12. As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel, actor and director Ralph Macchio; Eric Bloom of legendary classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor

Dance Company; and world renowned violinist Patrick Yim, to name only a few. They also get to perform alongside Broadway stars during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker magazine, designed successful swimsuit lines,

and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center. Graduates have also earned prestigious scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction

and experiences offered at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Each year, we look forward to our annual Open House to showcase the school’s programs, as well as the talent our students possess. Paw-sibilities In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, students at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District learned about positivity from canine artist Dagger DogVinci. During the school’s

“Don’t Limit Your Possibilities” assembly, Dagger’s owner, Yvonne Dagger, explained how Dagger became an artist after not being able to fulfill his duties as a service dog. With a paintbrush in

mouth and a wagging tail, Dagger created an abstract masterpiece one brushstroke at a time. Students cheered and applauded as Dagger included different colors into his artwork.

Sweet Sounds Charles Campagne Elementary School students in the Bethpage School District used the power of music to discuss respect, kindness and inclusion with the help of singer/songwriter Brian Chevalier.

In honor of October as National Bullying Prevention Month, Chevalier engaged students by teaching them song lyrics, sign language and choreography for each of his songs, which discussed ways to be a

good friend, include others during recess and be a good citizen. While Chevalier sang, student volunteers took center stage to sing, reiterate the dance moves and sign the lyrics.

Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or parttime in a horticulture program. In 2018, the Society will offer one scholarship in the amount of $3,000.00. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping

to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. Students interested in applying for these scholarships can find additional information and an application on the LIHS website at www. lihort.org. Applications will be accepted between November 1st, 2017 and March 1st, 2018.

The LIHS meets monthly at Planting Fields Arboretum and offers year-round educational programs, events and tours of gardens here and abroad. Membership is open to all Long Island gardeners whether they are professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or just like to stop and smell the roses.
