I Heart New York I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent
seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

Summer Food Drive Success From June through September 2017, 13 New York State Assembly Members worked together to hold a summer long food drive to help combat the issues of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. “The Summer Food Drive to End Hunger,” coordinated by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, was the first of its kind for the nonprofit, as it involved at least one assembly member at a designated location nearly every weekend for four months during the summer. The elected officials stood outside of supermarkets across Nassau and Suffolk Counties to ask people to donate canned goods and non-perishable items for the regional food bank, operated by Long Island Cares. The total donations were recorded at 20,265 pounds of food, which will
be distributed directly to member agencies of Long Island Cares. William Gonyou, Community Events and Food Drive Manager for Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, said that the coordination of the food drive started well over a year ago. “What made the food drive successful was that all the assemblymen and assemblywomen were vested in it,” Gonyou said. “They showed up. They participated. They believe in the cause and understand the impact of hunger on Long Island.” Approximately 316,000 people on Long Island receive emergency food each year – or 64,900 people every week. Of those, 39 percent are children under 18 years old. “This Summer Food Drive was not only about
collecting food, but also about impressing upon our communities that people who are hungry need food all year long, not just at Thanksgiving time, but also during the summer,” said Paule T. Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “It was a remarkable food drive that brought together elected officials and served as a reminder that hunger is real, and it exists during every season and every week of the year on Long Island.” The following New York State Assembly Members participated in “The Sumer Food Drive:” Brian Curran, Michael Fitzpatrick, Andrew Garbarino, Al Graf, Chad Lupinacci, David McDonough, Tom McKevitt, Melissa Miller, Michael Montesano, Dean Murray, Anthony Palumbo, Ed Ra and Andrew Raia.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time activist
for recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their powerful story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family.

Congratulations to Syosset High School seniors Jarrad Li and Rahul Parthasarathy for being named 2017 semifinalists in the Siemens Foundation Competition for Math, Science & Technology, the nation’s premier science research contest for high school students. Additional congratulations to Rahul, who advanced to the regional finalist round, one of only 11 from Long Island to reach this level. Jarrad conducted research on safe, alternative energy at Stony Brook University, teaming with two other students from nearby high schools. By synthesizing the optimal ratio of gold-silver alloy nanoparticles and coating the fuel cells with these nanoparticles, Jarrad and his team effectively catalyzed carbon monoxide oxidation and increased
fuel cell power output, making them more cost efficient and commercially viable. Rahul worked independently at Brookhaven National Laboratory to identify crystals formed from a compound of cadmium, zinc and tellurium that are most ideal for use as radiation detectors. By analyzing the properties of CZT that affect detector performance Rahul was able to compare the strengths and weaknesses of these crystals. By characterizing the optimum crystals, his research can make detectors more affordable and accessible, opening up a wide range of uses. Possible fields of usage include astrophysics, national security and nuclear medicine. “Rahul and Jarrad are both determined and dedicated young scientists,”
said Syosset High School science research facilitator Veronica Ade, who oversees the school’s participation in the Siemens competition. “They both followed their scientific passions to laboratories which could foster their talents and were able to use those experiences to enter the 2017 Siemens competition.” This year, from about 1,860 projects submitted, 491 students were recognized as semifinalists and 101 as regional finalists. On Nov. 18 Rahul will present his research via videoconference to judges at Carnegie Mellon University, vying for a seat at the national finals at The George Washington University this December, where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top prizes of $100,000.
Hall of Fame Inductees On October 21st, following its high school homecoming festivities, the Bethpage School District held its fifth annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner, sponsored by the Bethpage Educational Foundation. Superintendent of Schools Terrence Clark welcomed guests to celebrate the induction of eight honorees and the 1968-1969 varsity wrestling team. “The Bethpage Educational Foundation did a fantastic job of soliciting community input and determining the final selection of inductees,” said Clark in
his opening remarks. “They could not have chosen more deserving Golden Eagles. We look forward to honoring the highest caliber of Bethpage alumni, teachers, administrators, staff members, coaches and community members in the years to come.” Other speakers included Nassau County Legislators Rose Marie Walker and Laura Schaefer, Bethpage Educational Foundation Secretary James McGlynn, JFK Middle School Principal Kevin Fullerton and Bethpage High School Principal Michael Spence. The Bethpage Educational Foundation has been responsible for

As part of an annual Hicksville Public School District tradition, student representatives from each school expressed their gratitude for the members of the board of education for all of their hard work and dedication throughout the year. With their principals also in attendance at the October meeting, students from each elementary school personally presented each board member with a gift, and students from the middle and high schools expressed their appreciation in speeches. turned a lever to compress the apples and watched the tasty juice form. The program concluded with students sampling the cider and sharing their favorite ways to savor apples, including apple pie, applesauce and apple juice.

Taking Top Prize On Friday, October 27th, LIU Post became Long Island’s biggest shark tank for 78 teams of student entrepreneurs from 55 high schools throughout our region. LIU Post welcomed 1,500 high school students to the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts for the prestigious LIU Entrepreneurship and Leadership Conference in partnership with Virtual Enterprise International. The event allowed Long Island’s top young entrepreneurs to have the opportunity to network with and hear from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs, and participate in informative and exciting breakout sessions. The program also included an Elevator Pitch Contest, where one student representative from each firm gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” to a panel of judges. The event’s Keynote Speaker was Al Kahn, an LIU Post alumnus and member of the University’s Board of Trustees who is a legendary figure in the field of licensing, responsible for bringing such hits as Cabbage Patch Kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Pokemon to the United States. Kahn imparted practical advice to the young entrepreneurs, including: “Love what you do;” “Build on your past successes;” and “Take some risks - and expect
some failures.” The students also heard from LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline and the Dean of LIU Post’s nationallyranked College of Management Dr. Robert Valli. Dr. Cline invoked the name Post, the cereal conglomerate and namesake of the university to illustrate the entrepreneurial history of LIU. She encouraged the students to attend business programs that are accredited. Dean Valli addressed the enthusiastic teenage audience
the whole experience. “Today is the day for intellectual curiosity.” The students then participated in informative and exciting breakout sessions before launching into the Elevator Pitch Contest, where one student representative from each firm gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” to a panel of judges. Nine finalist firms from Centereach, Lindenhurst, Lynbrook, Islip, Plainview/Old Bethpage, Smithtown, Bethpage, Patchogue/Medford, and Ward Melville High Schools were chosen to move to the second round of the “elevator pitch” competition to give their final presentations to the judges and the audience. The team from Patchogue-Medford High School won first place for their conception and presentation of “Evo Tech,” a company that markets “fun” ecoproducts that make life easier. The two runners-up were Plainview/Old Bethpage and Bethpage High Schools. The top three firms were each presented with oversized checks by LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Caring Cafe John F. Kennedy Middle School students in the Bethpage School District raised funds for the Dickinson Independent School District in Dickinson, Texas, by making coffee and hot chocolate for JFK faculty at the “Caring Café.” During their vocational
period, JFK’s Academy Class transformed into baristas as they accepted orders from teachers and staff. Special education teacher Zachary Levy created a Google Form link for staff to request a $1 delicious hot beverage for pickup or delivery. Working off the
spreadsheet, the students created an assembly line, brewing coffee and hot chocolate and customizing the orders with milk and sugar. All proceeds will help the students of Dickinson, who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

This year’s floats included “Spooky Seniors,” “Jailbreak Juniors,” “Space Jam Sophomores” and “Funky Freshmen.” After the parade, attendees were invited to view class skits and a dance routine by the kickline in front of the high school. They could also visit the
high school’s robotics team and varsity baseball team booths in the athletic complex. Under the direction of head coach Erwin Dill, the Golden Eagles were victorious, defeating the Red Devils 28-21. The winning game’s halftime was marked by spectacular performances from the marching band, kickline team and cheerleaders.
