with Jamie Lynn Ryan Leftovers Each year brings with it gains and losses, milestones and mini-markers of life. With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,
Calling All Parents
this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

to Roosevelt Field for some Black Friday shopping. Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School Breakfast Club’s Halloween Bash on October 30th was a monster smash. This Breakfast Club mentors students from the district’s Prep for Life program and participates in fun, exciting activities each Monday. “At the Halloween party, students painted
pumpkins, which were then submitted to the school’s literary pumpkin contest in the library,” said club advisor and teacher Wendy Simpson. “Students also competed in a mummy wrapping. Students were wrapped in toilet paper to look like a mummy.” Senior board advisers Lily Salmeron and Emily Haldas, who have been a part of this club for the past four years, said they were
happy with the turnout. “It’s really great to see so many people come to hang out before and after school,” said Salmeron. “We always have such positive attitudes and that really makes the club special,” added Haldas. This Halloween bash is one of the many events that the club plans to host this year.

Thriving Through The Holidays It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them. You don’t have to use the holidays as an excuse! You can thrive this holiday season and enter 2018 with momentum! You have so many opportunities to make choices that are in line with your goals! Together, we are better. Visit www.jayshealthyvibes.com for healthy recipes, more habits of health - and follow my journey towards optimal health!

Cheliotes. “It was to help guide our students to do such a nice thing.” The color guard of the Nassau County Police Department presented flags to a crowd that included local elected officials and Mary Ann Rand of Bellmore, who lost her son, Adam Rand, on 9/11. During the ceremony, North Bellmore Fire Commissioner Edward Kraus addressed the crowd. He also presented Principal Eric Gomez with a piece of steel from the World Trade Center site.

for a plaque remembering the first responders of 9/11. “Between our relationship with the Kiwanis and our mission to encourage strong community values in the Key Club, this was an ideal project for us to partake in,” said Key Club adviser and school social worker Theana Cheliotes. Many of the club’s members took an interest in fundraising and student Kayleigh Specht took a lead role in procuring the plaque. “I was happy to conduct this presentation and share in the honor,” said

Nice Notes Under the direction of Antoinette Bruno, members of Wantagh Middle School’s Business and Education Serving Together organization took time to show their
appreciation for members of the U.S. military. The students spent the afternoon making cards for veterans, which have been sent to the VA Medical Center in Northport and
distributed to veterans. Ms. Bruno said, “We hope that this small act of recognition for someone’s service will brighten his or her day.”

Hitting a Sweet Spot In less than one week’s time, Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District collected enough Halloween candy to fill an SUV. The school’s Student
Council members, along with advisers Joseph Amador and Lucrezia Colangelo, organized and packaged the loot for delivery to Dr. David Gottesfeld’s dental office in Merrick. The donated candy will be sent to
National French Week
U.S. Army troops serving overseas. “The Merrick Avenue Student Council was the club instrumental in organizing the effort,” said Amador.
Zawislak’s and Denise Schleith’s eighth-grade classes participated in a French competition. Teams France, Belgium, Canada and Haiti competed to show off their French knowledge. Grand Avenue teacher Meredith Levine and Merrick Avenue teachers Lauren Cress and Jennifer
Verwys served as this year’s scorekeepers and judges. “Over the week, students took part in the morning announcements by sharing a French Word of the Day, Fact of the Day, and Question of the Day,” said World Languages Chairperson Renée Fallon.

On November 9th, 15 science classes in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School participated in beta testing of a new augmented reality learning app with the Google Expeditions AR Pioneer Program. A Google representative trained the teachers to use a collection of linked smartphones, which students then held around the room to view virtual objects “floating” in the classroom space. The students observed virtual DNA molecules, planets, stars, landforms, storms and human
anatomical structures. “The problem with using a virtual reality headset is that the kids are in their own worlds,” said science and STEAM Chairperson Rob Soel. “With this device, it fosters collaborative learning and students can network with each other.” By integrating virtual objects with their lessons, the participating teachers were able to enrich lessons and guide students to explore otherwise unseen objects within a class period. At the end of the lessons, students and teachers provided valuable feedback to the Google
representative who will pass along their opinions and ideas to the Expeditions AR development team. “Our science teachers are always looking for new strategies to engage classes and enrich their students’ exploration of the natural world,” added Soel. “Field testing the new Google Expeditions augmented reality app enabled leaning to extend beyond the walls of the classroom. This was another wonderful opportunity for BellmoreMerrick to be on the cutting edge of employing new and innovative instructional technology.”

Sharing Her Story General Douglas MacArthur High School senior Sydney Schneider walked the halls of her former elementary school, Gardiners Avenue Elementary School, on November 3rd, no longer a young student but a published author. Her children’s book, “Chip and Dip” which was recently published on the website Blurb, was created based on a class assignment when she was an eighthgrader at Jonas E. Salk Middle School. Schneider spent the day in library of Gardiners Avenue School to read her book and speak to
third, fourth and fifthgrade students. She discussed her story, her process, inspiration and illustrations. She also shared her original assignment when she first wrote the story “Chip and Dip” and read an entry from her writing journal as a fifth grade student at Gardiners Avenue School. “I hope that the students realize that I was them at one point and they can do whatever they set their minds to like I did,” said Schneider. In addition, Schneider shared her sewing creations with the students. With the help of her mother Danni
Schneider, the two worked together to assemble stuffed characters of the book’s stars, Chip and Dip. Students passed them around the room to see the creations up close. Schneider’s return also prompted excitement from her former teachers who stopped in the library to greet her during the day. At the end of the book sessions, Schneider handed each student a bookmark and signed copies of her book. “I loved the book,” said third-grader Kylie Kazin. “I really loved the rhymes.”

Book Buddies It’s always better reading with a friend, and that is the philosophy in kindergarten classes at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Teachers Mary Cimorelli and Melissa Reime have been encouraging all students to find a partner during reading time. They explained that it is not only
important for children to learn how to read on their own, but to share their excitement about books with others. The teachers taught many strategies that students can use with their partners such as reading silently then having “turn and share” discussions, taking turns reading books to each other, or
reading a book together by alternating pages. Through Reader’s Workshop, classrooms have leveled libraries that are filled with books on a variety of topics so every child can find stories that interest them. Students go “book shopping” and fill up their book bins with items they want to read in school or at home.

Leadership Abilities
High achieving seniors Heather Bonsignore and Brandon Hagen from Levittown Public Schools Division Avenue High School were recently named Wendy’s High School Heisman School Winners. The students will receive a Wendy’s High School Heisman letterman patch and certificate in early 2018. Bonsignore, a varsity
cheerleader and Hagen, a member of the school’s track team were recognized with the honor based on an application that they submitted, showcasing their high academic skills and examples of how they are proven leaders and role models within their school and community. The students are among the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors that
Wendy’s recognizes each year for giving back to their communities, treating people with respect, continuing education and excelling on the athletic field. The district congratulates both Bonsignore and Hagen on this outstanding achievement.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will once again host its vocal music showcase, featuring the five premiere choral groups across the entire district. Included in the performance will be the John F. Kennedy High School Variety Choir, Merrick Avenue Middle School’s Word of Mouth, Grand Avenue Middle School’s Grand Voices, Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Pirate Radio and Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Crescendo.
The evening will conclude with a combined finale in which students from the elementary component districts will be invited to sing with the upperclassmen. “We are so excited to once again provide the unique opportunity for our choral students to come together and showcase their work collectively, both for each other and the members of the Bellmore-Merrick communities,” said Cheryl Fontana, district director of
the fine and performing arts. “Events like this truly reflect the ‘One Voice, One Message’ theme that resonates throughout our district.” The live event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 29th, at 7 p.m., at Calhoun High School, 1786 State St., Merrick. While admission is free and open to the public, students will be collecting donations for the new BMCHSD Food Pantry, the Community Cupboard.

Shattering the Record Under the direction of Michael Bastone, members of the Levittown Public Schools Division Avenue High School competitive marching band recently finished off their season by performing in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University for the 44th annual New York State Field Band Conference Championships. The band earned fifth place in the Small School 2 category with a score of 82.35. This was the highest score ever recorded by Division
Avenue High School at a championship show. The band performed their show entitled “The Twilight Zone,” which portrayed the story of a two traveling musicians, Paul Giorlando and Isabel Jaime, who find their way to a hotel to spend the night. They soon find out that this is no ordinary hotel and have traveled to another dimension. The music was arranged from the original series “The Twilight Zone” and was the common melodic theme
throughout the show. Bastone, along with the rest of the marching band staff extends their congratulations to all who were involved for their dedication and perseverance. “Without the leadership of our students, staff and the support from our parents and administration none of this would be possible,” said Bastone. “It was a remarkable season and we look forward to next year. Eyes with Pride!”

Patch of Learning As part of their unit on fall, kindergarten students at Northside School recently went pumpkin picking in their very own pumpkin patch in the school’s courtyard.
The students participated in a fall festival unit of science where they learned about the season, apples and pumpkins. The courtyard area contained a seasonal display of tall
cornstalks, colorful mums and a large bale of hay. Small pumpkins were set in the grassy courtyard where each student had the opportunity to pick a pumpkin to take home.
Cards and Sweets Blue Star Mothers of America’s Chapter 12 visited Mandalay Elementary School students in the Wantagh School District, who have been collecting Halloween candy and writing cards for veterans serving abroad. Patricia DelBello and Andrea Nordquest visited the school to personally thank members of the student council and adviser Angela Morgan for taking time to make the
lives of military personnel deployed abroad a bit sweeter. In commemoration of Veterans Day, student council members hosted the candy drive and students throughout the school crafted decorative cards with patriotic symbols and messages of thanks to the men and women protecting the nation’s freedoms. While visiting with the Blue Star Mothers,
the students learned the symbolism behind the organization’s banner, which hangs on a house window to indicate that a family member has been deployed. “When you pass a house in Wantagh and see a banner in the window, you will know that someone from that family is protecting this nation,” Ms. DelBello said.

Long Island Champs
It’s thrice as nice for this squad. Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy boys varsity volleyball team defeated Hauppauge High School on November 11th, clinching the Long Island Class B title. “This is really an
exceptional group of student athletes,” said coach Dennis Ringel. “They are senior-led, have great depth and truly love to play the sport.” They defeated Bethpage High School in straight sets on November 9th to secure the 2017 Nassau County
Volleyball Championship. This is Kennedy’s third straight Nassau County Championship and their eighth in 10 years. They move onto the New York State Championship, which will be held November 18th.

Celebrating Heroes In keeping with the Bellmore School District’s character education program, Shore Road students showed their respect to U.S. veterans by writing letters to those who have served and now reside in the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Library media specialist Mary Willis explained to the students that writing letters to veterans is extremely important to her, because she has visited
her father in a veterans home and has seen some residents who have no one to write to or visit. “Honoring and writing letters to veterans is one of the most important things we can do each year,” Ms. Willis said. The students also read and discussed the symbolism behind “America’s White Table” by Margot Theis Raven, a book about holding a place setting for service members who have fallen,
went missing or have been held captive in the line of duty. A replica of “America’s White Table” also stood in the school’s main lobby to honor lost veterans. Fifth-grade students in Jody Leibowitz’s class also received a visit from Vietnam veteran Dr. Cappelli, who shared some of his experiences during the war and the importance of celebrating veterans on November 11th.

One Brick at a Time An ongoing fundraiser at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in the Bellmore School District is the mortar needed to rebuild Caribbean schools that have been damaged by devastating storms this past hurricane season. The school’s student advisory council is hosting a fundraiser called One
Brick at a Time, sponsored by All Hands Volunteers, a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering disaster relief volunteers throughout the world. Students were encouraged to color in a paper brick sent home by the school and to return it with a donation of $1 or more. As the bricks are collected, they are placed
on the hallway wall like bricks on a building for all to see. Norwegian Cruise Line, a company on a mission to rebuild schools, is matching each donation. Principal Patricia Castine said, “Our students can feel proud that they are making a difference by helping other children get back to school.”

Hurricane Helpers
Fifth-graders at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District raised more than $1,500 for MedShare through their “Hurricane Helpers” fundraiser to help those affected by the recent hurricanes. According to its website, MedShare is a nonprofit humanitarian aid organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of people, communities and the planet by sourcing and directly delivering
surplus medical supplies and equipment to communities in need around the world. Throughout the month of October, the fifth-graders asked students, staff and administrators to make a monetary donation and to color in paper cutouts of Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. The school’s Kiwanis Kids club collected the donations and cutouts from each classroom and pasted the images on large paper hearts that were
displayed in the hallway outside the main office. The grand total of $1,514.90 will assist MedShare in distributing medical supplies and basic care items to those affected by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Bowling Green’s fifthgrade class would like to thank all families, students and faculty members who helped make this fundraiser a huge success.
Walking to a Healthy Life In honor of Red Ribbon Week, George McVey Elementary School students, teachers and community members in the East Meadow School District gathered to promote healthy lifestyles by walking through the community. Among the attendees were New York State Sen. Kemp Hannon, Town of Hempstead
Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad, District 17 New York Assemblyman Tom McKevitt, and District 13 Legislator and Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves, all of whom greeted community members and students during the walk. Prior to the walk, the school’s mascot, Mighty Mind, high-fived students, while members of the band
performed and classes gathered with banners and wellness signs outside the school. Classes created wellness signs to emphasize their commitment to making healthy choices. A few of the signs included such sayings as, “Say No to Drugs,” “McVey Is a Happy School” and “We Are Drug and Bully Free.”
