Merrick Avenue Middle School English teacher Michael Dlugozima and Wellington C. Mepham High School English teacher Erica Wagner have been recognized as New York State English Council Educators of Excellence. “Mr. Dlugozima has taught seventhand eighth-grade English honors, regulars, and collaborative classes for 29 years in the Central High School District,” said Board Member Wendy Garguilo as she recognized him at the Nov. 1 meeting. “He is a pioneer of 21stcentruy teaching and

learning and is always the first to experiment with and implement new strategies, techniques and technologies in the classroom. He is known for teaching in a virtually paperless environment and often engages his students in lessons by flipping his classroom, utilizing Google Apps, and maintaining an interactive teacher website and blog. He is the driving force behind the creation of the new inquiry-based research class titled “RISE” (Research-Based Independent Student Centered Explorations).” Dlugozima has also

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Board of Education was treated to praise and presents at the November 1st meeting as the district celebrated School Board Recognition Month. Grand Voice, led by director Amanda Cantwell, sang “Give Us Hope” before Sanford H. Calhoun High School art teacher Heather Lohr and her students presented sections of a collaborative painting project to each member. Determining Density Winthrop Avenue School third-graders in the Bellmore School District used the scientific method to determine the density of a combined concoction of three fluids – water, oil and syrup – during a science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activity. After making predictions and writing a hypothesis about what would happen first when water and oil were combined and then syrup

was added, the students drew pictures and wrote observations about the results. Teacher Stacey Reiner noted that the lesson falls in line with the district‘s STEAM initiative, which provides additional opportunities for handson science activities. An important goal of the lesson, she noted, is the students’ ability to follow instructions during experiments, skills they

will need in middle school and high school. Teacher Deana Genovesi told the students, “It is important that you follow the sequence to receive the correct outcome.” When the students had completed their experiments, they wrote questions and observations on Post-it notes, placing them onto a poster board for peers to read.

Calhoun high schools then performed in a live concert alongside Wood later that same evening at the Brookside building. “This event marks the first time in our district that all orchestra students in grades 7-12 came together in performance; all while raising money for our Community Cupboard,” said District Director of Fine & Performing Arts Cheryl Fontana. “It is our ‘One Voice, One Message’ initiative at its finest.” The concert was open to the public and raised more than $1,100 for the district’s food pantry.

Abominable Academy

Once again, students from the ENL program and the International Buddy Club at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District transformed their classroom into a walkthrough haunted house, spooking up some fun for the school and funds for their program. Students and staff members paid a nominal fee to enter the Abominable

Academy, a dark room packed with spooky sights and costumed characters, resembling a haunted school. The International Buddy Club and their co-advisers, Heather Glick and Katrina Mae Angeles, planned the event. The students in the ENL program worked during free periods and after school to complete this transformation. They selected how they could assist based on

their abilities: make-up, costume and set design, acting, music and/or lighting. “It is amazing to see students working so hard to create an experience that rivals commercial haunted houses,” said ENL Chairperson Enrique Montes. “There are so many different aspects behind the planning of this event.”

On October 24th, the Family Project hosted their first Halloween Party at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District. The Family Project is a program that brings together students and their classmates with developmental disabilities to engage in social interactions, recreation and independent living skills with the support of the school community. Supervisors Lauren

Beinert and Barbara Green helped to organize the event with the help of staff members Eduardo Martinez, Nicole Levesque, Samantha Novak, Lisa Marino, Anna Weidlein and Lisa Santorufo. Family Project planned weeks in advance for the event with the entire group of students helping to create all of the decorations, banners and the photo-booth frame. Mrs. Santorufo also assisted students in making chocolate covered

lollipops to hand out as favors at the party. “We had the pleasure of DJ Zinke (Mr. Zinke from Merrick Avenue) who was nice enough to DJ the big event,” said Emily Paluseo, assistant director of special education and pupil personnel services. “The students had a blast and felt a great deal of pride seeing all of the work they had contributed come together in the cafeteria that night.”

Children’s educator, entertainer and Simon Sez master Steve Max recently rocked the house at Chatterton School in Merrick. This dynamic, interactive assembly focused on the importance of listening and of being

respectful to others, as well as to ourselves. Max also encouraged students to make healthy choices for themselves and be positive role models for others. The assembly was made possible by the Chatterton PTA Cultural Arts Committee and is

one of several programs sponsored by the PTA throughout the year. Max is also known for his popular NBA halftime shows, but his program proved to be a slam dunk Chatterton students and staff alike!

Unity in the Community In observance of Unity Day on October 25th, which is held during National Bullying Prevention Month, numerous lessons and group activities were conducted at Levy Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick to promote teamwork, tolerance and togetherness. Spearheaded by school social worker Lori Schneider in coordination with the district’s character education program, Lions Quest, special lessons were designed to teach students to stand together against bullying and demonstrate kind behavior in their daily lives. Students formed

Unity Chains during recess periods, and student leaders volunteered to come to school early to scribe warm, welcoming messages of kindness on the walkway to the front entrance of the school for their classmates to take notice. The school’s signature Unity Day project entailed every Lakeside classroom collaborating on a Unity Day poster. Each class poster will be displayed as part of a large mural that is being created in the spirit of the school’s Unity Day theme, “Every Piece Counts at Lakeside.” Additionally, lessons on

making healthy choices and wise decisions were woven into the week’s work as part of the school’s annual observance of Red Ribbon Week, which teaches young students about the dangers of drug use. Many Levy Lakeside students also donned orange attire – orange is the official color of Unity Day – to take a visual stance against bullying. Whether it was collaborative posters, peaceful gestures and written messages or simply students behaving benevolently, Unity Day was a huge success!

Wantagh High School’s college-level Virtual Enterprises International class attended LIU Post’s Virtual Enterprises International Business and Entrepreneurship Leadership Conference held on October 27th and attended by more than 1,500 students from across Long Island. The annual conference enables VEI students to network with and hear from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs in business, fashion, branding and entrepreneurship. Under the direction of VEI

teacher Nancy O’Connor, the high school’s VEI students attended workshops in accounting/ finance, sales/marketing and human resources. The Wantagh School District implemented the VEI program during the 2016-2017 school year, which allows students to develop a virtual business from concept to implementation. The class is a real work environment in which the students assume business responsibilities based on their backgrounds and interests and the

classroom simulates the atmosphere of a company. As employees of a virtual business, students are held accountable for the company’s performance. They conduct market research, develop a business plan, design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(K) plans and draft an annual report. In addition, students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms from school districts locally, nationally and internationally.

Setting the Tone Winthrop Avenue School choral students celebrated the season with a Fall/ Halloween concert to the delight of parents and peers, held in the school auditorium on October 30th. Under the direction of teacher Maria Pisciotta, the well-rehearsed fourth-grade choral group, accompanied by musicians on recorders

and xylophones, sang “America,” “Scarin’ Alive,” “Magic Brooms,” “Halloween Night,” “Ghost of John” and “Little Shop of Horrors,” all of which set the tone for the impending Halloween festivities. The concert commenced with the singing of the Winthrop Avenue song. In between each selection, the students recited poetry to reflect the fall

Fifteen exceptional orchestra students from Levittown Public Schools were recently selected to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association’s Nassau intermediate and secondary festivals. Students selected to perform on the intermediate level include Jonas E. Salk Middle School students Anastasia Angelakis, Eunice Lee and Evelyn Sun. Sharing Safety Tips Four firefighters, who all have children in the second grade at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, visited on October 30th to give a fire safety lesson. North Bellmore Fire Department Commissioner Ed Kraus, along with

Fire Department of New York members Lt. John McCormack, Joe Chiodi and Mike Pugliese, gave two presentations for students, as October was National Fire Prevention Month. They put on their full gear in front of the children to show them that firefighters are their friends. A few

lucky teachers also got to try on the equipment. Students learned the importance of having smoke detectors in their homes. The firefighters acted out a mock rescue and also asked student volunteers to demonstrate stop, drop and roll.

were sold. “All proceeds from this year’s Flag Field of Honor will benefit Boots on the Ground New York, a local organization dedicated to helping America’s veterans and current service men and women,” added teacher and coordinator Chris Patten. Shape-o-Lanterns

Students at Meadowbrook Elementary School in the East Meadow School District celebrated the Halloween season in their classrooms with creative projects that reinforced their math and writing skills. First-graders in Eileen Cohen’s class got into the spirit by constructing jack-o’-lanterns out of paper. After drawing ribs on their paper pumpkins,

they attached the eyes, nose and mouth. Inside the mouth, they glued 10 teeth and wrote “10” on the pumpkin’s stem. Collaboration was at the heart of another lesson between kindergartners and fifth-graders, who teamed up to make “shape-o’-lanterns.” The older students got things started by cutting out large orange circles as the base for their pumpkins, along

with a variety of geometric shapes to use as features. Determining which shapes represented the eyes, nose and mouth, the kindergartners glued them onto their pumpkins. With help from their fifth-grade buddies, they counted the number of shapes they had used and wrote the sum at the bottom of their projects.

Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

ONE NORTH: More Than Just a Grand Opening One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island. The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

Positive Decisions As part of the Levittown School District’s Levittown Educators Against Destructive Decisions Week, Lee Road Elementary School students heard from Joey Branford and Stephan Cerra of the Flowstyle BMX Trick Team on October 25th. Sponsored by the school’s PTA, the professional BMX riders hosted two assemblies in the school’s gymnasium to speak to students about

important topics such as staying safe, healthy habits, anti-bullying and goal setting. They also showcased various BMX tricks that they learned over the years, while stressing to students not to try them at home. Cerra spoke about his career and his daily fitness routines to the students. He encouraged healthy eating and working out each day. During the assembly, student volunteers were

selected to show off their jump ropping abilities as their peers cheered them on. Afterwards, Cerra attempted to match their jumps on his bike. At the end of the program, both Cerra and Branford handed out postcards and posters to students who could name the tricks that were featured during the assembly. Taking the LEADD The Levittown community gathered together on October 29th for the Levittown School District’s annual Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Family Walk and Fair at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Although the rain brought the festivities inside, the gymnasium was filled administrators, faculty, students and families who visited booths from a variety of community, student and parent organizations and clubs. The district hosts the event each year as a culmination to the educational programs and activities taking place during the week in each building. Students tackled healthy lifestyle choices and making positive

decisions. During the event, students and their families were encouraged to wear their best Halloween costumes for a costume contest. The gymnasium was full of participants wearing their most creative attire. At the start of the festivities, Father Ralph Sommer was announced as grand marshal, while two student marshals were named as well. Division Avenue High School student Alisha Sharma and MacArthur High School student Erin Cassano were selected as marshals for embodying a positive role model and leader in their schools and in the community. “The big point of LEADD and why it’s so important is to really unite the school district

and the community,” said Assistant Director of Special Education Jordan Margolis. “Today we have a tremendous amount of community support. The point of LEADD is to bring awareness to prevention to making positive decisions and I think the link between the schools and the community is really important in that process.” Students and their families walked around the gymnasium to play games, create crafts, mingle with fellow community members and more. Due to the weather, an indoor parade took place where students in their costumes had the opportunity to show off their looks. The student marshals judged the costumes and awarded first, second and third place winners.

annual project. Ms. Karaiskos said the message really hit home for the students. “This project offered an opportunity for students to read about and hear stories of what it is like to serve this country,” she said.
