Schneider worked throughout the summer to create book on Blurb, bringing her creativity to life with her drawings.

General Douglas MacArthur High School senior Sydney Schneider recently turned her middle school English project into a published children’s book, creating the storyline and
at Jonas E. Salk Middle School, Schneider was challenged to create an original book with the theme of epiphany as part of an English project in Nara Denson’s class. When she turned in the assignment, Denson was impressed and encouraged Schneider to get the book published. “She has an incredible, natural talent,” said Denson. “Hearing about what she did with this assignment affirmed my career choice as a teacher.” “I think it’s incredible,” added Principal Joseph Sheehan. “The time and energy that she put into this book speaks volumes about Sydney’s character.” Once the book was

Kids’ Clinic Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Wellington C. Mepham varsity kickline team hosted their fourth annual dance clinic for local children. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade were shimmying and shaking on October 21st, along with some assistance from members of the Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools’ kickline teams. “After learning technique, the varsity kickline team taught a team performance style routine to their group members which was then performed by the kids for their parents at the conclusion of the clinic,” said Mepham kickline coach Kerry Dennis. “It was a great morning for the Bellmore-Merrick community.” The team will hold a Winter Dance Clinic on Saturday, December 16th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Brookside gym. Registration will open on November 6th.

I Heart New York I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent
seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

Levittown Students Commended During the October 18th Board of Education meeting, the Levittown School District trustees and administrators publicly commended high school and middle school students for their academic achievements and philanthropic pursuits. Division Avenue High School students Khushi Desai and Jack Stanley and MacArthur High School students Yingyue “Maggie” Liu and Kristen Papach were congratulated
for having been named Commended Students in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. MacArthur High School students Jared Schwartz and Helen Zhang were recognized as National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists and Zhang was also congratulated for being named a 2017 Siemens Competition Semifinalist. In addition, Wisdom Lane Middle School Principal John Avena
recognized students Annina Saccomano and Nabiha Khan with the Pay It Forward Award. Prior to the opening of the first day of school, the girls spread kindness by sticking more that 250 inspirational quotes and messages on the lockers of their peers, a gesture that was appreciated by students and faculty and which will become an annual school tradition.

action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” LICADD offers a special thank you to co-Chairs, Claudia Ragni and Nancy Beckett for organizing the Breakfast. Funds raised will go to further LICADD’s 61-year
mission of offering support and assistance those who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. LICADD’s promise is to never to turn anyone away due to inability to pay for services. LICADD’s focus is to help the individual get well. This event is named after Father Peter Sweisgood, a

Fifth grade students throughout the Levittown School District read the book “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library” by Chris Grabenstein during the summer months and recently worked on a culminating project to show what they had learned. Classes participated in creative lessons and activities about the story when they returned to school. Virtual Reality Fifth-graders at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School received a visit from representatives of the education learning platform, zSpace on October 20th. The platform gives students the opportunity to explore and participate in experimental learning through computers with augmented and virtual reality capabilities. Students had the opportunity to engage in learning applications using 3D glasses. Lisa Grippo, zSpace regional director, helped the students navigate the technology
as they used the computer screens to explore different worlds and accomplish tasks. They worked with their peers to problem solve by moving around with a stylus. At the conclusion of the class session, many students responded to the virtual reality learning experience as “awesome.”
M e a d o w b r o o k Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District used Ozobots to complete a measurement challenge during their science, technology, engineering and mathematics class. The Ozobot is a one-
inch-tall robot that uses photosensory perception to recognize patterns, lights, colors and codes to perform a programmed task. STEM teacher Kimberly Wagner guided thirdgraders in an activity where they designed routes

Day of the Dead In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, students at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District engaged in a cultural experience with a Day of the Dead activity on October. 23rd. “They learned about the significance of this celebration in Mexican culture,” said world
languages department chairperson Rosa Kaplan. “Students then had the opportunity to paint and take home canvases with sugar skulls, a traditional symbol of the Day of the Dead.” Key to My Art studio in Amityville led the step-bystep art instruction and Spanish teacher, Danielle McNeil organized the event.
This event was offered by Mepham’s ELITE (Enriching Learners in Tomorrow’s Education) after-school program, which is financially supported by the Mepham Alumni Association. The ELITE Program aims to engage and inspire students by providing after-school enrichment opportunities.
Rolling to Safety Barnum Woods Elementary School students learned about keeping their families and homes safe during this year’s fire prevention program, “Protect Your Family from Fire.”
East Meadow firefighters educated K-5 students about the uniforms and duties of firefighters and the importance of establishing a central location for family members to meet in case a fire happens.
Following the assembly, students were able to view and ask questions about fire trucks, fire engines and ambulances. Kindergartners at Birch and Levy Lakeside elementary schools in Merrick are receiving some early hands-on lessons in engineering, combining the knowledge they are learning in the classroom with their own inventiveness. Students in Denise
Kvint’s and Loretta Vernet’s classes at Birch School and Christine LaMarca’s class at Levy Lakeside worked collaboratively within their classrooms to design and build structures that provide shade from the sun. They used basic materials such as cardboard, paper, paper towel rolls and

Woodland Middle School sixth-graders in the East Meadow School District learned about creating a positive and bully-free school environment by participating in Rachel’s Challenge. After the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School, Rachel’s Challenge was established to inspire and equip every person to create a permanent, positive change in their school through assemblies, team building exercises
and the acceptance of others. Sixth-graders began their day with an assembly about Rachel’s story of spreading kindness, dreaming big and starting a chain reaction of positive change. At the conclusion of the assembly, students were asked to complete five challenges during the school year: look for the best in others, dream big, choose positive influences, speak with kindness and start your own chain
reaction. Rounding out the day, East Meadow High School students visited sixth-grade classrooms to conduct lessons about the six pillars of character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The middle school students were also asked to acknowledge the positive people in their lives and consider the impact a single compliment can have on someone.

True Colors Students throughout the Wantagh School District wore orange-colored clothing on October 25th to celebrate Unity Day, a national program to raise awareness of the harmful effects of bullying and to encourage students
to unite for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Members of the Miss Wantagh Committee, who sponsored the high school’s event urged peers to sign their names to stomp out bullying and to create an atmosphere free
of judgment and criticism. At Mandalay Elementary School, students wrote messages of kindness and pledges against bullying on orange Post-it notes and placed them on a decorated bulletin board for peers to read.

October 25th. The halls were decked and the classrooms were transformed into crafting stations as visitors made their way around the building. In the C.H.A.M.P. kitchen, culinary arts students prepped cake pops
for decorating and assisted with gooey icing and sprinkle accouterments. From spider crafts and pumpkin decorating to walking on a makeshift yellow brick road to Oz, the high schoolers were eager to please the little ones.

Fifth-graders at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District took their reading to the next level when they built life-size models of robots. The students read “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown as part of the Global Read Aloud, an international literacy initiative. They split into
teams and created large robots using cardboard boxes, aluminum foil and other supplies. Some groups had their creatures light up, while others added moving parts. Students had to base their robots off of descriptions found in the book. For example, one group placed the robot’s head on a turntable
because the robot in the story can turn its head completely around. “It made the book more exciting and brought the literature to life,” said fifth-grade teacher Jill Drum. “Each team came up with their own spin on it and their robots were very creative.”

Storytelling Comes to Life
Kindergarten through second-grade students at Northside and Summit Lane elementary schools in the Levittown School District received a visit from children’s book author David Ira Rottenberg and the Eglevsky Ballet on October 19th. Rottenberg and the Eglevsky Ballet visited Northside students in the morning and Summit Lane
in the afternoon to share Rottenberg’s children’s book “Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig.” Rottenberg narrated while members of the Eglevsky Ballet performed an interpretation of the story. This was the first time that the Ballet Company worked with Rottenberg. Under the guidance of Eglevsky Ballet teacher and choreographer,
Melissa Bartucci, the two collaborated to bring the story to life and allow many of the young students to see a ballet for the first time. After the performance, Rottenberg and the dancers answered questions that the students had. These included hearing about how the dancers got their start and Rottenberg’s writing career.
