to families in Jamaica, West Indies who cannot afford health care, she traveled there to lend nursing expertise and to live the CHS mission to “advocate for the poor and underserved.” Jordan lives in Hempstead with her husband, Denroy Morris. The other leading finalist for this notable honor is New Hyde Park resident Mary Ellen Conrad, director of the Nassau Day Programs and Supported Housing, from Maryhaven Center of Hope, Port Jefferson. For more than 30 years, she has been a proponent of the CHS mission, developing, implementing and sustaining one of the largest mental health service delivery systems in Nassau County. Her career began when there was little funding to operate programs, so she had to creatively staff and run with both quality and efficiency. Having identified a need for residences for those with a mental health diagnosis as well as an intellectual or developmental disability, she presented the idea to administration. When the facilities needed to meet the individual’s changing needs, she secured more than $750,000 in funding to renovate each of the homes, resulting in handicapaccessible homes for 30 individuals and another 31 individuals in supported housing beds in the community. Today, these programs continue to be fully operational and are highly regarded by Nassau County and New York state.

Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership. This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Richard C. Bie, licensed professional engineer and assistant vice president, plant engineering for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip. Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, he was recognized at the system’s 11th annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. “Richard’s commitment to Catholic Health Service’s mission is apparent in both word and deed,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Alan D. Guerci, MD. “He is dedicated to assuring that those who seek care are provided the best possible environment.” Bie has spent the better part of his career applying his unique skills and talents to the health care industry, including the last five years with Good Samaritan. There, he implemented energy efficiency processes throughout the hospital such as operational changes to shut off equipment during unoccupied hours, a house-wide steam trap maintenance and repair program, expansion of a central chilled water distribution system, and replacement of older lighting within the main hospital and off-sites with newer, more efficient LED lighting. Also, he collaborates with others throughout the facility in planning for and addressing complex challenges to improve results, leading to significant cost savings, simpler processes and quicker response times.

County officials encouraged veterans affected by PTSD to enroll in their local PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Project support groups. “There is no greater obligation we have than to make sure the men and women of our armed forces have the support and services they require when they come back home,” said County

Commencement Celebration Stony Brook University held its 17th Annual December commencement ceremony today in the newly renovated Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where 1,571 students had their degrees conferred. The new graduates, which range in age from 20–77, joined approximately 150,000 of their predecessors around the globe whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission. During his commencement address, Stony Brook University President Samuel L.
Stanley Jr., M.D., spoke about the tradition of graduation, the increasing value of a Stony Brook degree, and reinforced the competitive advantages and opportunities that Stony Brook graduates will have as they enter new chapters in their lives. “Recently some have questioned the value of a college degree, have stated that a college education may not be worth its cost. Let me make it very clear. Your investment in your Stony Brook degree will be one of the best investments you (and your family) ever
made,” said President Stanley. “In addition to earning higher wages,” he continued, “college graduates are more likely to find jobs than those who didn’t attend college. Your decision to attend and receive a degree from Stony Brook University means you are on a path towards a better life, and I congratulate you on that choice and your future.” President Stanley also encouraged students to keep in touch with mentors and professors who helped graduates achieve

Go see what’s beyond this wave of life, and howl to the world ‘I am a Seawolf!’ … Stony Brook gave us our sea, and now

Dwyer Project where they share their experiences with fellow veterans and allow the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Project to veteran households
throughout the County. “Suffolk is home to the largest veteran population in the State of New York, the second largest in the United States, and we need to ensure that they are taken care of each and everyday,” said Congressman-elect Lee Zeldin. “We know that holiday time is often the hardest time of the year for families who lost their sons or daughters. The stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you don’t come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold prevention tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold. • Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change
into fresh outfits. Such precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house. • Go outdoors and get some fresh air. It’s a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Don’t be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. • Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and
making it more capable of fending off colds. • Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. • Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he
or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business. • Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and make them more vulnerable to infection. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Viruses are especially good at entering the body through the mucus
membranes located in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent handwashing and avoiding touching your face can keep colds at bay. • Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost the body’s immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact negatively with other medications. • Recognize that

Pomegranate has antiinflammatory properties, which can help in reducing joint pain and preventing strokes. Pomegranate may also help the body fight viruses. • Cinnamon: Cinnamon has high levels of antioxidants, and some studies point to cinnamon as a natural antibacterial agent. Cinnamon also can help regulate bloodglucose levels, which is beneficial for those with
diabetes. • Prunes: Now widely referred to as “dried plums,” prunes are an important source of boron, which could prevent osteoporosis. High in antioxidants, prunes help the body fight a variety of illnesses. • Cabbage: Cabbage may be a key element in the fight against cancer. Cabbage has phytochemicals that can protect the body against cancer-causing free radicals. It’s also a good source of dietary fiber, which can stimulate a sluggish digestive system. • Butternut Squash: This food is packed with carotenoids, which are
stellar antioxidants. The starches in this squash also have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties.
• Chestnuts: Chestnuts have high levels of protein. are worthy of inclusion They’re also packed with in anyone’s diet. Unlike vitamin C and B vitamins. many nuts, chestnuts are relatively low in fat but

There’s no need to visit a doctor for a cold unless you have a fever after several days of being sick. Colds normally last between seven and 10 days. If your symptoms do not improve or if they seem to be worsening, visit your doctor.

Everything Old Is New Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So did everyone get what you wanted for Christmas this year? Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’
worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a flat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift
that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. Auld Lang Syne Origins New Year’s Eve festivities peak when the official countdown of the clock begins. After the ball drops and midnight has arrived, revelers cheer to the new year and exchange kisses and well wishes. Once such wishes have been exchanged, many people begin to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” But few know what “Auld Lang Syne” means or why it is sung on New Year’s Eve. Confusion regarding this song is almost as notable as the tradition of singing it. Many people mumble through the lyrics because they never bothered to learn them. “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish composition that is well over 200 years old. Written by Robert Burns in the 1700s, the author never intended for the song to become a staple of the holiday season. It was originally a poem that was
later put to the tune of a traditional folk song. The title translates roughly in English as “old long since,” or “long, long ago.” The song pays homage to times gone by and past experiences. The song has been performed at group jamborees, funerals and other special occasions all over the world, but it is best known for its affiliation with New Year’s festivities. The man behind that affiliation may be Canadian musician Guy Lombardo, whose band used “Auld Lang Syne” as a bridge between two radio programs during a live New Year’s Eve performance in 1929. Coincidentally, the song was played directly after the clock struck midnight, laying the groundwork for a New Year’s Eve tradition. Now “Auld Lang Syne” has forever been
tied to well-intentioned resolutions and sappy slaps on the back. Despite selling millions of records, Lombardo became more famous for his New Year’s Eve song than anything else. Confusion over “Auld Lang Syne” remains to this day. It has been the butt of jokes in popular culture, even earning a nod in the movie “When Harry Met Sally.” Harry laments to Sally that he never quite understood what the song meant and ponders whether it is about forgetting about friends or remembering them. Sally sums it up by saying the song is simply about old friends. That is the interpretation many New Year’s Eve celebrants embrace as they toast to the new year and sing their hearts out.

The Key To Keeping Resolutions New Year’s resolutions provide a perfect opportunity to set positive goals for the year to come. Old habits can be hard to break, which can make it difficult for men and women to stay committed to their New Year’s resolutions. But a new year marks a new chapter, and the following are some ways you can ensure this year’s resolutions don’t go unresolved. • Be specific. A resolution that’s too general may ultimately prove ineffective. For example, if you resolve to lose weight this year, you probably hope to lose a substantial amount of weight over the next 12 months, as opposed to just one or two pounds. If you set specific and periodic goals, such as lose one to two pounds by the end of January, as part of your resolution, then you are building in some measuring sticks along the way, and meeting those measuring sticks can motivate you to stay
on course and realize your resolution by year’s end. • Don’t go overboard. If you traditionally find resolutions hard to live up to, then stick to a single resolution this year. This allows you to focus your efforts more effectively and ensures you won’t be overburdened, which could negatively impact your ability to realize your resolutions. • Use technology. Saving more money is a popular New Year’s resolution, and now men and women looking to save more can employ technology to help them realize their financial goals. If your goal for the coming year is to save ‘X’ amount of dollars, sit down and calculate how much you need to save each pay period to realize that goal. You can then have that figure automatically deposited into an interestbearing savings account each time your paycheck is deposited into your account. • Enlist a friend. If your
New Year’s resolution is one that others can apply to their own lives, then by all means enlist a friend. For example, men and women who want to find more time to exercise in the coming year can enlist a friend or family member to exercise with them. The buddy system is a great motivating tool, and enlisting the help of a friend or family member provides the added benefit of seeing that loved one more often in the year ahead. • Don’t let setbacks derail your resolution. Resolutions too often fall by the wayside when men and women experience setbacks directly related to their resolutions. If you resolved to save more money but had a month when that simply was not possible, don’t allow that to derail your resolution for the rest of the year. Setbacks are nearly inevitable, but they’re never an excuse to give up on a resolution.

Traditions Of Three Kings Day Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on December 26th or even January 2nd. For many people, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are merely a prelude to the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Day, or Día de los Très Reyes, is celebrated on January 6th to honor the wise men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany, the holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians. Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail from the “east” and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. They begin a journey to bring gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn
king. Unbeknownst to many, the popular song “The 12 Days of Christmas” actually marks the 12 days following Christmas, ending on the Feast of the Epiphany, and not the 12 days preceding Christmas Day. Many traditions are associated with the Epiphany. Celebrants in Mexico serve Rosca de Reyes, an oval-shaped cake that symbolizes a crown. The cake has a small doll inside that represents baby Jesus and the hiding of Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Herod ordered his soldiers to seek out and murder all male infants born in Bethlehem in retaliation of the prophecy that a messiah would come and become the new King of Jerusalem. Times Square Traditions Thousands of people congregate in Times Square every year to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. Millions more around the world watch the event on television. This world famous tradition dates back to 1904, when the New York Times relocated to what was then known as Longacre Square. The paper convinced the city to rename the area in its honor, and the area was soon deemed “Times Square.” At the end of his newspaper’s first year in its new location, Times owner Adolph Ochs held a large bash, complete with fireworks and other festivities.
The party became a yearend tradition. But a few years later, fireworks were banned by city officials, so the Times had to come up with another spectacle for its party. They hired Jacob Starr to build a wood-and-iron ball that weighed 700 pounds and was illuminated with 100 25-watt light bulbs. Sign maker Artkraft Strauss was responsible for lowering the ball, which slowly descended from a special flagpole at midnight on New Year’s Eve, marking the beginning of the balldropping tradition. The Times Square illuminated ball was lowered almost every year since then, except
in observance of wartime blackouts in 1942 and 1943. This iconic New Year’s symbol has been redesigned seven times through the years. The ball is now 12 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 12,000 pounds - about the same as four compact cars combined. The ball is covered in 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles that vary in size and is illuminated by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs. The Times Square ball is capable of producing a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns and now stands as a permanent fixture atop One Times Square.
