HOLIDAY SONGS - North Bellmore 6th grade students, joined by their vocal music teacher Emilie D’Andrilli, perform holiday songs in the main lobby of the Nassau University Medical Center for employees, patients and visitors.
Levittown sophomores Philip Downes from Division Avenue High School and Erin Cassano from MacArthur High School have been selected to represent the district at the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar held at Adelphi University from June 10th-12th. The students were chosen through a rigorous selection process comprised of a nomination, essay and interview and for having embodied core HOBY values including volunteerism, integrity, excellence, diversity and community partnership. Philip plays football for the Blue Dragons and swims for Levittown and St. Bernard’s CYO team. He is actively involved in the DAHS Chamber Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the yearly school musical. He sings with
the St. Bernard’s Youth Choir and performs at the Cultural Arts Playhouse. Philip serves the greater Levittown community through the Youth Ministry at St. Bernard’s, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Long Island and as a Senior Patrol Leader in the Boy Scouts of America. Erin plays the trombone in both the MacArthur High School Marching Band and band. In addition to her involvement in Mathletes and Math Fair, Erin is a member of the spring and winter track teams. She is also a Girl Scout and is currently working on the design of a raised flowerbed garden to complete her Gold Award requirements. Erin volunteers with the Key Club and recently joined the efforts to eradicate breast cancer during the Jones Beach Breast Cancer
Walk. During the HOBY State Leadership Program, Philip and Erin will participate in hands-on leadership skills, meet state leaders and learn to make a positive impact in their community.

A second concert took place at the Broadway Mall in Hicksville for parents, friends and family as well as the numerous holiday shoppers and mall employees who stopped to listen. The performance featured an impressive clarinet solo played by James May and the inclusion of four MacArthur Band alumni Caitlyn Derrick (Class of 2014) and Nicole Jannetti (Class of 2014) on clarinet and Megan Bastos (Class of 2007) and Karen Fitzgerald (Class of 2001) on flute. On December 23rd, the Winter Wind Ensemble closed out the season with another special holiday tradition, the serenading of students, faculty and staff with mini-concerts through the halls of schools in between classes.

My First Christmas
‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about. I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…
appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude! Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting! My human has promised me
Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go. No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades. All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle! Thanks again to all my readers – your support and fan mail means the world to my little finned self. Happy New Year… I’ll see ya on the flip side!
District Art Show In the East Meadow School District, students were recognized for their artistic talents at the District Art Show. During the art show, members of the W. Tresper High School String Quartet performed while students, faculty and family members viewed the artwork. These students, first through 12th-grade, were selected for their tremendous work and creativity in papiermâché, painting, drawing and photography.

Sweet Moment The scent of candy, graham crackers and icing wafted through the air of Angela Coogan’s first-grade classroom at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center as students and their parents crafted gingerbread houses in celebration of the holidays.
During a weeklong unit, the class studied the ways in which holidays were celebrated at home and around the globe, including Mexico, Sweden, Israel and Germany. Making gingerbread was a culminating activity for the students’ exploration of the German holiday
celebration. Starting with a milk carton, the students built the walls of their houses with graham crackers. After spreading icing on the roof and walls, they added colorful candies and gooey marshmallow treats to create a holiday decoration to be remembered.

District Ambassadors
In mid-December, student ambassadors representing the four high schools, for the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District’s One Voice One Message initiative, traveled to the United Nations in New York City. Accompanied by Dr. Mara Bollettieri, Mr.
Eric Gomez, Mrs. Robyn Einbinder and Dr. Joseph Netto, students took part in a guided tour of the U.N. The trip was made possible through a grant provided by the Community Parent Center, which is led by Wendy Tepfer. Matthew Levine, a Meadowbrook Alternative Program
sophomore, expressed his sincerest gratitude and reported that he “really enjoyed the entire day.” Students and staff saw many parallels between the district’s mission and those of the ambassadors at the UN. Like the diplomats who represent the interests of their countries while
working together to help other nations and to solve world issues, ambassadors have been working with their peers from all six buildings to share the best of their schools while performing community service and addressing issues that affect all of the students within the district and beyond. Mepham junior, Hope Kotowski said, “It was very interesting to learn how the world’s nations come together to collaboratively make decisions.” While at the United Nations, students visited the General Assembly gallery, the Trusteeship Council room and the Security Council room. Students viewed the magnificent works of
art donated by member nations and learned about the humanitarian efforts spear-headed by the United Nations. Not only was the trip fun, it was educational and inspiring. Sara Samir, a senior at Calhoun, echoed this notion by describing the trip as “invaluable.” The magnitude of this experience was felt by all and was captured by Mepham junior, Chris Rosenthal. “It [United Nations] may not be the biggest building in New York but it dwarfs the others nonetheless,” he said. Ambassadors also learned about the United Nations’ efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, and to provide good health and
well-being and quality education across the globe. These goals coincide with the district-wide MLK Day of Service during which the students of the BMCHSD will package school supplies as well as warm winter clothing for the homeless and those in need in the local and neighboring communities. “The trip to the UN was quite humbling. Standing in the rooms where great men and women made historic decisions is something that I will never forget,” said Jared Del Orfano, a Calhoun senior and student ambassador. Community Coat Drive announcements over the loudspeaker and posted reminders on social media. “We collected 96 coats and sweatshirts,” he said. This is the 12th coat drive that the assemblyman’s office has hosted to benefit various human services’ organizations on Long Island.
“Each year it gets bigger and bigger,” Assemblyman McDonough said. The assemblyman presented the officers with a certification of recognition for their efforts.

sketched a winter or holiday picture and submitted it to the venue. The art was then carved into lighted wooden sculptures. Elizabeth’s sketch featured a hot chocolate mug held by a mitten, while Anna’s sketch was of a lanky Christmas character. In addition, Jon’s sketch featured Santa exiting a chimney.
Art teacher Athanasia Karaiskos said she encouraged the students to participate in this famous local show. “I wanted them to see that art is connected to every aspect of our lives,” she said. “The art department could not be more proud of the students.”

BE MORE POSITIVE, HAPPY, HEALTHY & SMART That is what you will learn by reading, Positivity! Unlike other books regarding happiness, this book builds a foundation on being smarter, obtaining the skills necessary toward gainful employment and managing money successfully. How can a person be happy if they do not have a good job, cannot give a good speech and cannot invest wisely? In the highly competitive world in which we live, a foundation must be built that makes people happy and healthy. The foundation starts with positive thinking and a healthy lifestyle but it should be coupled with continuing education and prowess in accumulating and managing money. This answers the question, how can a person be happy in today’s world. “Reading Positivity is a game changer for every reader. The unique wisdom and philosophy of life that Harry Edelson shares proves that life can be easy and joyful for everyone. Imagine a world if seven billion people lived by Positivity! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. Harry Edelson has figured out true keys to a good life – which is the one common denominator everyone wants. And I know, because I’ve interviewed over 400 of the top CEOs, and I see a lot of wisdom and very successful people…and Harry has truly figured it out. What a gift you offer in this book.” ROBERT REISS, HOST & CEO, THE CEO SHOW “As Benjamin Franklin said: ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ The wisdom in Harry Edelson’s book is like finding a great investment. It continues to grow in value and will pay dividends throughout your life. This is the same philosophy that the brilliant investor, George Soros, has advocated through his Open Society Foundations where I served as a Trustee for many years” JOHN W. ALLEN, INT’L INVESTMENT BANKER AND CHAIRMAN OF GREATER CHINA CORP “The interesting thing about Harry Edelson is that he is usually the smartest guy in the room and what is amazing, the happiest guy in the room. His book tells it all and can be easily absorbed by adults and students alike.” ELIZABETH KABLER, TRUSTEE, ANNENBERG FOUNDATION TRUST AT SUNNYLANDS, FOUNDER, NY CENTER FOR LIVING

Food Drive Success Various departments at Merrick Avenue Middle School (MAMS) collaborated to run a successful food drive during the holiday season. Under the supervision of teacher Mrs. Weissman, and Builders Club advisors Mr. Amador and Ms. Colangelo, the students and staff of MAMS donated canned and non-perishable food items.
The MAMS food donations were coupled with Calhoun High School’s Key Club Food Drive to be distributed to the community through the local Kiwanis Club. Mrs. Fuschetto’s class created colorful posters to advertise the food drive. Mrs. Beber’s home and career classes baked apple muffins that were then sold to help raise money.
“This money was then combined with generous donations of the MAMS faculty and staff in order to provide gift cards to our families in need,” said Principal Taryn Johnson.” This tremendous endeavor could not have been accomplished without the support and unity of the entire MAMS school community.”

Amanda Kowalski’s first-grade students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore took a proverbial trip around the globe to study how different countries celebrate the holiday season. During the weeklong lesson, the students learned about St. Lucia Day (Sweden),
Christmas (Mexico), Hanukkah (Israel) and Kwanzaa (Kenya and the United States). On December 17th, the students traveled to stations and worked with parents to create a holiday craft that represented each holiday tradition, including a Kwanzaa mat, poinsettias, a candle
wreath and a menorah. They also decorated a construction paper suitcase with symbols from the various holiday celebrations to symbolize their trip around the world and to hold their crafts. “The students learned that family is a large part of each tradition,” Ms. Kowalski said.

Blankets for the Homeless Since the beginning of the school year, students in Participation in Government and Senior Experience at Mepham High School have generated more than $7,000 as a part of their service learning efforts for Tuesday’s Children. Through a variety of projects and events, students have given back to the families of 9/11 and to those currently serving or who have served in post-9/11
military operations. Most recently, the Participation in Government and Senior Experience classes completed the creation of blankets for homeless veterans as part of their service learning efforts for Tuesday’s Children. The blankets will be sent to the Health Care for Homeless Veterans program at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. The program serves veterans who are homeless and
have a medical, mental health or substance use disorder. This program provides outreach, crisis intervention and case management services, as well as housing and vocational services. A transitional residence will open in the near future for veterans who have previously resided in city shelters. Each blanket will have an iron label stating that the blanket was handmade by Tuesday’s Children.
Holiday Cheer for Vets Several weeks prior to the holiday season, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s English Chairperson Mary Donnelly reached out to her department for students to create handmade cards for veterans residing at the Northport VA Medical Center. An employee of the
center had reached out via social media and Donnelly organized a district-wide effort. “I was touched by the man’s plea, and I thought I would share his idea with the department in case anyone was interested in helping out with their classes,” Donnelly said. “I offered to take care of the
postage to ensure that the letters and cards arrive in time.” More than 200 cards flooded in from Grand Avenue Middle School alone and were added to a mounting pile they already received from the other schools in the district. “We have 1,000 all together,” Donnelly said.

MAP Gift Wrap Students and staff at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program recently stayed after school to assist the Bellmore Lions Club with wrapping more than 600 toys collected for an upcoming holiday party for
homeless children. The Bellmore Lions Club hosted a holiday party in mid-December for several hundred homeless children that currently reside in shelters throughout Nassau County. Each
school in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District organized a toy collection and the items were brought to MAP for wrapping and labeling.
In early December, 14 students from John F. Kennedy High School who are interested in pursuing a health-related career visited North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital and spent the day at their division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. “The students worked with pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pulmonary therapists, human
resource administration and management who kindly devoted their entire day to working with the students,” said science teacher Barbi Frank. “Each professional described their role in the pulmonary team illustrating all of the facets that contribute to successful health care for the community.” Students were able to participate in hands-on activities including EKG’s, blood pressure exams,
ear exams and various pulmonary function tests, including spiometry, lung volume measurement and diffusion capacity measurement. “The students truly had an amazing day and are looking forward to representing the pulmonary division at the SPARK Challenge Student Conference Career Fair in April,” said Frank.

Essay Winner Salk Middle School student Sean Napoli was one of four island wide winners in the Bring a Duck to School Contest sponsored by the Long Island Ducks Organization and TD Bank. During a school assembly, Sean was honored for his essay written about his hero, Anthony Napoli, who he
described as a U.S. Navy veteran, cancer survivor and reliable family member. In addition, Long Island Ducks mascot Quaker Jack made an appearance. “Heroes make great sacrifices and inspire us to be better people,” sixthgrade English language arts teacher Caroline Kind told the students. “It is important that all of
you recognize the heroic qualities possessed by many people in our very own community.” Sean was also awarded a TD gift card and his grandfather was presented with a R.I.S.E. (respect, integrity, sympathy and empathy) award for his service to his country and family.
Graphics Training In Bill Cooper’s Graphic Arts class at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center in Levittown, students are learning to make their creativity marketable. During the two-year graphic arts program, students learn printing, art and graphic communication with an emphasis on creativity and critical thinking. These are important skills that are needed to generate technologically appropriate, functional and aesthetically pleasing graphic design. “Graphic design is not so traditional anymore,” Mr. Cooper said. “I ask the students to walk into a grocery store, walk down the aisle and try to find something without an image on it.”
In addition to textbook learning and assignments to reinforce concepts, the class is set up to teach students real-life career skills. Students punch a time clock to promote a “work mentality,” and anything with an image is studied. Students design and print more than 100,000 district envelopes each year, which are personalized for each department office. The high school yearbook is assigned as a senior project and students design and print each of the high schools’ graduation programs, art show posters, district handbooks and playbooks for drama productions. Mr. Cooper explained that the favorite part of the program, however, is use
of the industry-standard embroidery machine, utilized to design and embroider t-shirts and logos, projects the students can put their name on. A number of students already work in the industry through the district’s Work Based Learning program. Instead of attending class fulltime, the student works part-time in the industry. There are also field trips and guest speakers that afford students career and postsecondary opportunities in the traditional print and design fields. “We assign projects to reinforce the design process, idea to delivery, from the start,” Mr. Cooper said.

National Basketball Association agent David Falk visited MacArthur High School business students enrolled in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Trial Law, Business Ownership and Marketing, and Introduction to Business classes to discuss his life as a sports agent, entrepreneur and lawyer. During his presentation, Mr. Falk discussed the marketing of Michael Jordan and other high profile clients, as well as the development of the Air Jordan brand. He also shared stories about his NBA clients and discussed
how his experiences with the NBA helped shape his career. Mr. Falk also gave the students advice for gaining internships and presenting oneself to prospective clients and employers. Mr. Falk is a 1968 MacArthur graduate who has represented 14 basketball Hall of Fame players and coaches, written “The Bald Truth” and served as executive producer of the movie “Space Jam.” He is the owner of the sports agency FAME and established the David B. Falk Center for Sports Management at Syracuse University.
MacArthur High School Assistant Principal Anne Rao explained that Falk gave the students a perspective of what a student, who currently sits in their seats and classrooms, can achieve and first-hand accounts of experiences of well known NBA players in all facets of the business world. “This was an incredible opportunity for the students in the business department to witness how concepts they learn about each day are applied in real life,” Ms. Rao said.

A Time for Giving
JAZZ CHOIR PERFORMS - The East Meadow High School Jazz Choir, along with music teacher, performed holiday songs for the staff of the Nassau University Medical Center, patients and visitors on Thursday, December 17th in the main lobby on the first floor at NUMC. The music teachers have been bringing students to perform at NUMC for over twenty years, helping to bring a little cheer to patients, their families, staff and visitors.
In the East Meadow School District, the Meadowbrook Elementary School is getting into the giving spirit by donating to various causes this holiday season. In the beginning of December, Meadowbrook planted a Giving Tree in the main lobby for faculty, teachers and students to purchase a gift to give to children of the community. The Giving Tree is decorated with ornaments that contain
gift suggestions from local families. After the gifts are purchased, teachers wrap the presents and deliver them to children of the community. Continuing with the Meadowbrook giving spirit, the school decided to host a towel drive where students, faculty, teachers and administration donated new towels to Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. The INN serves the homeless community on Long Island providing
them with food, shelter, long-term housing and supportive services. The school’s goal was to donate 1,600 towels. In addition, Meadowbrook ran a Toys for Tots drive with the help of Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt and the United States Marine Corps. Members of the Meadowbrook community were encouraged to contribute gifts and toys to bring joy to children this holiday season.
