Becoming Authors As part of an art enrichment project, second-graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District created their own illustrated books. Art teacher Amy Lopez and the second-grade teachers worked together to create the project, which combined art and literacy. Students studied books by children’s author and illustrator Gail Gibbons to serves as models for their own works. The secondgraders then had to create a nonfiction piece either about their family, their favorite sport or a holiday. Many children shared a personal experience related to one of

Division Avenue High School senior Dylan Chase, was recently selected as the recipient of the Rensselaer Medal Award for excellence in mathematics and science. He will receive a $25,000 per year merit scholarship if he decides to enroll at the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Rensselaer Medal has been presented to distinguished students each year to recognize their superlative academic achievement and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering and technology. Chase is currently enrolled in AP Economics,

AP Calculus BC, AP Physics II, and AP Literature/Composition. He is also a member of Division Avenue’s football and wrestling teams, Key Club, Robotics Club, Peer Leaders, Mathletes, Math Honor Society, World Language Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowﬂake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Buddy Clubs Members of the International Buddy Club from Sanford H. Calhoun High School joined members of the International Buddy Club at Merrick Avenue Middle School, both in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, on December 8th to celebrate

the holidays and make gingerbread houses to bring cheer to those in need. Students from various nations, ages and backgrounds spent a funfilled cultural afternoon creating gingerbread houses that were donated to children at the Nassau

Engineering Homes University Medical Center. “This event gave students the opportunity to celebrate while giving back to the community during this holiday season,” said world languages chairperson Enrique Montes.

Instead of the smell of wood from two by fours, there was the sweet waft of confections in Stacey Sandurs’ kindergarten classroom at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh as students engineered and decorated gingerbread houses with loved ones. Ms. Sandurs explained that during the month of

December, students read and compared various gingerbread man stories to Laura Murray’s “The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School.” They participated in a story map/sequencing activity where they compared and contrasted the beginning, middle and end of each tale to other versions of the same story.

As a culminating activity, the students used clues to search throughout the school for the missing gingerbread man and then joined parents, babysitters and grandparents to engineer their own gingerbread house, using milk cartons, icing and various confections to celebrate the holiday season.

Dreidels & Latkes Mandalay Elementary School first-graders in the Wantagh School District adopted Hebrew vocabulary words and customs to their holiday traditions while participating in Hanukkah activities. After Wantagh teacher

Stacey Vespe read to the class Eric A. Kimmel’s “The Magic Dreidels,” the students learned to play the dreidel game and the meaning behind the words nun (nothing), gimel (everything), hey (half) and shin (put in). They

also played a Hanukkah bingo and math game, made a latke craft and searched for eight hidden presents embedded within a Hanukkah celebration picture.

a good boat is watertight (with no holes), and possesses tall sides and a wide bottom with a sail tall enough and sturdy enough to catch the wind. Once completed, they set sail, testing their boats in water for buoyancy and experiencing much success!

A Mindful Lifestyle in the Mindful Schools Year-Long Certification Program. She has also participated in silent retreats, completed several courses in Mindfulness Meditation and the eightweek Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program. The Mindfulness Parent Workshops, which Anderson will facilitate through March 2018, covers a variety of different topics on how to live in the present moment. Previous sessions included practicing mindfulness meditation and mindful eating. The program has been a success, with over 50 family members participating in the meditation workshop. The next parent workshop, “Mindfulness & ADHD” will be held at Lee Road on January 17th at 7 p.m. “Research has shown that a significant predictor of students’ future success is their ability to selfcontrol,” said Anderson. “It trumps any kind of social-economics status or even academic ability. Being aware in the present moment is a great way for them to learn how to bring self-awareness to everyday experiences and turn reactions into responses.”

Third and fourth-grade students in Lee Road Elementary School’s new Mindfulness Club gathered on the morning of Dec. 8 to learn the importance of mindful eating. Under the guidance of teacher Melanie Anderson, the students discussed the importance of mindfulness or the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment. Through the Mindfulness Club, students learn how to channel their emotions and observe their feelings. They also practice breathing techniques, discuss what being mindful does to an individual’s brain and find healthy ways to manage stress. During the meeting, Anderson read the book “No Ordinary Apple: A Story About

Eating Mindfully” by Sara Marlowe. Following the book, each student was given an apple and for ten minutes, learned that slowly eating and connecting with their food makes a difference. Using their senses, the students discussed how it felt to not eat the apple quickly and reflected on living in the moment. “Next time I’m going to do this because I also have an apple for snack,” said third-grader Kristos Kovoros. This is the second year that mindfulness has been embraced at Lee Road. New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. I want to work out more and focus on specific areas, as opposed to going to the gym and struggling to work out comfortably in order to burn calories to lose a few pounds. A Mindful Mood Grand Avenue Middle School has been piloting mindfulness and relaxation sessions for students on a voluntary basis throughout the school day. “During these sessions, the students practice relaxation methods to assist in the reduction of stressful thoughts

and feelings,” explained organizer Dr. Maura Kempton, chairperson of special education at Grand Avenue. Weekly sessions are being held during the final 20 minutes of lunch periods. The program will continue indefinitely. “The response to the

program has been very positive and attendance has been strong,” said organizer and school psychologist Dr. Marla Bayles. “Middle school is a stressful time and the students really benefit from taking a break to focus on their physical and mental well-being.”

Spreading Warmth Student council members at East Broadway Elementary School recently hosted their annual winter coat drive to give back to those in need this holiday season. During the course of two and a half weeks, a total of 11 garbage bags full of coats were donated. The donations were brought to Division Avenue High School to

help with Division’s own coat drive to support Keep New York Warm. The fourth and fifth grade students placed donation boxes throughout East Broadway where in addition to new or gently used winter coats, the students collected sweatshirts, hats, gloves and scarves. “The student council

members were really excited to be a part of Division Avenue’s coat drive,” said student council advisor Jennifer Nadolny. “They made posters to hang up around the school as well as announcements to help remind and encourage the East Broadway community to bring in their coats to support those in need.”

Dreaming of Kindness Center and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The project was organized by first-grade teacher Debbie Edgerly, who said that the dream catchers would give children some peace while they are away from home and undergoing treatment. It followed an assembly earlier this year by Richard Specht, a character building motivational

speaker. Newbridge Road students made their dream catcher frames using Popsicle sticks, then added strings with colorful beads. Teachers assisted as they wore their “Choose Kind” T-shirts. “Our children are learning compassion and kindness,” Ms. Edgerly said. “This is something that they can do to make other people feel happy.”

Seventh-grade students at Jonas E. Salk Middle School in Michele Witte’s class recently decided to pay it forward by selling colorful teddy bears as part of the school’s movement, Tyler’s Teddies, after a 10-month-old named Tyler died due to a defective juvenile product. Students sold bears during lunch periods to benefit Kids In Danger, an organization dedicated to improving child safety products. The students read the book “Pay it Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde during the summer and encouraged their fellow peers to buy a teddy bear, which they sold for $3 each, to give to someone else this holiday season as

part of the Pay it Forward movement. Many students participated by purchasing multiple bears to give to friends and family. “We’re trying to get as much awareness as we can,” said seventh-grader Cassidy Steiner. “We have social media accounts, including an Instagram and an email if anyone needs to contact us. We’re doing really well so far.” “It feels great to be giving back because it is near the holidays so there’s a lot of joy going around,” added seventh-grader Vanessa Monnielo. “It’s about giving teddies and making people feel happy.” To showcase how many students paid it forward, the class plans on having

students who contributed to the cause to fill out a paper bear after the holidays and have each student write how they passed it on. The bears will be displayed in the school. Students who contributed also were encouraged to wear pajamas on Dec. 19. “We have really been focusing this year on the concept of paying it forward,” said Witte. “I’m hoping that the students are able to realize that in giving, especially around the holiday season, they can really pay it forward to their community and families and understand the meaning of what the holidays are all about.”

The Wantagh School District designated Dec. 4-8 as Business Education Week to enrich the business education curriculum with workshops and lectures from college professors and business professionals, thus assisting students to effectively prepare for a purposeful and meaningful career. “Business Education Week provides insight into authentic, real-world topics which connect the classroom to the business world, all in an endeavor to better prepare our students for college and beyond,” said Pat Calosso, supervisor of business education and foreign language. The week commenced with Virtual Enterprises International students

giving presentations on their virtual companies to the district’s Business Advisory Board, which included higher education representatives and local business professionals. Future Business Leaders of America officers also informed the board of the meetings and competitions attended this fall. College level Business Law students also listened to several court cases at the Nassau County Courthouse, courtesy of the Honorable Scott Fairgrieve. In addition, the business department held its first Mini Career Café, which hosted speakers SAVVY Hires CEO Felicia Fleitman, MindYolk CEO and Long Island Visual Professionals founder Paul

Meaningful Careers Lipsky, Protiviti Forensic Managing Director and Global Lead Scott Moritz and perfumer Victoria Collette. The speakers discussed graphic design, law, forensics, accounting and entrepreneurship. Eighth-grade E-Business students participated in coding workshops at the Coder School in Syosset and the Microsoft Store at Walt Whitman Mall, while fashion marketing students visited Macy’s at Herald Square. In addition, the College Level Introduction to Business classes attended an East Meets West presentation by Adelphi University students from Saudi Arabia and Professor Gupta.

The Polar Express Assistant Principal Jessica Zimmer punched each student’s ticket as they took a proverbial ride with their teachers throughout the school’s hallways while dressed in snuggly pajamas. After reading the popular tale about an old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole for Santa’s departure on

this annual sleigh ride, the students settled down to literary and art activities, including the crafting of construction paper hot chocolate cups and trains as well as sequencing and sentence structure exercises. The special activities culminated with a warm cup of hot chocolate and cookies to celebrate the holiday season.
