As you are reading this, I have already found out my first college decision. Hopefully, I was accepted. Unfortunately, the odds are not in my favor. As a college that accepts a fraction of its applicants, my dream school is certainly not a guaranteed acceptance for me. As you can already tell, I am not willing to divulge the name, as I am afraid to jinx myself. As much as I want to attend that school, the ball is in their court. Early last year, I developed my love for the college. Hopefully, this love is not platonic. I sent in my application over two months ago, on my birthday. I have been

stressing out over their decision ever since. As I am writing this, mile marker zero is less than eighteen and a half hours away. Next week, you will be hearing if I made it in or not. It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

mind that this school is right for me. If only the admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. The first line of that letter will read either “congratulations” or “unfortunately.” Preferably, it will be the former, but everything happens for a reason. I will be content wherever I end up attending, even though I will never be able to shake that possible feeling of rejection. Stay tuned...

As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

East Meadow High School students provided a series of memorable musical performances during their winter concert on December 16th. The program drew praise from parents, faculty and administrators and featured a variety of musical tunes performed by the ninth-grade band, symphonic orchestra, mixed chorus and chamber orchestra. The ninth-grade band, directed by Joel Levy, started the night with a powerful musical set

Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

Commerce Plaza Visit Fifth-grade students from Gardiners Avenue visited Commerce Plaza, a hands-on educational program that introduces children to the business community through a simulated work

environment. In preparation for the field trip, classes completed a unit of study on economics, with activities ranging from check writing and balancing a checkbook to examining a

business’s profit and loss. During the trip, students were given jobs to carry out throughout the day and worked with their coworkers to run a successful business.

COMMERCE PLAZA VISIT - Gardiners Avenue Elementary School student SPREADING CHEER THROUGH MUSIC - In time for the winter holidays, and as Jacquelyn Romeo spent a day at Commerce Plaza with other Levittown students. a special treat to the students, select members of the fourth-grade band and orchestra at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School did their best to spread a little holiday cheer through music. With their instruments in tow, the students caroled throughout the building playing Jingle Bells, Ode To Joy and The Dreidel Song, among other tunes. A total of 51 W.T. Clarke High School students in the East Meadow School District were honored on December 16th at the school’s Math and Science National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Parents, friends and faculty were on hand at the special ceremony held in the school’s auditorium, where 23 students were inducted into the Math National Honor Society, 12 students were inducted into the Science National

The Division Avenue PTSA sponsored its annual book fair at Barnes and Noble bookstore, with a portion of each book purchase put toward senior scholarships. The day was highlighted by performances from the chamber orchestra and

Honor Society, and 16 students were inducted into both societies. Science National Honor Society adviser Janet Nickel-Evola offered opening remarks and Math National Honor Society co-adviser Tara Koebel welcomed attendees to the event. Officers from both national honor societies, including Math National Honor Society President Siddesh Ramesh and Science National Honor

Society President Ganesh Ravichandran, discussed their respective societies, explained the history behind them, and spoke about where they anticipate the groups are heading in the future. Continuing their mission of giving back to the local community, students and staff at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School collected hundreds of new and unwrapped toys and games throughout December. After the collection, students donated the items to the United States

Marines Toys for Tots program. According to the Toys for Tots website, “The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.”

“By participating in programs such as Toys for Tots, our students learn that there are people less fortunate and they need to be a part in helping the community,” said Principal Sally Curto. “Something as small as a toy can go a long way for a family that may not be able to afford one themselves.”

HOLIDAY OF GIVING - NuHealth/NUMC participates in “Holiday of Giving” event in Hempstead. NuHealth staff was invited to present information about health services to the community, such as bariatric surgery, diabetes, dental, ophthalmology, psychiatry, maternal-fetal health, and our Family Health Centers. They also conducted blood pressure screenings, and promoted their injury prevention program.

Gingerbread Adventure

The sweet scent of icing, candies and graham crackers permeated the air of Joan Margolis and Dawn Minuto’s kindergarten classroom at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown School District as students worked diligently with their parents and teachers to decorate gingerbread houses. The event was a culminating activity for the students, who have been studying the legend of the gingerbread baby throughout various cultures. Ms. Margolis read Jan Brett’s “Gingerbread Baby” and compared the popular tale to others,

including those from the Ukraine, Germany and Hawaii. “The students actually preferred the American versions because the gingerbread baby was always kept at the end of the story,” Ms. Margolis explained. “The American versions seemed like more of an adventure.” Kindergartners at East Broadway Elementary School also decorated gingerbread houses, much like those seen in the pictures of books by Karen Schmidt and Eric Suben, both called “The Gingerbread Man.” Prior to their craft activity,

the students read about gingerbread houses and the gingerbread baby on a Smart Board, discussing similarities and differences between the literature samples. They also incorporated their study about adjectives to create gingerbread coloring books, identifying and linking a color word to the appropriate body part. While the students enjoyed the rich sample of books about gingerbread houses and babies, their favorite part of the unit was decorating their own GOVERNMENT LECTURE - Assemblyman Dave McDonough recently spoke gingerbread houses with with students in the third grade class at Mandalay Elementary School in Wantagh. frosting and candy. Dressed in their pajamas, kindergarten students at Wantagh Elementary School celebrated Polar Express Day. Serving as the train conductor, Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg stamped each student’s ticket to start a “journey” to each of the kindergarten classrooms, where the young students participated in activities similar to those in the popular tale by Chris Van Allsburg. His experiences lead him on a journey of self-discovery and help to re-establish his belief in Santa. After reading The Polar Express with their homeroom teachers, the students rotated through each of the four kindergarten classrooms, where a related activity took place. The kindergartners made reindeer hats, papier-mache candy canes, construction paper hot chocolate mugs decorated with real marshmallows,

and graham cracker and sugarplum trains, all symbolic of the experiences in the book. Teacher Patty Magoloff explained that the activities had a strong English language arts component and furthered the students’ abilities to follow directions. “The kindergarten team has a deep desire to develop strong literacy in the young minds that we teach,” she said. “Polar Express Day is about celebrating a cherished book, developing a love of reading, and having lots of fun completing related projects.”

Clarke Concert

W.T. Clarke Middle School students dazzled friends, family and faculty with a wide range of musical talent during the first part of their winter concert on December 4th. Enthusiastic and talented studentmusicians from the jazz ensemble, chamber singers, sixth-grade orchestra, seventh-grade orchestra, eighth-grade chorus and eighth-grade band performed a variety of musical numbers. The jazz ensemble, directed by Kevin Scully, started the evening with their musical set, which

included “Bad Attitude” by Michael Sweeney. The chamber singers, directed by Dawn Waters and accompanied by Alan Waters, performed several songs, including festive versions of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser and “Beboppin Santa Claus” by Kirby Shaw. The sixth-grade orchestra, directed by Kelly Gelfer, performed an exciting mix of musical numbers, including “March of the Bowmen” by John Caponegro. The seventh-grade orchestra, also directed by Ms. Gelfer, performed an eclectic set

of tunes, including “Tales of the Kojiki” by Keiko Yamada. Directed by Dawn Waters and accompanied by Alan Waters, the eighthgrade chorus performed passionate versions of “Believe” by Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri and “Sing a Song” by Maurice White and Al McKay. The eighth-grade band, directed by Mr. Scully, concluded the program with a traditional version of Chanukah: The Festival of Lights Overture, Brad Ciechomski’s A Call for Peace and Roland Barrett’s Arabian Dances.
