Programs offer in-depth experience and teach the hands-on skills needed to be successful in the food service industry. Classes cover local and national health codes, basic knife skills, equipment maintenance, preparing of restaurant-style food, baking, dessert preparation, and training for the ServStaf and Nassau County Board of Health exams. Courses are taught by award-winning, state-certified chefs and culinary professionals. The Culinary Institute is a seven-month program, beginning in January 2015 and running four nights a week. once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very ﬁrst holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reﬂect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Levittown’s Northside School community participated in the annual John Thieissen Foundation toy collection and collected more than 800 new games and toys for distribution to children in local hospitals.

Organized by the PTA, students chose wooden soldier ornaments naming a gift from the school’s Giving Tree located in the school’s lobby. The toy drive coincided with the school’s focus on the

December character trait of generosity and those who participated were happy to bring joy and support to hospitalized children.

Dazzling Production The East Meadow High School Theatre Guild presented three mesmerizing performances of its production, Bard In A Box: The Taming Of The Shrew, from December 11th-13th. The comedy was directed by Amanda Priole. While stranded in an abandoned hunting cabin during a raging

thunderstorm, a class of intrepid students search for ways to amuse themselves while they wait for bus repairs. Stranded with no cell service and nothing to do but complain, the students stumble upon “The Bard in a Box: The Taming of the Shrew in 60 minutes or less!” The students ransack the house for props before

attempting to stage their own rollicking version of one of Shakespeare’s classic comedies. The student cast impressed audiences with their exceptional performances, and the productions were well attended and drew rave reviews from members of the community and school district.

Celebration Of Heritage Levittown students at Northside Elementary School celebrated their heritage on December 12th by dressing in costumes that represented their native and cultural backgrounds. T h e activity was sponsored by the student council, who voted on Heritage Day as

one of the school’s spirit days, in addition to Pajama Day and Sports Jersey Day. The fifth grade expanded on this theme by conducting research. They assembled “culture kits” – boxes containing information and relics from their countries of ethnic origin. They also

made posters featuring the history, geography, customs, traditions, flags, religions and government of each country studied. In addition, they had an opportunity to taste delicious foods from various cultures, brought to the classrooms by parents and students.

Putting their knowledge of the English language to use, fourth-graders at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School participated in the school’s annual spelling bee on December 10th. To qualify for the spelling bee, the 14 participants first had to compete in inclass bees. Following their

in-class wins the students then spent a few weeks learning the rules of the bee and practicing their spelling. After weeks of preparation, the students took to the stage in front of their classmates, teachers, administrators, and parents to compete for the honor of being named the fourth-grade spelling bee

champion. Following a back and forth of more than 15 minutes of spelling between the final two contestants, William Fischetti was named winner after correctly spelling the words sensitive and furniture. Antonino Scimeca was named the runner-up.

Flagpole Installation Administrators, students, staff and members of VFW Post 1711 joined New York State Sen. Kemp Hannon on the front lawn of the Levittown Memorial Education Center to dedicate the district’s first new flagpole in a commemorative ceremony on December 8th. “This flagpole is a symbol of the Levittown community and what this nation has fought for,” Sen. Hannon said as the American flag was raised.

A legislative grant of $75,000 provided by Hannon will allow the district to replace flagpoles at each of the schools by the end of the 2014-2015 school year, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald said. During the ceremony, high school student council presidents Audre Gale (MacArthur) and Christina Reilly (Division Avenue) and middle school student council officers Gabrielle Gately (Salk, vice president), Alice Johnson
