Helping Little Ones In the East Meadow School District, Barnum Woods Elementary School’s student council presented March of Dimes with a check for $650 to support their campaign for healthier babies. During the last week
of October, members of the fourth- and fifthgrade student council informed classes about the campaign and explained that all proceeds from their pumpkin fundraiser would help premature babies have a fighting
chance for survival. For one dollar, students, faculty and administrators purchased a pumpkin and wrote a small message on it. The pumpkins were then displayed around the building.

During the December 9th public meeting of the Levittown Board of Education, trustee James Moran was unanimously elected to the position of
vice president. This office was left vacant by former vice president Kevin Regan, who passed away earlier this school year.

TOYS DONATED - As they have during each holiday season for the last four decades, East Meadow Fire Department volunteers took a brief time out from their heroic duties to don a different kind of superhero suit. Jolly old Santa himself and his elves delivered toys to each child on NUMC Pediatrics and spread a little holiday cheer. The volunteer firefighters brought at least one toy per child, hoping to brighten the day for children suffering from various illnesses. The volunteer firefighters were joined by NUMC officials.

Fresh Start Program Continued From 8 people, including more than 200 families in Suffolk County - primarily single mothers and children - each night in shelters and emergency apartments. While social workers and housing specialists do their best,
families face the bleak prospect of spending the joyous holiday season alone with strangers. Finding an affordable, permanent home takes an average of four months. Since most people are in emergency housing due to eviction or foreclosure, they often have very little
to their names. While counties provide the bare essentials - beds, a dining table, a couch the gift cards will allow the families to buy linens, blankets, pillows and housewares that turn a house or apartment into a home.

After reading Chris Van Allsburg’s popular tale “The Polar Express,” about an old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole for Santa’s departure on his annual sleigh ride, the students settled down to literary and math activities, including the crafting of hot
chocolate cups and trains out of construction paper, a word search, and sentence structure exercises. The special morning culminated with a warm cup of hot chocolate and cookies to celebrate the season.

In the Merrick School District, Birch Elementary School students Skyped with author Josh Funk discussing his book, “Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast.”
Prior to the Skype call, students of Linda Ronayne’s and Mindy Seltzberg’s class studied Mr. Funk’s book and wrote their own personal narratives. Inspired by his
book, students asked Mr. Funk questions about his book during the Skype call and how to become future authors.
Season for Giving The generous spirit of the Levittown school community was evident as students and staff came together at the Levittown Memorial Education Center to wrap gifts during the seventh annual Adopt-A-Family Program. Under the direction of Esta Lachow and Gina Interdonato, and the community’s donations of toys, clothes
and household items, 200 students and local families will experience a holiday that sparkles. “Your help every step of the way is phenomenal,” Ms. Lachow told the gift wrappers. On December 14th, the community came together to wrap the donations and to assist in loading up trucks for the delivery of gifts. Students from

For instance, second-graders used their first initial and codes on a worksheet to create binary bracelets. They then followed the instructions on code.org

The goal was to expose students to primary coding concepts and interest them in taking computer science education courses, Principal Anthony Ciuffo said. Teacher David Sposito

Sharing Music Levittown studentmusicians with Northside School’s Instrumental Ensemble, directed by Jill Castillo, and the Northside Holiday Singers, directed by Isabella McClancy, performed at the Levittown Senior Center in collaboration with Ron Castillo, music director at Manhattan Hunter Science
High School. The Instrumental Ensemble played lively holiday selections for their appreciative audience of seniors from the community, while the Holiday Singers performed an array of carols and holiday songs. The students and seniors then took part in a final sing-a-long led by
Mr. Castillo. After the performance, the students and seniors enjoyed cookies and juice together while talking about their experiences. This community activity furthered Northside School’s goal to develop caring citizens now and in the future.
Dragon Pride Eight Division Avenue High School students, two from each grade, received the first Dragon Pride Award for outstanding character and citizenship during the first quarter of the year. Conceived by the Division Avenue School Development Committee and chaired by assistant
principal John Coscia, the Dragon Pride Award recognizes the tenets of dignity, respect, accountability, generosity, open-mindedness and noble actions. The following students were nominated by staff for their contributions to the positive quality of life on the Division Avenue High
School campus and in the Levittown community: Sabrina Manos, Justin Oh, Taranjit Parmar, Anthony Richard, Melissa Rispoli, Brandon Smith, Sebastyen Suarez and Annie Tao. The Levittown School District congratulates the students on this outstanding achievement.

Division Avenue High School senior Kristin Schmidt was selected as a national semifinalist in the 2015-2016 CocaCola Scholars Foundation Program for her leadership, academic achievement and commitment to the community. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Program is one of the nation’s most recognized corporate scholarship sponsors. Since its inception, more than 4,250 scholarship recipients, called Coca Cola Scholars, have benefitted from more than $38 million in college scholarship awards. Kristin is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and was designated as one of the high school’s top students.
She is a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society, as well as secretary of the Math Honor Society. In addition, Kristin competes on both the Mathletes and Science Olympiad teams. Under the direction of science research teacher Gerard Marzigliano, Kristin has been working with Cold Spring Harbor professor Dr. Fang Xu to discover a gene that causes mutations in corn, which would eventually increase food production. Her commitment to service is witnessed in her work as a Peer Leader and member of the Humanitarian Club and Key Club. She has also been actively involved in community service efforts with the Levittown Baptist
Church. Division Avenue High School guidance counselor Sharlene Defendini said, “I am so proud to have a Coca Cola Scholars Foundation Program Semifinalist and such a hardworking and exceptional student.” Once semifinalist applications are reviewed, 250 regional finalists will be chosen to continue the selection process and will be determined in late January. Finalists will then interview in person or via web conference to become one of 150 Coca-Cola Scholars. Students selected as Coca-Cola Scholars will attend Scholars Weekend in Atlanta this coming spring to receive a scholarship totaling $20,000 from the CocaCola Scholars Foundation.
Poetry Out Loud A recent poetry contest at Mepham High School that began at the classroom level had more than 500 students participating. “Poetry Out Loud encourages the
study of great poetry through memorization, performance and competition,” said organizer and English teacher Nicole Maresca. From there, students

Speaking with Community On December 8th, Regent Roger Tilles visited East Meadow School District to discuss the future of public education and answer community members’ questions. Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo welcomed Regent Tilles back to East Meadow to address the concerning issues teachers, administrators, faculty and families have. During his visit, Regent Tilles informed community
members that the Board of Regents has been listening to the community and believes there will be a change to student testing and teacher evaluations to ensure students receive the best possible education. He noted that although student testing is important, there are different pathways to assess student learning. As Regent Tilles explained, he believes tests will become adaptive, shorter and better suited for students. In
addition, he hopes teacher evaluations are based on student’s performance in the classroom, not on state assessments. Mr. Campo thanked Regent Tilles for spending time with the community. “Thank you, Regent Tilles for speaking to us about our students’ education,” Mr. Campo said. “We appreciate your time and we appreciate you. You are always welcome in the East Meadow community!”

Guilds Support he Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $65,333 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. This donation will enhance the hospital’s anesthesia services by supporting the acquisition
of an Apollo® Anesthesia Machine, an advanced system with ventilation technology to support patients of any age. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2015 donations to a total of more than $211,000 for various
programs, including surgical intensive care and emergency services. Made up of volunteers from surrounding communities, the Guilds have raised more than $10 million for the hospital since 1958.

Virtual Author Visit Forest Lake Elementary School students in Wantagh visited with popular children’s author Laura Murray during a Skype session. Murray wrote “The Gingerbread Man,” “The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School”
and “The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose at School.” “Students give me ideas and inspire me,” Murray said. “My ideas also come from funny and interesting things that happen in life.” The students learned to
ask “what if,” to revise their work multiple times and to keep a journal of ideas. She also gave them a riddle to figure out the subject of her next book coming out this summer.

Students had an opportunity to place their handmade ornaments on the tree and then staff, students and parents counted down to light the tree. This was followed by individual pictures and personal time with Santa. Snacks were served and each student received a toy of their choice.
