My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Students in the North Bellmore School District collected nearly 2,000 pounds of candy that will be sent to troops overseas for the holidays. The successful Candy for Troops drive began just

after Halloween, and ended in early December. Jerry Harrington, a parent at Saw Mill Road Elementary School who works in the airline industry, picked up boxes filled with treats from the

Research Finalist schools and brought them to a regional airport. The candy will make its way to members of the military in Kuwait, Qatar and Afghanistan.

Four finalists will each receive a $1,000 prize and the top three will travel to the AAN conference in Boston, Massachusetts next April. Many considerations have to be accounted for before starting your own business and SCORE will go over them with interested individuals. Factors to keep in mind, which are discussed by mentors, include the business concept, marketing plans, financial projections, funding sources, legal issues, how to avoid costly mistakes, and insurance requirements. Participants will receive detailed instructions on how to evaluate their business concept. Prospective business owners will do this by reviewing a draft of a feasibility plan of a sample business. They will also learn how to research industry profile data, customer data, financial projections, and other information with the assistance of a Score mentor. SCORE has been actively assisting individuals to reach their goals for over fifty years nationally. According to their website, SCORE assisted in the creation of over 53,000 businesses in 2015. Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, along with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, announced an exciting new partnership between SCORE Long Island, a provider of mentoring services for individuals who seek to start or expand a new business, and the Town’s Department of Occupational Resources (DOOR). SCORE volunteers will host workshops on “How to Start a New Business” periodically and provide one-on-one counseling at 50 Clinton Street in Hempstead four days a week. “Starting a new business can be intimidating, but with the right guidance you can navigate the obstacles associated with being a new entrepreneur,” Santino said. “SCORE Long Island, in partnership with our Town’s Department of Occupational Resources, can assist novices reach their business-owning dreams and goals.” “We’re partnering with

Virtual Reality Members of Hofstra University’s Business Entrepreneurship precollege program visited Wantagh Middle School’s Computer Science Club to discuss the future of virtual reality. Michael Chisema, senior director of administration

and finance, explained that the goal of the visit was to discuss possible and emerging careers in virtual reality and 3-D printing and to demonstrate products, which already exist on the market. During the meeting the students had the

opportunity to test variations of an oculus rift and a Google Cardboard VR. The Hofstra University faculty also demonstrated use of a 3-D printer. In addition, each student received a 3-D printed computer club logo as a keepsake.

COURT OF HONOR - Presiding Officer Norma L. Gonsalves attended Boy Scout Troop 96’s Eagle Court of Honor for Eagle Scout Matthew F. Kowalski at St. Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh. Matthew also resides in Wantagh. For his project, he created the “Feel Good” movie channel at St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage which provides free access for all patients to an in- house TV channel showing uplifting movies. Matthew also earned 21 Merit Badges and served his troop in a variety of leadership positions.

A-Buzz with Talent Bellmore student Sam Kalish was the winner of Winthrop Avenue’s annual fourth-grade spelling bee with William Cona, Spenser Perlmutter and Skylar White technically all placing second in the competition. Fourteen top studentspellers battled it out on the auditorium stage to claim the title of top speller, with teacher Lauren McHale as moderator

and teachers Carolyn Buckley, Deirdre Golden and Alexandra Grodin as judges. The competition was challenging, when after seven rounds and the misspelling of “costume” and “disappear,” Sam gave the correct spelling of “paragraph,” making him the clear winner. Prior to the spelling bee, contests were held in individual classrooms, and the two top spellers

from each class were invited to participate in the competition. The district also congratulates Alex Cerrotta, Valentino DeLuna, Hunter Goldberg, Connor Hovell, Jacob Krukas, Hannah Levine, Jack Levitt, Jarret Oken, Mark Prainito and Gabriella Schechtman on their outstanding participation and sportsmanship.

Sweet Tradition Upon entering the Abbey Lane Elementary School cafeteria in Levittown, the sweet aroma of candy, icing and graham crackers filled the air as students and parents participated in a gingerbread house making activity. Prior to making the

gingerbread houses, the kindergarten students read multiple tales about the famous gingerbread man. During class discussions, the students compared and contrasted how the gingerbread man was depicted in each tale and discussed how each story

was similar and different. The culminating activity was the making and decorating of their own gingerbread houses, making a holiday decoration to be enjoyed during the holiday season.

Part of the North Bellmore School District’s mission is to inspire students to contribute to the global community. This holiday season, children have been doing just that by holding collections for food, toys and clothing. At Saw Mill Road Elementary School, a food drive will benefit local families in need, with donations going to the Community Cupboard at the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School. Each grade was assigned specific nonperishable items to bring in to ensure that a variety of food was collected. Members of Students Against Destructive Decisions created posters, which were hung throughout the hallways to promote the drive.

The Student Council organized a pajama drive, an idea brought by thirdgrader Luke Fischetti after successfully doing it on his own last year. The pajamas will be sent to the Ashley Wade Foundation, which supports children with chronic illnesses. Luke said he came up with the idea to “help kids in need and brighten their holidays” and was proud to have his classmates join the effort this year. Newbridge Road Elementary School hosted a toy drive for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, with students asked to bring new, unwrapped toys. Generosity is the character trait of the month at the school, and Theissen spoke to the children about his organization and the importance of giving to the

less fortunate. S c h o o l s throughout the district partnered with the Bellmore Lions Club to collect hats, scarves, gloves and other winter clothing accessories, which will be distributed to children living in shelters in Nassau County. The district and PTA Council also worked together to hold a Coats for Kids drive. Students were asked to bring in new or gently used jackets to benefit Long Island families. “It’s always heartwarming to see the community come together in support of those who are in need,” said Newbridge Road Principal Denise Fisher. “It’s nice that we’re teaching the students at a young age how to give back.”

Up to Code North Bellmore elementary students joined millions of youngsters around the world by taking part in the Hour of Code campaign from December 5th-9th. The international movement sponsored by Code.org aimed to take the mystery out of coding by showing how anyone can learn the basics of computer programming. Throughout the week, students in third through sixth grades did coding activities as instructional technology specialists Michael Bevilacqua and Jenna Stack visited classrooms. “The students

understand that they don’t have to just consume media, they can create it,” said Ms. Stack. “The Hour of Code is well received. The kids enjoy it and the teachers are seeing the benefits.” Children made simple video games using coding languages appropriate to their respective grade levels, such as Scratch and Code Monkey. They also learned how computer programming pertains to their everyday lives and gained an appreciation for the people who make the video games they play, the mobile apps they use and the animated movies they watch.

Computer coding fosters creativity, imagination, innovation and individual expression while allowing children to develop their problem-solving abilities. The Hour of Code introduced students to computer science skills that are required for numerous jobs and even college-level courses. “I like to learn this because you can you do so many things with these skills,” said John Hinojosa, a sixth-grader at Martin Avenue Elementary School. “It’s going to help me and I can have fun with this.”

Inspired by a true story they read in their English classes, seventh-grade students at Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools in the East Meadow School District walked a mile around their school grounds on December 6th to raise funds for Island Harvest and Water for South Sudan. As part of their English curriculum, the seventhgraders read Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water.” The book, a New

York Times bestseller, is based on the true story of Salva, an 11-year-old boy who safely led 150 boys to Kenya during the civil war in South Sudan. With Salva’s tale as the inspiration, the English department coordinated a water walk to bring the message closer to home while enabling students to help others in need. Each student contributed to the cause by donating $1 to carry a gallon of water during

The students’ efforts resulted in the donation of more than 600 jugs of water to Island Harvest, a hunger relief organization with the mission of “ending hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island,” and more than $4,000 was raised by students, families, teachers and administrators for Water for South Sudan, a nonprofit organization that provides clean, safe water to the region.

The generous holiday spirit of the Levittown community was palpable on December 1212 as students and staff gathered in the Levittown Memorial Education Center to wrap gifts collected for the

annual Adopt-A-Family Program. Under the direction of Esta Lachow and Gina Interdonato along with the community’s donations of toys, clothes, food and household items, 231

He was also recently selected for the Empire Challenge in which Long Island’s top football players compete against New York City’s team. As a wrestler, Ryan was designated as All-County and as a state qualifier. He also played lacrosse in the ninth and 10th grade and will participate in shot put on the school’s varsity track team this spring. When not on the field or mat, Ryan dedicates time to his studies and school activities. He is a

member of the National Honor Society, an Advance Placement Scholar, as well as a Peer Leader. He also volunteers with the Levittown Pride summer camp and works on a volunteer basis with clients at New York Sports Physical Therapy and Wellness. Ryan plans on studying biology next fall to prepare for a career in physical therapy. When asked what motivates him, Ryan said, “My teammates and parents push me and help me work hard to be an outstanding athlete.”

Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently announced the winners of the 10th annual school contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. The student winners are Taylor Drew, 12th grade, first place; Samantha Pepe, 12th grade, second place; and Candace Casimir, ninth grade, third place. Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. Levittown students at Northside School attended an in-house field trip to American Indian territory to learn more about the Eastern Woodland Native Americans during a presentation by Marianne Chasen and Robert Vetter titled “Journeys

Into American Indian Territory.” During the curriculumbased event, students discussed the geographical location of the Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples and their methods of survival. During the program, students explored the

interior of a longhouse, examined artifacts in an American Indian museum, participated in traditional American Indian games, learned to make clay pots and delved into the American Indians’ form of government.

Throughout November, Mepham’s English teachers held classroom competitions where students competed for a chance to take part in the schoolwide competition in December. On December 13th, nearly 80 students filled the school’s choral room to hear 24 classroom winners recite their poems for a chance to advance to the regional competition to be held at Nassau Community College on February 3rd, 2017. The competition was organized by English Chairperson Mary Donnelly and Nicole Maresca, who teaches English and Creative Writing and moderates Fragments, Mepham’s literary magazine.

“At Mepham High School, students recited works they selected from an anthology of nearly 1,000 classic and contemporary poems,” Donnelly explained. “Judges evaluated student performances on criteria including articulation, evidence of understanding, level of difficulty and accuracy.” Taylor Drew and Samantha Pepe will represent Mepham at the regional competition in February, with hopes of advancing to state and ultimately the national competition similar to Mepham alumnus and 2011 state champion Steven Tsai.

Concert for a Cure The Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter 2817 of East Meadow High School partnered with the American Cancer Society to put an end to cancer by hosting Concert for a Cure. Since the beginning of the school year, members of Tri-M have been participating in studentled chamber ensembles before and after school to perfect their concert performance. The honor society’s members honed their musicianship skills as they organized rehearsals, communicated with their peers and cohesively arranged music compositions without the

guidance of teachers. During the concert’s luminaria ceremony, in which candles were lit in memory of those who have lost the battle to cancer, ACS Community Manager Meaghan Neary acknowledged the top three student fundraisers: freshman Leilani Blakeman ($958), senior and Tri-M President Jaden Nogee ($385) and sophomore Julia Cuttone ($255). “Our luminaria ceremony is an opportunity to remember those we have lost and also a chance to celebrate their lives,” said Neary. “We want to pay tribute to those we

love and all those who have been touched by cancer.” Following, Jaden read the poem “One Little Candle” by Carol Dunn and asked the audience to observe a moment of silence in memory of those lost to cancer. The benefit concert was a great success, generating more than $3,500 in donations. The members of Tri-M were honored to unite their passion for music and community service to assist in the battle against cancer that has affected many people in their lives.

Teachers in the North Bellmore School District are staying current with the latest trends in education by taking part in professional development opportunities without having to travel very far. The North Bellmore Teacher Center offers a wealth of opportunities for the district’s educators to learn about new programs and strategies, with the goal of improving instruction. The Teacher Center, located in two classrooms at the Jacob Gunther School, hosted an open house on December 5th. The focus was on the Reader’s, Writer’s and Math workshops, a new approach in the district designed to provide targeted and individualized instruction to students. Several teachers created display boards on how

they have implemented these workshops into their classrooms, including photos and samples of student work. Park Avenue Elementary School firstgrade teacher Robin Obey’s board highlighted a literacy initiative in her classroom, a Best Friends Book Party. The Teacher Center is a partnership between the district and the North Bellmore Teachers Association, and is led by a policy board of administrators, teachers and community members. They select workshop offerings based on an annual needs assessment as well as informal feedback from teachers. “We’re in tune with what the teachers need,” said Lorraine Doyle, chairwoman of the policy board and Martin Avenue School kindergarten

teacher. “The whole goal is to make a positive impact on student learning.” One classroom is used for training sessions and the other serves as a professional development resource center. Workshops are led by either district teachers or outside educational consultants. Teachers can earn in-service credit for attending these classes. “The teachers come and they learn and they implement what they’re learning into the classrooms,” said Director Linda Mann, a reading teacher at Saw Mill Road School. The Teacher Center, funded by the state, was established 36 years ago as one of the first in New York and is one of 41 on Long Island.

Thank You for Kindness Bulletin boards located in the hallway at East Broadway School in Levittown School District are plastered in Post-it notes filled with recognitions of kind acts performed by students. Called the Positive Postit Program, each student was encouraged to write down a peer’s kind act for which they are thankful, promoting kindness and a positive vibe throughout the school.

Spearheaded by social workers Lisa Gribetz and Malorie Klieber and teacher Jeannine Denning, the goal of the Positive Post-it Program was to promote positive language and school community, as taught through the district’s Get a Voice character education program. Students recognized peers for simply sharing a snack, having empathy when a relative died,

including them in recess, for writing a get-well card and more. Denning, Gribetz and Klieber noted that in addition to appreciating the kind acts of others, the students learned to recognize their peers’ feelings and were encouraged to perform their own acts of kindness, especially during this holiday season.

In an effort to encourage healthy lifestyle choices, Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District has introduced a CrossFit Kids program. Patty Tansey, the school’s speech pathologist, has been visiting fourththrough sixth-grade classes and teaching

students simple exercises they can do throughout the day in the confines of their classrooms. She is sharing quick workouts that can be done in between lessons, such as flutter kicks, pushups, sumo deadlifts and more. The goal is to create more opportunities for movement throughout the

day, as research suggests that a child’s learning capacity improves after exercise. Ms. Tansey also speaks with students about proper nutrition. “It’s teaching them to be turned on to a healthy lifestyle,” she said. “You’re setting the building blocks to making good choices.”

Football Recognized The Wellington C. Mepham High School football team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was recently recognized as the 2016 Community Service Award winner for Nassau County.

The award was given out at the December 7th Nassau County High School Football Coaches Association Gridiron Banquet and recognizes a team that has given back to the community through community service

projects and fundraisers. “This past season the team continued its tradition of raising money for breast cancer awareness,” said coach and Mepham Athletic Director Anthony Cracco. “The parents and players

sold T-shirts and collected donations and made a $1,000 contribution to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides for Breast Cancer program.” Additionally, the team spent a Sunday cleaning up Newbridge Road Park

as a way to thank the local community for their support of their program. “This project was especially meaningful as many of the players began their playing careers on the fields at Newbridge,” Cracco said.

“I am extremely proud of our football families’ efforts to give back to their community. The players are a great group of young men and are extremely deserving of this honor.”

Gift of Music Prior to the December 7th public meeting of the board of education, the MacArthur High School Winter Wind Ensemble shared the gift of music with a performance of holiday tunes for trustees, administrators and members of the Levittown

community. Under the direction of Joseph Romano, the Winter Wind Ensemble is an extracurricular group comprised of MacArthur High School’s most talented woodwind musicians. The ensemble begins practicing in the

fall to prepare a repertoire of more than two-dozen winter holiday selections. During the season, the Winter Wind Ensemble will entertain the community during performances at shopping malls and high school hallways to ring in the holiday spirit.

SHUFFLEBOARD SUCCESS - Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino visited the Wantagh Senior Center on November 17th to congratulate the Wantagh Senior Team on its 7th Shuffleboard Championship.
