(NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at
raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.
AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have
expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. Mel B: From Spice Girl to Survivor By Allison Kugel
Melanie Brown aka Mel B has reigned supreme as the spiciest of her band mates since bursting onto the entertainment scene as Scary Spice in 1996, with the group’s #1 hit Wannabe. She instantly began making headlines, and she never stopped. Her tempestuous marriages and some romantic near misses, including her split from Eddie Murphy heard ‘round the world, have at times overshadowed her on-camera talent on recent hit shows like UK’s X Factor and America’s Got Talent. In her recently released memoir, Brutally Honest, Mel opens up about her ten year marriage to exhusband, Stephen Belafonte, whom she claims kept her captive with multiple forms of abuse. She is finally speaking out and advocating for victims of domestic partner abuse, and she is excited about 2019’s Spice Girls reunion tour. Allison Kugel: After all you have been through, how are your spirits?

Mel B: Obviously, I’m still on my healing path and it’s going to be an ongoing thing. I’m taking care of myself, meditating, doing my Reiki and eating well. I actually couldn’t be happier right now. I know there
are more happier times to come, but right now I’m in a really good place and it’s taken me a long time to even get to this place, so I’m thankful. Allison Kugel: Let’s go back a bit. What did the Spice Girls fame of the 1990s feel like for you? Mel B: It was tiring, but we really didn’t care because it was five girls together who had each other, living our dream life. We were living in England, struggling financially, not having much to eat, convincing people to let us borrow their recording studios so that we could sit down, and write and [record] our music. There was a phase of a couple of years where it was really tough. When we got to release our first single, Wannabe, and we signed with a record company and got Simon Fuller involved to manage us, it was really good, happy times that all five of us had dreamed of. We were traveling the world, singing, performing, dancing, writing music and making a movie. It was a really beautiful few years. Of course, we were tired, because we didn’t allow ourselves any time off. We knew that we had to soar through life like a big tornado and strike while the iron was hot.
Allison Kugel: What do you feel you came into this life as Melanie Brown to learn? Mel B: The number one thing is that I come from a white mother and a black father. Back in the 1970s when they got together and had me, that was seen as something that wasn’t really done. They had a lot of things that they had to overcome in bringing me into the world and raising me. I had to find my own identity. Apart from the likes of Neneh Cherry and maybe Tracy Chapman, there really wasn’t anybody that I could look up to where I felt like I belonged, or anyone who I felt like I even looked like. For me, it was all about creating a path where hopefully other mixedrace girls, and other mixed-race kids could actually follow. I do believe I am here, somewhat, to make it okay to be in the skin that you’re in. Allison Kugel: Obviously, the situation with your most recent ex, Stephen Belafonte, is extremely contentious. In general, how are you navigating co-parenting your three daughters with three different fathers in the picture? Mel B: My oldest is nineteen, so I had to do the every other weekend and certain weekdays for eighteen years. I’ve never said a bad word about any of their fathers to my daughters. Angel’s eleven years old and she sees her dad (Eddie Murphy) on a regular basis. She’s actually going to his house [this] week to do the family Christmas card, which is really lovely. My seven-year-old, Madison, that’s all happening through the courts, so that is kind of out of my hands. One thing I do with all my three girls, is I make sure they know that they’re loved, and that they came from a place of a loving relationship. Even though they didn’t quite work out, and me and their dads didn’t stay together, they all know that they came from a lot of love. One thing that is mandatory is that I always make it a very exciting thing when I send them off to their fathers. Allison Kugel: After the abuse you experienced, are you frightened for your daughter, Madison, when you send her off to see your exhusband, Stephen? Mel B: All I can say is that I fought through the courts for her to have mandatory therapy every Saturday with a specialized therapist who is very aware of the situation. If there was anything for the therapist to be concerned about she would be able to flag it, based on the kind of intense therapy that she is doing with Madison. I have to trust and believe that if there was anything that I should be majorly concerned about,
I’ve got a professional right there that can spot it before I do. Allison Kugel: I would imagine it took courage to keep a lot of the more explicit passages in your book. What was the hardest part, not just to write, but to keep in the final draft? Mel B: Everything that is out there now is pretty salacious, and I know it seems so random about the sex and the drugs I wrote about. The physical and emotional abuse had already kind of been out there [in the media]. I just wanted to make sure that I clarified and made my puzzle understandable. When you read my book, you do understand that certain things were due to coping mechanisms, which are very common with somebody that’s in an abusive relationship. The book addresses things like why it took me so long to leave. It’s because you’re trapped, and you don’t have friends and family because you’ve been isolated due to how your abuser does things. That’s why in the back of my book, I put the 15 warning signs of what an abusive relationship looks like. Sometimes we don’t know until it is too late, and you’re heavily in it. I want my book to be an education and insight into what it looks like to be in an abusive relationship. Allison Kugel: Why make the recent public declaration that your middle daughter Angel’s father, Eddie Murphy, is the love of your life? Mel B: One of the parts of the book that my friend couldn’t quite piece together was… why was I at my most vulnerable when my abuser came into my life. I’d just had Angel. She was two months old and then the monster came into my life. My friend and co-writer, Louise [Gannon], was trying to figure out why I was feeling so vulnerable. Then it became, “Oh, you felt vulnerable because of the Eddie situation, so let’s talk about that.” I wanted to be able to talk about it and express it. I didn’t even fully understand it when we started talking about it; what went wrong and how it all kind of fell apart. It was important for me to put it all down on paper and do it from my recollection. I needed to remind myself that I do know what a loving, respectful relationship is, because I had that and much more with Eddie. It was so important for me to put pen to paper with that, because I also had never spoken about it. I wanted people to know, and I wanted my daughter to know that it was a very loving courtship. It didn’t end well, but it was one of the biggest love stories of my life. Allison Kugel: You’re about to run off to a Spice Girls meeting later. Can you share?
Mel B: It’s about our 2019 tour. We put six shows up for grabs and we ended up doing thirteen because they sold out. We’re going to be talking about staging, choreography and our dancers. It will be all of us on tour, but without Victoria. She sends all of us her blessing, but she has always been adamant that performing is not really her thing. She’s busy with her family and her fashion empire. I still have hope that at some point she joins us, but as of right now she’s not. Allison Kugel: The Scary Spice of twenty years ago was brash and bold, and very tell it like it is. You were the tough girl. After everything you’ve been through publicly, with heartbreak and abuse and people seeing that you are quite vulnerable, who will Scary Spice be as you head out on the 2019 Spice Girls tour? Mel B: I’m still the same. A little more educated and more aware, and I would say more honest which could be misinterpreted as being even more brash and even more loud (laughs).

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!
Leslie was referred by her Care Coordinator to receive Options Home and Community Based Services, HCBS. Her history included abuse by people in authority and makes her shy when meeting new people and unsure about anything new or unfamiliar. Leslie and her husband have been married for several years and as they’ve aged, they have developed some health issues. With minimal cooking skills, Leslie wanted to be able to prepare healthy meals for herself and
Leslie’s symptoms caused her such distress that she rarely left her apartment unless accompanied by her husband or mother. Even though her mother lives only a half a mile from her home, she has not walked there independently in 3-years. Leslie was determined to overcome her fear so that she could live a more fulfilled life…..go to stores, visit family and take an art class. For months, Leslie worked to become more familiar with the walking route to her mom’s. She gradually grew more comfortable and walked with an Options employee until she was ready to take the walk on her own. Leslie completed her first solo trip to her mother’s home and her family celebrated her accomplishment! They were so impressed by her courage that they became more involved in helping her achieve other goals. Now, with the support of her family, Leslie is applying for a gym membership and plans to work with her Options HCBS provider on becoming more fit and healthy. Leslie is less fearful of her community. She has learned that each small step brings her closer to the life she wants for herself and her family. The Holidays are a time of hope, love, joy and reflection. It’s a time to slow down, put our routines on hold and spend time with family. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have some time off, we are granted the best gift of all... the ability to be present with the people we love. For me, the days that fall between December 24th and January 2nd create a sacred pocket of space between me and the rest of the world. I can simply Be. Much of the time we forget that we are human beings, and not human doings. While some celebrate the season with raucous affairs and big crowds, I prefer getting cozy close to home, and I bake a ton! With all of the madness and magnitude going on in the world today, I still believe that America is the greatest nation on the planet. A quick glance at the New York Times headlines today reinforced my assumption.
No, I am not about to give you a travelogue about the true wonders of the City of Lights, but those of you who have been there will know what I mean! There has always been a special charm about that city which is difficult to describe. That’s why it’s so distressing to watch the weekend riots of the working class population striking for higher wages and a better standard of living. Burning tires and clashing with the riot police is understandable, but not the answer.
The UK is caught between “the devil and the deep blue sea.” The entire BREXIT original proposal (having England break away from the European Market) is now in chaos since their government and the voting public appear to be evenly divided as to whether to break away completely or return back to the Euro countries. By Patricia Scali of Bellmore, New York Nothing says The Holidays like dessert, and Patricia Scali’s family recipe for Red Devil Cake should add delicious festivity to your home this season! When Patricia and her two siblings were growing up, her late mom, Ethel Henry, began whipping up this delectable confection during World War II. When the war ended and the whole family was reunited, their Red Devil Cake tradition continued. Patricia’s mom, Ethel, baked this cake for the entire family as her three children were growing up. As Patricia recalls, “My father loved my mom’s famous Red Devil Cake, and so did all three of us kids. You’re going to love it!”

Casimir has studied French since seventh grade and speaks French Creole at home, as her parents are of Haitian

A Focus on Friendship To show gratitude for their friends, secondgraders at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District recently celebrated “Friendsgiving.” All activities in Nancy Del Rosario’s class focused on friendship the day before Thanksgiving. Children played the gratitude game
in which they picked sticks and had to say what they were thankful for based on the color, such as red for a person, orange for an object or blue for a skill they have. Students handed out gratitude slips to others in the school, wrote about the characteristics of good friends and even made a
friendship salad in which each ingredient symbolized a positive trait. Ms. Del Rosario told students to be grateful for the small moments in their lives, like when someone says hello or smiles at them, and encouraged them to spread kindness by doing the same.

Martin Avenue Hanukkah Party Although families may celebrate the holidays in different ways, students at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District learned that those traditions and customs bring people together. Friendship was the theme for the fourth-grade Hanukkah party on Dec. 4. It was organized by resource room teacher Beth
Niditch, who told stories from her childhood about how she and her friends would celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah together, regardless of their upbringing. Fourthgrade teacher Antoinetta Fischetti read aloud “The Magical Tale of the Friendship Dreidel.” Students played the dreidel game and enjoyed latkes prepared by Ms.
Niditch. Each child also received a bag of gelt — chocolate coins. “The holidays are all about friendship and being welcoming,” Ms. Niditch said. “We want to create dialogue among the students to foster acceptance, respect and understanding of each other’s traditions.”

Giving Thanks Through Music During the first concert of the year, Bellmore fourth-graders gave thanks through the gift of music during a holiday performance, held in the newly-renovated Winthrop Avenue School auditorium on November 16th. Under the direction of music teacher Maria Martucci and Mallory Aronoff, who directed the
choreography, the students performed a variety of patriotic and holidaythemed songs to thank veterans for their service and to show their gratitude for school, family and community. The theme of the concert was “being thankful,” and in addition to choral selections, students performed on their recorders. Ellen
Angelico, Sofia DeLuna, Emme Frimmer, Alexis Malerba, Nicholas Papazis, Francesca Stein also performed classical pieces on piano. Principal Sally Curto told the parents, “ Your children have shown great dedication to make this a wonderful concert.”

Book Character Parade Popular book personas, fairytale characters and superheroes paraded across the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center’s auditorium stage to the delight of parents and faculty during the school’s annual Book Character parade, held on October 31st. The Bellmore students briefly posed with their teachers before marching
around the auditorium and to their seats, where they participated in a singalong of Halloween tunes, under the direction of music teacher Randi Andersen. Principal Patricia Castine noted that the event ties in with the district’s literacy program and initiatives. “This is a literacy emergent time of their lives,” she said to the parents. “The best thing
you can do is read to your child every night.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo was also on hand to view the impressive and creative costumes. in the top one-tenth of 1 percent of math students in the grade across Long Island. To qualify for the title, Melanie was required to take an exam on proofs and submit a letter of recommendation from a member of the school’s faculty. This past summer, Melanie attended a class in paradoxes and infinitives at Hong Kong University, hosted by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth Program. She said she is interested in pursuing a career in math, although she is not yet sure of a future field. Meanwhile, Melanie is co-president of the school
Government Organization and treasurer of both the Class of 2021 and Minds Matter Club, which focuses on student mental health. Students, teachers, administrators and parents all had kind words for the five volunteer members of the Bellmore School District Board of Education on Nov. 20 in honor of School Board Recognition Week. Superintendent Dr. Joseph Famularo complimented the trustees for their great leadership and commitment to fostering a community of learners. He also thanked them for their investment in facilities, as the meeting was held in the newly renovated Winthrop Avenue School auditorium. Reinhard Early Childhood Center Principal Patricia Castine, speaking on behalf of the
Principals Association, said the board members always put students first and provide the young learners with unique opportunities. Bellmore Faculty Organization President Christopher Merz said the teachers made a donation on behalf of the board to the Ronald McDonald House to support families staying there. PTA President Chantal Dembo acknowledged the trustees for looking at all aspects of education with an open mind and foresight. She presented each of them with a PTA leadership survival kit. Each item had significance like a rubber band reminding them to be flexible, a crayon to inspire them to go out and color
the world, Post-it notes to keep the communication flowing and stars to remind them what they are all reaching for. Students from the three elementary schools sang the district’s Leadership Song, under the direction of music teachers Randi Andersen, Laura Itkovitz and Maria Martucci. Sixthgraders Julie Kolinsky and Jack Messenger also had words of thanks for the board. After hearing the student singers, Trustee Jay L.T. Breakstone said the greatest gift that board members can receive is seeing first-hand the results of their efforts in educating children.
District’s New Art & Music Logo Students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were recently given the opportunity to show off their artistic abilities to design a new logo for the art and music department. Morgan Marcus, a junior at John F. Kennedy High School, created the winning design. “We were looking for a design that encapsulates the already existing Bellmore-Merrick logo, but with an added art and music flair,” explained
Cheryl Fontana, director of fine & performing arts and adult education. After narrowing down the submissions to the final four designs, voting was opened up to the entire student body and faculty to vote for their favorite via a Google form. “Interested students worked on them at home as well as some within their graphic design courses,” added Fontana. Marcus used Adobe Illustrator in her Creative Suite II class to design the
logo. “I was able to build on the skills I learned last year in Creative Suite I this year to help me create the logo,” Marcus said. “I’ve become increasingly interested in graphic design and it’s something I might consider pursuing in the future.” Other finalists included Kennedy’s Gabriella Greiser, Alexander Pakula and Matthew Woghin and Grace Beyer of Wellington C. Mepham High School.

KEEPING UP THE BEAT - Using xylophones, glockenspiels, bass bars and metallophones, second-graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District developed their rhythmic skills.
