They are seeking donations of new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 19, which will be given to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation to benefit sick and underprivileged kids. Kindness is the theme for November at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, and it is being embraced by students, staff and parents who have come together to cultivate a community of compassion and gratitude. The PTA created a kindness bulletin board with K-N-D. The missing “I” is filled in by students standing in the open space. In the cafeteria, another bulletin board gives children the opportunity to write about anything they are grateful for in their lives. Sixth graders in the anti-bullying group are spreading kindness with literature. After attending an antibullying conference at Hofstra University earlier this fall, the students came back inspired to spread a positive message to their peers. Under the direction of Mary Meyers from the district’s Prevention Department, sixth graders visit kindergarten, first and second grade classes to read books about friendship and kindness. They are also planning to create a kindness mural. “We want to make sure that kids don’t bully, and that everyone is happy and kind,” said student Jackson Austin. Principal Danica Brugge noted that Nov. 13 is recognized as a World Kindness Day, so it was fitting for the school to devote the whole month to the concept, with the expectation that students will carry the message in their hearts for life.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board are pleased to announce the Annual ‘Holiday on Ice’ Show will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21st at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue. Admission to the show is free. Students from the Town’s Ice Skating Program will perform an enchanting, holidaythemed skating exhibition and the evening includes an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are two teams comprised of players from the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey program. Santa Claus is scheduled to visit with children and take photographs after the show. “This special holiday performance is an annual

Teacher Wins Innovations Grant Nancy O’Connor, a Wantagh business, career and technical education teacher at the middle and high schools, is the recipient of a $500 2019 Business Teachers Association of New York State Innovations Grant. The award will be used to

fund iPad floor stands for the high school’s Virtual Enterprise trade shows. BTANYS encourages members to create or expand programs and activities which infuse excitement and interest in the pursuit of business education students in New

York State. The grant is designed to fund creative and innovative projects to enhance learning experiences for business education students not already included in the district budget.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, located in Garden City, has received a grant of $25,250 from the LI2Day Walk. Each year, since the event was established in 2004, a team representing the Adelphi program participates in the walk. To date, the program

has received $465,200 to help in their efforts to provide emotional support to people coping with breast cancer. The next walk is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2020. This 10K walk will be held at Sunken Meadow State Park in Smithtown. There is a registration fee of $75 and each walker

Symphonic Pops Of Long Island The Symphonic Pops of Long Island, an intergenerational orchestra of approximately 60 musicians all living on Long Island, will present a program of music on Sunday, December 22, at 2 pm at Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook, Road, North Merrick. The program will include: Chariots of Fire, Harry Potter Suite, Dance of the Tumblers, music from Frozen and other favorites. The Orchestra will once again be joined in concert with a special appearance by dancers from Oceanside Dance Center. The Orchestra (formerly known as the “Senior Pops Orchestra of Long Island”) is led by Stephen Michael

Smith who has been Music Director since 2011. His guest conducting credits include: The Wroclaw Philharmonic (Poland), St. Petersburg Camerata (Russia), Karlovy Vary Philharmonic (Czech Republic) in addition to conducting various orchestras across the Country. Mr. Smith also currently serves as Music Director for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset. The Symphonic Pops recently performed at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook where 350+ Veterans were in attendance. This concert is open to the public and a

suggested donation of $10 will be requested at the door (kids are free). The facility is handicapped accessible, and there is adequate free parking. The Symphonic Pops of Long Island is a communitybased volunteer orchestra under the direction of Stephen Michael Smith. Bobby Fehrenbach, head football coach at Levittown Public Schools’ General Douglas MacArthur High School was recently recognized as the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week for week eight of the 2019 season. The New York Giants and Gatorade selected Fehrenbach for this prestigious honor based on his commitment to promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and his overall community involvement. Each week during the high school football season, the Giants select one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. Fehrenbach is an alumnus of MacArthur High School

who graduated in 1984. He served as MacArthur’s assistant football coach from 1991-98 before becoming the head coach in 1999. This season has been a successful one for the team. Under the leadership of Fehrenbach, MacArthur High School defeated Garden City High School 27-7 on the road to move to 7-0 on the season. The win ended Garden City’s 42 game winning streak, which spanned three plus seasons, including three Long Island Class II Championships. “Of all the schools in the Tri-State area, it is pretty humbling as one of a handful of coaches to get recognized,” said Fehrenbach.

The Giants Foundation and Gatorade will present a $2,000 check to MacArthur High School’s football program in his honor. Fehrenbach will receive a certificate of recognition signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Giants Head Coach Pat Shurmur. He was acknowledged with an in-stadium announcement when the Giants hosted the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 1 and is invited to attend a dinner hosted by the Giants at MetLife Stadium in the Spring for all 2019 Coach of the Week honorees and the 2019 Coach of the Year. Fehrenbach will also be invited with his team to a Giants preseason game in 2020.
