One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss

is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are finished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. What’s the big rush? This time of year is not one long list to be accomplished in as little time as humanly possible; it is made up of moments to be cherished, memories to reflect upon and add to with each passing year. Take a deep breath, take lots of pictures – and enjoy.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will host a full-day Anger Management Workshop on Saturday, December 21st, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the agency’s Mineola office. The workshop provides participants with practical steps to address their triggers and learn how to manage their frustration in stressful situations. This full-day workshop is in addition to the weekly sessions offered from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays at the Ronkonkoma office and Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Mineola office. Classroom exercises and instructional materials are used to help guide participants in learning a variety of skills including stress management, communication training, anger management, empathy, and conflict resolution, as well as

skills in developing better judgment and impulse control. Participants will receive an official certificate after completing the course. LICADD’s anger management services are approved by all courts, probation departments, and Child Protective Services. “The holidays are a difficult time for many people,” said LICADD Anger Management Program Coordinator Marcie Siciliano. “This workshop provides useful skills and resources to effectively manage the environmental stressors and anger triggers that surface during this season.” Participants are encouraged to continue their learning experience by enrolling in LICADD’s weekly Anger Management Series. LICADD is the premier provider of anger management classes on

Long Island, offering low-cost workshops, classes, and coaching in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The fee for the full-day Anger Management Workshop is $199. Payment for LICADD’s anger management services may be made via check, cash, or major credit card. Those on Medicaid or Public Assistance, and EAP clients, are eligible for a reduction in fees. Anger Management Workshops

A Time For Rest & Relaxation

When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a policeman. When I was in fourth grade, I dreamed of becoming a pro football player. In middle school, I wanted to be a businessman. Now, as I am supposed to be finalizing the college application process, I have realized that I have no idea what I want to be. This is undoubtably the most important decision I have had to make in my life. Unsurprisingly, it is also the most stressful. Combined with the already demanding Advanced Placement course load, I am also

juggling clubs, sports and now dozens of college applications. There are so many tasks on the checklist that I call my daily routine that it is hard to cram them all into a twentyfour hour time period. Being a student is a fulltime job. Sure, I don’t have to worry about bills, and I don’t have many major responsibilities; but sometimes the stress is too much. As much as I enjoy going to school and being as involved as I am, there comes a time when I just need a break. Thankfully, in just a few days it will be Christmas Vacation.

Over two weeks off with no responsibilities. By then, I will be all done applying to college. The ball will be in their court. At that point, there will be nothing I can do but wait and hope my dream school makes the right decision. Once Christmas Vacation rolls around, I won’t have to worry about anything. I will finally be able to focus on having a great senior year. There is plenty of time to discover what career is right for me. For now, I am content just being a dedicated student, and more importantly, a happy kid.

Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In 2014, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long

Island by helping to further the education of worthy students planning a career in the field. Students interested in applying for these scholarships can find more information and an application on the LIHS website at www.lihort. org. Applications will be accepted until March 1st, 2014.

In the true holiday spirit, readers, employees and editors of Full Throttle Magazine gathered hundreds of toys and gifts that were then donated to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Sunday, December 8th. Roaring down Nicolls Road in the cold weather, over 50 Long Island motorcycle riders led by

WBAB’s ‘Fingers’ and escorted by numerous local fire department engines embarked on a 15-mile mission Sunday morning to deliver hundreds of toys to the young patients who anxiously awaited their arrival. Lee and Greg Sheridan, owners of Full Throttle Magazine, have organized this event for the past four

years in efforts to make the children’s stay in the hospital a little easier. Gifts and toys were collected during the publications Winter Wonderland event on December 4th, which was hosted at 89 North in Patchogue. This year they were joined by the Sons of Italia Motorcycle Club and several local Fire Departments.

lots, walk consciously. Instead of looking down, look up and see where your feet will move next to anticipate ice or an uneven surface. Occasionally scan from left to right to ensure you are not in the way of vehicles or other hazards. TIP #4: Make sure you can hear. While seeing the environment is important, you also want to be sure you can hear approaching traffic and other noises. Avoid listening to music or engaging in conversation that may prevent you from hearing oncoming traffic or snow removal equipment. TIP #5: Anticipate ice. Be weary of thin sheets of ice that may appear as wet pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear in the morning, in shady spots or where the sun shines during the day and melted snow refreezes at night. TIP #6: Walk steps slowly. When walking down steps, be sure to grip handrails firmly and plant your feet securely on each step. TIP #7: Enter a building carefully. When you get to your destination such as school, work, shopping center, etc., be sure to look at the floor as you enter the building. The floor may be wet with melted snow and ice. TIP #8: Be careful when you shift your weight. When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. TIP #9: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may be treacherous because it is likely to be located where snow and ice removal is not possible. TIP #10: Look up. Be careful about what you walk under. Injuries also can result from falling snow/ice as it blows, melts, or breaks away from awnings, buildings, etc. Following these tips will help ensure that you survive the snow and ice season safely. Brianna has been a three-year starter at goalie for the Blue Dragons and earned Nassau County’s Unsung Hero award as a sophomore and junior athlete. For the past two years, Brianna has been essential to the success of the team, with a record of 168 saves for 16 games (52

percent) as a junior team member. Varsity coach Sean Donellan said Brianna’s competitive spirit cannot be taught. “That characteristic will prepare Brianna to be successful in college,” he said. “She will be difficult to replace.”

Literary Awards Wantagh High School’s literary magazine, Escapades, has received 10 awards for photography and poetry from the Empire State School Press Association and Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In the ESSPA competition, Class of 2013 graduate Erin Smith received a Gold award for her photographs titled “Bound” and “Swing Perspective.” Erin also received a Bronze award for her photos “Umbrella” and “Boy.” Cara Messina, also a Class of 2013 graduate,

received a Silver award for her photo titled “Door.” In the competition’s poetry division, Sophia Pinciotto received a Silver award for her poem “Kites.” Honorable mention awards were also received for Lucy Bailey’s “Desert Star,” Jaclyn Onufrey’s “A Tourist” and Class of 2013 graduate Josie Rerecich’s “Sound of Raindrops – A Sestina.” Additionally, Cara and Josie were named Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle winners. Bowling Green Elementary School fifthgraders in the East Meadow School District recently visited the Buehler Challenger and Science Center in New Jersey. The center provides unique hands-on experiences which raise students’ expectations of success, foster in them a long-term interest in science, math and

During their field trip, the fifth-graders in teacher Richard Santer’s class worked as astronauts in the center’s space station simulator, learned how to utilize different controls and gadgets in the station, and united to work as a team while learning about science.

Money Management 101 (NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three teens thinks he or she will be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially independent. • Teens are unsure about

their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent). • The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place. • Of the 33 percent of teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent) think “budgets are for adults.” • More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting. “From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents longer. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent

(NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan

Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,”

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience.
