The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet.

Elf On The Shelf

East Broadway kindergarten students attended an assembly with Chanda Bell, co-author of Elf On The Shelf. Teacher Susan Polaski entered a national contest for a visit from Bell, and East Broadway was one of 11 schools throughout the nation out of 15,000 entries to receive a personal appearance from Bell, based out of Georgia, who wrote the literary sensation with her mother Carol Aebersold. Elf On The Shelf is about an elf that appears in random places in the weeks prior to Christmas to watch over households

and report good deeds to Santa. More than six million copies have been sold worldwide, and the book has sparked the tradition of placing an elf on shelves throughout millions of American households. During the assembly, Bell talked about the importance of tradition and fun facts about the writing process. She explained that she prefers writing on a computer and that every young author should pay attention to the spacing of words in their writing, capitalization and spelling. She also revealed that Elf On The Shelf was

rewritten 420 times before being published. “A good book is never done the first time you write it,” Bell told the students. Bell also read her newest book titled The Elf On The Shelf: Elf Pets Reindeer about a tiny reindeer that must use his heart full of magic with the assistance of elves to help Santa’s sleigh. After the reading, the students had the opportunity to ask questions, and Bell signed personal copies of Elf On The Shelf.

Gardiners Avenue Elementary School students had a visit from Nick Jacinto of Animal Adventures, reinforcing the terminology learned during the study of worldwide animal habitats. The Levittown students learned about nocturnal and diurnal habits,

camouflage and mimicry that assist in animal survival and what it means to be a warm- or coldblooded animal. The highlight of the assembly, however, was the sharing of Nick’s live animals, including Boots, the alligator, Tarzan, the green squirrel monkey,

and Warlock, the Eurasian eagle owl. The students were also introduced to Hokey Pokey, the giant African crested porcupine, a milk snake, a parrot and a giant red kangaroo that actually hopped around the gym floor, to the delight of audiences.

The student council at Barnum Woods Elementary School recently collected a variety of toys during December as part of its Toys for Tots drive. Student Council

advisers Pamela Lucas and Jacqueline Chionchio noted that they had a strong response this year. The student council collected a variety of items, including books, board games, dolls and puzzles.

All toys will be donated to the Toys for Tots Foundation, which distributes donations as holiday gifts to less fortunate children during the holiday season.

Exploring enVision Bellmore School District parents took part in a forum on December 2nd at Winthrop Avenue School regarding the district’s new enVision math program. During the evening workshop, parents received an overview of the new program, which is aligned

with the Common Core Learning Standards, before attending gradelevel breakout sessions throughout the building. The program was held to assist parents with their child’s work as they progress through school. “We want to be able

to help them help their children,” Dr. Joanne Dacek, the assistant superintendent for instructional services, said. “It’s a developmental continuum and we want to make sure the transition is seamless.”

PLAYING SANTA - Toys and gift cards that were collected during the Full Throttle Magazine Winter Wonderland event on December 3rd were donated to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the publication’s 5th Annual Toy Run. Hundreds of Long Island motorcycle riders and fire engines from the Centereach Fire Department roared down Nicolls Road to come spread holiday cheer to the children and their families, many who will be spending the holiday season in the hospital. This year ‘Santa’ was hoisted up via Hook & Ladder to see some of the children that were not well enough to meet Jolly ol’ St. Nick in person. The magazine also raised over $5,000 in addition to the toys, which will support the new home of Stony Brook Children’s.
