fulfilling the duties as our educational leader,” read Board President Gina Piskin in a letter at the Nov. 4 board of education meeting. “The growth of our district during his tenure can be measured in numerous ways and by a multitude of achievements among our students and staff.” Board trustee Janet Goller said it was an honor and privilege to work with DeTommaso. “The vision and changes you have brought to this district have made a tremendous impact and we have all benefitted from your commitment,” she added. “You are leaving behind a legacy.” The board took careful consideration of what is needed to replace DeTommaso and confidently appointed Michael Harrington, the district’s current assistant superintendent of curriculum to the position, effective July 1, 2021. Harrington began his career in 1998 as a social studies teacher in the Island Trees School District. After serving in that role for five years, Harrington joined Bellmore-Merrick as an assistant principal at Calhoun High School in 2003. Recognizing his strong leadership qualities, along with his
focus on being studentcentered, Mr. Harrington was selected as principal of Mepham High School in 2008 where he served until 2017. “During this time, Harrington showed extraordinary leadership in all areas of school administration, including instructional oversight, personnel management, budget administration and fostering a strong school and community culture,” Piskin said in a statement on behalf of the board. “Under his leadership, Mepham High School was highly successful in supporting student engagement and academic success.” Harrington was appointed to his current position in 2017 and has been intricately involved with every districtwide decision made. “He has proven he possesses the knowledge and ability to lead our district as we seek to provide the very best academic, co-curricular, extracurricular and student wellness experience for all our students,” Piskin added. “I promise to continue the ongoing path of excellence that John has paved,” Harrington addressed the board and community members.

John DeTommaso, superintendent of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for the last eight years, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2021. “It is our great fortune that you came back to finish where you started,” said board trustee Nina Lanci. DeTommaso began his career in Bellmore-Merrick in 1988 as a social studies teacher at Wellington C. Mepham High School. After serving in that role for six years, he assumed and fulfilled the position of director of athletics for the district for two years, before becoming assistant principal at Sanford H. Calhoun High School. In 2003, DeTommaso temporarily departed the district to become the principal of Bethpage High School where he served for six years, and thereafter served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Bethpage School District for four years. In March 2013, DeTommaso returned to Bellmore-Merrick where his career began, to serve as the superintendent of schools. “During this time, DeTommaso has done an exceptional job in

Photo by Dylan Wallace ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.

Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

Learn The Meaning Behind The Menorah
The menorah is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Chanukah. Displayed in homes, and often in windows, each year, the menorah is a ninebranched candelabrum that symbolizes Chanukah and much more. Menorahs have been part of the Jewish faith since ancient times. Isaiah 42:6 indicates that the menorah is a symbol of the nation of Israel, and its mission is to be a “light unto nations.” After being liberated from slavery in Egypt, the Jews were commanded by God to make the original menorah,
which at the time featured seven branches. The seven arms were believed to refer to the seven days of creation. The menorah was lit every evening and cleaned every morning. The wicks were replaced and fresh, consecrated olive oil was put into the cups to keep the flame alive. After the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and desecrated by the Romans, there remained only enough sealed, consecrated olive oil left to light the menorah for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, giving the Jews enough time
to make new consecrated oil. This became known as the Chanukah miracle. While the original menorahs were sevenbranched, the Chanukah menorah, or Chanukiah (Hanukkiah), became a nine-branched version lit only during the holiday. According to the Jewish holiday site Breaking Matzo, celebrants light a new candle or wick on each night of Chanukah. The ninth night, called the Shamash (“helper” or “servant”), is used to light all the other candles or oil lamps. To be kosher, the Shamash must be placed on a different level than the eight other candles. After both temples were destroyed, a new tradition developed in which Jews did not replicate anything from the destroyed temples. As a result, menorahs used in many Jewish services, apart from Chanukah, no longer had seven branches. Sixbranched menorahs became popular in some synagogues. However, the Jewish Virtual Library indicates that some rabbis have gone back to seven-armed menorahs for regular services because the modern ones are electrified and, therefore, cannot possibly be duplicates of the original Temple menorah. Lighting the Chanukah menorah gives celebrants the ability to embrace the holiness of the holiday and take a small part in Jewish history.
Deliver Delicious Brisket For The Holidays Beef brisket is a relatively inexpensive, yet highly versatile cut of meat. It’s equally at home in a pastrami or corned beef sandwich as it is on Christmas and Chanukah holiday tables. When cooked correctly, brisket is tender and delicious. Brisket comes from the area of cows or steers ages two and up, or veal ages two to four months, according to the recipe and cooking technique resource Food Fire Friends. The brisket can be found right above the leg in the area between the front legs. Brisket is essentially the lower chest, or pectoral region of the animal, responsible for holding up the weight of the cow. As a result, this is a dense and tough muscle area with a lot of connective tissue. Thanks to its density, brisket requires long cooking times at relatively low temperatures to produce a tender, boldly flavored beef dish. Brisket is best smoked or braised, which means simmered in a small amount of liquid. Most briskets will have a layer of fat on the surface. Better Homes and Gardens magazine says that this should be sliced away before preparing the brisket. Try using brisket in place of a rump roast in this recipe for “Beef Roast with Dark Rum Sauce” from “CrockPot® 365 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) from The Crock-Pot Kitchens. Keep in mind that brisket will require long cooking times in a slow cooker and may need to be cut in half to fit into the pot. Beef Roast with Dark Rum Sauce Makes 6 servings
1 beef rump roast or beef brisket (about 3 pounds) 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup dark rum, divided 1⁄2 cup beef broth 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 whole bay leaves, broken in half 1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar 1⁄4 cup lime juice
In a small bowl, combine allspice, salt, pepper, and cloves. Rub spices onto all 1 teaspoon ground allspice sides of meat. 1⁄2 teaspoon salt Heat oil in a skillet over 1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper medium heat until hot. 1⁄4 teaspoon ground cloves Sear beef on all sides,
turning as it browns. Transfer to Crock-Pot® slow cooker. Add 1⁄2 cup rum, broth, garlic, and bay leaves. Cover; cook on low 1 hour. In a small bowl, combine remaining 1⁄2 cup rum, brown sugar and lime juice, stirring well. Pour over roast. Continue cooking on low 4 to 6 hours for the rump roast (cook on high for 5 to 6 hours for brisket), or until beef is fork-tender. Baste beef occasionally with sauce. Remove and slice. Spoon sauce over beef to serve.
