BE MORE POSITIVE, HAPPY, HEALTHY & SMART That is what you will learn by reading, Positivity! Unlike other books regarding happiness, this book builds a foundation on being smarter, obtaining the skills necessary toward gainful employment and managing money successfully. How can a person be happy if they do not have a good job, cannot give a good speech and cannot invest wisely? In the highly competitive world in which we live, a foundation must be built that makes people happy and healthy. The foundation starts with positive thinking and a healthy lifestyle but it should be coupled with continuing education and prowess in accumulating and managing money. This answers the question, how can a person be happy in today’s world. “Reading Positivity is a game changer for every reader. The unique wisdom and philosophy of life that Harry Edelson shares proves that life can be easy and joyful for everyone. Imagine a world if seven billion people lived by Positivity! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. Harry Edelson has figured out true keys to a good life – which is the one common denominator everyone wants. And I know, because I’ve interviewed over 400 of the top CEOs, and I see a lot of wisdom and very successful people…and Harry has truly figured it out. What a gift you offer in this book.” ROBERT REISS, HOST & CEO, THE CEO SHOW “As Benjamin Franklin said: ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ The wisdom in Harry Edelson’s book is like finding a great investment. It continues to grow in value and will pay dividends throughout your life. This is the same philosophy that the brilliant investor, George Soros, has advocated through his Open Society Foundations where I served as a Trustee for many years” JOHN W. ALLEN, INT’L INVESTMENT BANKER AND CHAIRMAN OF GREATER CHINA CORP “The interesting thing about Harry Edelson is that he is usually the smartest guy in the room and what is amazing, the happiest guy in the room. His book tells it all and can be easily absorbed by adults and students alike.” ELIZABETH KABLER, TRUSTEE, ANNENBERG FOUNDATION TRUST AT SUNNYLANDS, FOUNDER, NY CENTER FOR LIVING

Student Spotlight A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan

The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

The Little Tree

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured!

By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa The little blue spruce spread its twigs. To be noticed, it tried many tricks. With hatchets, workers chopped down all Of the evergreens that had grown tall. They took away all the towering trees. Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees. To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant. All over different cities they were sent. Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced. The grounds yawned where the trees had been. Only the unwanted little spruce was seen. Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall. He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim. On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone. “Father, oh father, come and see. Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!” The child exclaimed and stroked the tree. “This is just the right size for me!”

“Peaceful at Argyle Lake” Photo by: Denise M. Poveromo, Copiague

The holidays over, soon one could see In front of the houses many a dried out tree. The spruce, however, was given a special spot On its owner’s well cared for garden lot. Each year, while the boy and the spruce did grow, A star was attached and glowed thru the snow.

Feasts of the Season By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa

The Holidays are being celebrated In ever so varied a shape and way. Little more is there to say. When X-mas or Hanukkah the heart does warm What matters to you, let that be your norm. To cheer and sanction what is dear to us Despite all the glitter and all the fuss Shall be the purpose of this season True belief will excel all rhyme or reason. Have a Happy! Be Happy! Let’s make each other Happy.

She had subjects complete a math equation and offered both positive and negative feedback. Perrone then re-checked their moods to see which feedback they responded better to. Fein has been working on her neuropsychology project under a mentor at the Feinstein Institute at North Shore-LIJ. Her research centers on deep brain stimulation on patients with Parkinson’s disease. After looking at archived data, Fein sought “to find a pattern to determine why

patients are affected by this treatment.” The Long Island Psychology Fair will take place on January 7th at Roslyn High School. Each student will put together a 10-minute presentation and will have five minutes for a question and answer session. “This is our second year entering the competition and we are very grateful to have students chosen once again to present,” said Jennifer Pefanis, director of Calhoun’s Advanced Science Research Program.

Members of the Sanford H. Calhoun High School boys soccer team were recently recognized at the Nassau County Boys Soccer Awards Dinner. Congratulations to the following students on their outstanding achievements:

Art Expo Interactive booths at the annual Art Expo at Sanford H. Calhoun High School ran the gamut, from hands on to strictly visual and from auditory to digital. Students rolled up their sleeves to paint with a gyroscope, spin art, Q-tips and more. Others molded clay into whatever suited them. The architecture students challenged others to build with cylinders as high as they could balance. The mosaic booth had a blown up photo of the beloved late teacher Doug

Smestad. Participants were asked to select a photo tile and, using a Q-tip and paint, replicate the value and color to later be affixed to the mosaic. “This is fun for everyone,” said senior Julia Tack. “And it’s such a great thing to do for his memory.” At the gyroscope booth, students used velocity and weight to create their “masterpieces.” Teachers approached the booth, selected their color palette and asked students to create a piece to display in

Musicians Selected their homes. “Basically we’re creating a pendulum with paint and we see where it goes,” explained senior art student Muriel Bingham. Art teachers Nancy Scott and Heather Lohr worked with students for nearly two months to set up this day-long event. Scott was able to get Brooklyn-based artist Ed Roth to create and donate stencils for stencil booth students to use.

Connecting Cross-Country

In the Merrick School District, Chatterton Elementary School thirdgrade students participated in a “Mystery Skype” call connecting with Dawn Clevenger’s fourthgrade class from Beebe Elementary School in

Several students from Merrick Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District were selected to participate in the All-County and/or Long Island String Festivals. All-County Jazz Band students include Marc Edayadi, Adam Gokcan, Corey Heinlein, Jasper Seabold and Luke Stabile. “They had to pass a very demanding audition and

demonstrate proficient improvisation,” said band teacher Richard Gilley. “The All-County Jazz Band is a very difficult ensemble to audition for because it is a small select group of only 20 students.” Students who were accepted into All-County Band include Hugh Cheung, Patrick Collins, Julia Oladipo, Julia Kirpalani and Dylan Torres. All-County Chorus

honorees include Jessica Corrigan, Danielle Finelli, Jason Goldstein, Sarah Multer, Jordan Novak, Michelle Serban, Bari Secondino and Mikaela Tucker. Tara Fuscillo and Jessica Zhang were accepted into the Long Island String Festival. Molly Quan was accepted into the orchestras for both All-County and the Long Island String Festival.

Students in the Meadowbrook Alternative Program in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District were treated to a hands-on art experience recently as the owner of Mom’s Ceramics brought in projects for them to decorate. “It breaks up the day for them, while also giving them an opportunity to fulfill their (necessary) art credit,” explained CONNECTING CROSS-COUNTRY - Chatterton Elementary School students Dr. Joseph Netto, school participated in a “Mystery Skype” call connecting with a class from McRae, Arkansas. psychologist. between a tile or bowl, painted glaze and then decorated with snowflakes. Once painted blue, they will be brought back to the ceramics store for a firing and then returned to students. The program was offered to MAP students through the Community Parent Center. “Giving them the opportunity to work with ceramics opens a new avenue of expression,” said Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center. “We hope that

exposing our students to this activity will spark an even greater interest in the field of art. Maybe a student will choose to pursue art in college or maybe one will become a sculptor, but they will all understand that they can show the world just what they can do using their hands to create expression through clay, paint and glaze.” Photo courtesy of: Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District

Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center juniors and seniors started to take the next step in their careers by attending the school’s annual college fair.

Representatives from 20 technical schools and colleges, including seven schools that hold articulation agreements with GC Tech, were on hand to discuss

programs and enrollment requirements. There were also representatives from the U.S. Army on hand for those students interested in a military career.

Hosting the Danes The MacArthur High School basketball team hosted a team of 35 players from Denmark’s Hjemly School, who competed in the annual Jeff Shaw Memorial Basketball Tournament held at MacArthur High School on December 3rd-4th. The tournament is held annually in remembrance of Jeff Shaw, a Levittown resident who lost his life on September 11th and whose children played basketball

for the Levittown School District. During the day, the students shadowed MacArthur students while attending classes. The visitors also stayed in the homes of the MacArthur High School players. Coach Eric Rubin explained that playing with American teams helps the Danish players improve their game. Many of the students are younger than the MacArthur students

and are not as advanced with their court skills. “The experience on the court for the Danish players is amazing,” Rubin said, “but pales in comparison to the experience off the court.” Rubin also noted that in spending time together, the visiting team and MacArthur players engaged in a valuable cross-cultural learning experience. “Each season, this experience is one of the highlights of the year,” Rubin added.

Bellmore students Kathryn Gabberty and Patrick Ingegno were firstand second-place winners, respectively, in Winthrop Avenue School’s annual fourth-grade spelling bee. Fourteen top studentspellers battled it out on the auditorium stage to claim the title of top speller, with teacher Marybeth Cammarata serving as moderator.

The competition proved difficult, when after more than 10 rounds and participants’ misspelling of “bargain” and “disappear,” Kathryn gave the correct answer and won the title of top speller. Both winners received a Barnes & Noble gift certificate for this outstanding accomplishment. Prior to the spelling bee, contests were held

in individual classrooms, and the two top spellers from each class were invited to participate in the competition. Winning the spelling bee came with a few tricks, as Kathryn disclosed that her parents tested her every evening. Patrick, on the other hand, noted that he visualizes a word for the correct spelling.

Donations Sought The Ambassador Program, a BellmoreMerrick Central High School District-wide, student-led think tank, has organized an upcoming day of service to be completed in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday in January. Beginning on December 14th, each grade is assigned specific items that will be collected, organized, packaged and donated to local shelters and other social services. The community is encouraged to donate as well. • Grade 7: marble

notebooks, pencils • Grade 8: folders, crayons • Grade 9: winter hats • Grade 10: gloves • Grade 11: children’s pajamas • Grade 12: adult pajamas On January 14th and 15th, students will utilize their physical education class time to package donated items into drawstring bags. “This will give us the opportunity for those who wish to volunteer to come in on [the following]

Saturday and travel to these organizations to distribute the items,” said Social Studies chairperson Robyn Einbinder. Created in March of 2014, student ambassadors from all four district high schools and two middle schools join together throughout the school year to address issues impacting the student body and surrounding community. They work closely with teachers and administrators to achieve district-wide goals, thus fostering the One Voice, One Message initiative.

Planting Roots Gardiners Avenue students and staff celebrated a momentous occasion with Levittown School District’s Central Office administrators and community residents during the school’s tree planting dedication. Student Council and class representatives cut the bright green ribbon

to commemorate the planting of “new roots” and the replacement of the school’s iconic trees taken down last year due to safety reasons. Principal Jared Vanderbeck told the students that the tree dedication is the start of a new beginning at Gardeners Avenue. “Like all

of our students, these trees are young, beginning to develop and are beginning to grow roots,” he said. “Like all of our students, these trees will grow tall and strong, blossom and branch off into different directions and develop deep lasting roots with Gardiners Avenue as their foundation.”

Celebrating Music performance is different from listening to music on the radio or iTunes. “Going to a live show is a very special experience,” she said. “Each show is a bit different every time.” At Shore Road, the musicians’ string quartet entertained students with its Broadway Beats Program, which highlighted famous Broadway hits, including “Annie,” “The Lion King,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and more. Select students were invited to accompany the quartet

with song and dance. At Charles A. Reinhard, the woodwind quartet’s circus theme brought to life Jean de Brunhoff’s story about Babar the Elephant growing up to be king of the realm. Babar’s story, as told by a professional mime, was intertwined with the music of Francis Poulenc. Students were also introduced to the music of Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Camille Saint-Saëns and Amilcare Ponchielli.

Louise Cassano of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce invited Northside music students to participate in the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. The young musicians delighted the hundreds of community members that evening with their joyful music and holiday spirit.

Taking on Art Eighth-grade students enrolled in art at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District traveled to New Windsor in upstate New York to explore Storm King Art Center. In three separate field trips on November 6th, 12th and 13th, students learned about bigger than life sculptures built into

the landscape as well as learned a variety of digital photography techniques. The students wandered the grounds of the art center, worked in groups to take photographs of the sculptures and experimented with forced perspective. “By going on three trips, students were able to break up into small groups to view the landscape

and sculptures at Storm King,” said art teacher Lisa Federici. “These field trips gave students the opportunity to travel to a place and experience art and sculpture in a way they might not have otherwise had the opportunity to do.” Students will display their photography at the TAKING ON ART - Merrick Avenue Middle School art students posed at Storm Art Expo at MAMS later in King Arts Center during a class trip.
