Heads or tails? That’s what determined the genetic traits of fictitious puppies at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Students in Amanda DiMonda’s sixthgrade class did a series of coin flips as part of a lesson on DNA and genetics. Each student had to create a puppy based on the coin flip result for

different traits including head, ear, nose and body shape, fur and eye color, tongue length, whiskers and gender. A flip of heads meant using the specified dominant trait, while tails was for the recessive trait. After completing their coin flips, students then had to draw their dog. Ms. DiMonda explained that the activity supported the science curriculum and

provided her class with an opportunity for hands-on exploration. As a follow-up assignment, students will examine their own traits and determine if their features are dominant or recessive. Later in their year, they will study why animals have certain traits as ways of adapting to their environments.

Sharing a Mission Student ambassadors from Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently collaborated on a presentation for the elementary school students in Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore and North Bellmore. Students spoke about the district’s community cupboard and encouraged

the elementary schools to come up with ways that they could be part of the mission to end hunger. “Students shared their roles as ambassadors, the work that they do in their individual school and districtwide, facts about poverty as well as what our current cupboard needs and is doing,” said Grand Avenue Assistant Principal Andrew Del Rosario. “The most exciting part

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Furthermore, musical concepts and skills including composition, melody, harmony, pattern recognition, playing in unison, rhythm counting and the identification of pitch were also reinforced. Students also learned about and tried their hands with alternate string instruments such as the viola, cello and bass.

Northside Elementary School students in Marlena Leung’s third-grade class visited the Levittown Memorial Education Center’s Outdoor Learning Center on November 28th to further students’ research abilities and explore animal behaviors. Facilitated by Outdoor Learning Center teacher Jessica Mills, the class focused on determining if animal groups or individuals are better when gathering and defending their food. Through two engaging outdoor activities, the students had the opportunity to put their predictions to the test. Using plastic toy food with numbers labeled on them to signify how long an animal would survive on the item, the students were identified as an animal group or an individual animal. For the first activity, the food was sorted into bins outside where the students competed to pick up the most food items to survive. Back in the classroom, the class discussed their findings and charted their data on a bar graph. For the second activity, the students STRINGS PROGRAM - Second-grade students at the Charles A. Anthony Scotto, one of Long Island’s most successful entrepreneurs, understands more than just business – he understands the importance of giving. He made it a point to mention that he loves work so much that he could wake up at 7 a.m. and work until midnight, and do it all again the next day without a problem. Anthony Scotto’s newest business venture, One North, a Mediterranean style restaurant located at the old Maine Maid Inn in Jericho, is nothing less than exquisite. This historical building sat empty for just about 10 years when, finally, local residents reached out to Mr. Scotto to ask if he was interested in renovating the building and opening a new business there. Two and a half years later, Mr. Scotto had it completely revamped, and it now looks better than ever! One North offers a unique and tasteful menu, which Mr.

Scotto assisted in creating. It has a modern décor, which was inspired by European coastal living. A mozzarella bar creates a cozy setting near the kitchen; beautiful private event rooms are available to rent out; and you’ll never be left cold on their patio, which holds multiple heaters and a luxurious fireplace. In the spirit of giving, Anthony Scotto donated $75,000 from his first week in business at the new location to the following charitable organizations: Heroes To Heroes Foundation, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. He knows what it means to struggle and feels that everyone has a duty to help the less fortunate. It was nothing less than obvious, upon speaking about helping those in need with Mr. Scotto, that he truly has a generous heart. After all, money can come and go, but generosity from one to another can never be taken away.

Undefeated Levittown Public School’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School’s eighthgrade football team, the Seahawks, entered the 2017 season with a goal for ending their middle school careers undefeated. They recently accomplished their mission with their final win against Garden City. Leading up to their final game, the Seahawks had left an impression on opposing teams. They defeated teams including Wantagh, Bethpage, Woodland, Clarke, Manhasset, Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue. During the final game against Garden City, the players showed confidence

and control, scoring the game’s first touchdown. Late in the first quarter, with the ball on the five yard line, it looked like Garden City would tie the score. Instead, the Seahawks’ defense made four tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a cumulative loss of 20 yards. The team added two additional rushing touchdowns in the second half to make the final score 20-0. The game was capped off when the Seahawks’ defense recovered a Garden City fumble in the final quarter of action, and then marched down to the Garden City one yard line before taking a knee in the

final minute. The final win was a complete team effort and a great win, as they had this game in mind since the season began. “This was a special group with an incredible amount of depth,” said coach Brian Luball. “Every one of them were not only good players, but great kids. It was a pleasure to coach them and I look forward to their continued success at MacArthur High School.” “They deserved the success that they achieved,” added coach Bill Kind. “From the first day, they had tireless work ethic and a team-first attitude.”

Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

On December 7th, visitors were invited to step right up - and into - the 30 stations at the Art Expo at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, which encouraged interaction more than observation. “Many facets of the field were represented,” said art teacher and expo organizer Heather Lohr. “Students touched on every type of art style from the more traditional drawing, painting, sculpture and architecture to new media such as animation and design.” Booth setups included a walk-in pinhole camera, a giant animation reel called a zoetrope, a sculpture bar set, an oversized slide tile puzzle and giant building blocks. “Through this process, they were made aware of not just how, but why art is created,” said art teacher and expo organizer Michael Goldberg. “All hopefully left the event inspired with the knowledge that art is all around us.” Visitors were also able to “zen out” in the Japaneseinspired mindfulness tent. The creative juices were overflowing.

To expand the mission of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Community Cupboard, they paired with the community to fill Thanksgiving baskets for the local families who utilize the food pantry. “With the One Voice, One Message theme, we realized that we wanted to centralize the effort,” said Catrina Christensen, coordinator of the district’s afterschool Twilight Program and Community Cupboard organizer. “There was a greater need this year than in years past. Custodians retrieved goods from each school and delivered them to the central administration building. An assembly line commenced on November 20th, with students making baskets and bags. Additionally, the students from Mepham’s Leo Club and MAP’s Key Club baked approximately 100 pumpkin pies. “We received many generous donations, including one individual

that gave us enough to provide every family with a gift certificate to purchase a turkey and another that gave actual turkeys,” said Meadowbrook Alternative Program nurse and Community Cupboard organizer Darlene Boden. On Nov. 21, local families picked up the baskets. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bollettieri and MAP Principal Susan Ellinghaus volunteered to assist with the distribution. “I cannot believe how blessed I am to work in a district such as ours,” said Ellinghaus. “We do not give lip service. In Bellmore-Merrick we truly walk the walk. We take care of our own.”

Acting to the Test Eighth-grade students in the Levittown Public School’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School’s Respect and Responsibility, Integrity, Safety, Staying Healthy and Empathy Program recently put their acting skills to the test through the school’s pushin program “Middle School 101.” Students involved in the RISE program, also known as junior leaders, strive to give the school’s sixthgraders a smooth transition into life as a middle school student. “Middle School 101” allows support staff to visit sixth-grade classes to discuss all aspects of

middle school life. Under the guidance of advisors social worker Noreen Williams and guidance counselors Michelle Lyons and Michelle Steward, the eighth-graders participate in weekly round table discussions throughout the program on how to properly communicate to the sixth-graders about important topics such as handling conflicts, bullying situations, spreading kindness and more. To further the conversation and remind students to be mindful of their actions, the eighthgraders decided to use

technology to get their messages across. With the help of the school’s movie making club advisor Nectaria Kourkoumelis, the students filmed various skits using a green screen to share with the sixthgraders. The skits tackled cyberbullying, roasting others, how a bystander can transform into an upstander and how to be courteous to others every day. “They are very engaged in it,” said Williams. “We try to make them aware of what is going on outside of themselves and it has been great having these conversations with them.”

The notes were high and spirits were bright as the five premiere choral groups from within the BellmoreCentral High School District performed in the vocal music showcase on November 29th. Included in the performance were the John F. Kennedy High School Variety Choir, Merrick Avenue Middle School’s Word of Mouth, Grand Avenue Middle School’s Grand Voices, Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Pirate Radio and Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Crescendo. The evening concluded

with a combined finale, in which students from the elementary component districts were invited to sing with the upperclassmen. “Events like this truly reflect the ‘One Voice, One Message’ theme that resonates throughout our district,” said Cheryl Fontana, district director of the fine & performing arts. Donations were collected at the door to the Sanford H. Calhoun High School auditorium for the district’s food pantry, the Community Cupboard.

Red Carpet Readers Levy Lakeside School recently transformed into Hollywood for this year’s Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) celebration. Lakeside’s theme “Roll Out the Red Carpet for Books,” inspired several fun and engaging, Hollywoodthemed activities to encourage students to read, while involving parents and other special people to help foster this love for reading. For the kickoff, the students participated in

a movie medley assembly highlighting books that became movies! Oscar ballots were given to each student to fill out for every night of reading during PARP week. Completed Oscars were turned in for an opportunity to sign a star on the Lakeside Walk of Fame. Additionally; “mystery” star readers from the Lakeside staff visited the classrooms, students dressed up to walk to red carpet for books, and a true star, Caldecott winning author and illustrator,

Laura Vaccaro Seeger presented to every grade. The Levy Lakeside annual Community Read Aloud culminated the festive week with prominent members of the school and community stopping by to share books and their love of reading with the Levy Lakeside students. PARP week at Levy Lakeside left a lasting impression on the Hollywood Reading Stars who shined bright with their excitement and enthusiasm for reading!

Giving Back Northside Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools, recently held its traditional Thanksgiving food drive. Students, families and teachers throughout the school donated hundreds of assorted food items to help Northside families in need during the holiday.

The staff contributed monetary donations to purchase gift cards at local food stores for turkeys, while third-grade teacher Theresa Heaney and her students sorted the various cans, bags and boxes of food. In addition to the students, families and

teachers who made a difference, the success of the Thanksgiving food drive was also due to the efforts of head custodian Bob Mehm, school nurse Cara Rutzel, social worker Samantha Romano and Principal Frank Mortillaro.

Pilgrim Lifestyle Fifth-graders in Desiree Valentine’s class at Abbey Lane Elementary School recently traveled back in time to 1620 and 1621 as part of a Thanksgiving lesson. Students were given the

identity of a pilgrim and collaborated in teams to make decisions as they faced the same challenges of the Pilgrims. For their Thanksgiving celebration, the students made bread with a bread

machine in the school and butter. A newly developed appreciation for the history of Thanksgiving was apparent in the room as students reflected on their experiences.

Third-graders in Arlene Berman’s and Anne Sallustro’s classes at Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District shared their narrative writings with peers and parents during a Personal Narrative Celebration.

For the past couple of months, the students have studied the stages of the writing process. After writing down experiences that are important to them, called narrative writing, the stories were then published in a bound book and shared. Many of

the students wrote about trips to Disneyland or to Lake George, while others wrote about school and family experiences. “This was a culmination of weeks of work,” Ms. Sallustro said. “We are very excited about the students’ writing.”

Math as Movement Jumping around in the classroom is now a regular occurrence and a tool for learning math at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore. The district recently adopted the Math & Movement program, a kinesthetic and multisensory approach to teaching math, which incorporates exercise and is designed to encourage students to practice math facts. Colorful floor mats allow students to jump and move as they

solve math problems and allow for a rich variety of learning modalities (visual, auditory, motor and kinesthetic) when they practice their math facts and equations. Founder Suzy Koontz visited the district on December 1st for development workshops with teachers and administrators, followed by a kickoff assembly with students. “The goal is to have math as a tool,” Koontz said. “The program incorporates more physical education and purposeful

movement to counteract sitting and to activate the brain. Most of all, the program makes learning fun.” During the assembly, students in grades K-2 performed jumping jacks while counting to 30, added numbers on the mats and simulated hitting a baseball while counting in threes. The program will be utilized in classrooms, as well as during physical education classes, explained Principal Patricia Castine.

Strong Numbers parents played several games like Straw Wars and Race to 50, which focused on skills such as measurement, counting and addition. All participants went home with a bag full of the games they played, plus other materials that they could use to help foster learning at home.

“This gave our parents an opportunity to feel connected to their child’s learning,” said Saw Mill Road Elementary School kindergarten teacher Soula Sotirakos, who organized the event. “These fun evenings are meant to bring the community together in a fun academic way.”

Floating Their Boats As part of a science lesson on buoyancy, fourth-graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District made boats and tested their durability. Students in Stacey Theodore’s class worked in groups and designed boats

using aluminum foil. They placed their creations in pans of water and added pennies until it sank. The winning boat held 64 coins. The project was led by student-teacher Danielle Buckley, who is in the education program at Adelphi University. It

fostered creativity and collaboration while reinforcing problemsolving and critical thinking skills. The fourth-graders enjoyed challenging themselves to build the strongest boats.
