isdom Lane Middle School Peer Buddies gathered in the cafeteria to prepare decorations for the 24th Annual Long Island Festival of Trees. It was an excellent opportunity for developmentally disabled students to create decorations for a beneficial cause with their typical peers. Held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City on December 1st, this event helped benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau.

In line with a longstanding school tradition, Division Avenue High School’s top 22 achieving seniors of the Class of 2014 were invited to attend the annual Blue and Silver Luncheon. Also in attendance were Superintendent of Schools James J. Grossane, members of the district’s administration and Board of Education, and school

counselors. Prior to a delicious catered meal, the students were asked to introduce themselves, state their choice of college and potential major, describe their most memorable high school moment, and explain what they will miss most about Division Avenue High School. Many of the guests of honor will pursue careers in the

sciences and engineering. In her opening remarks, Principal Joan Lorelli congratulated the students on their achievements and asked them to think about their definition of a leader. She encouraged the seniors, in order to become adult leaders, to be problem-solvers, kind, compassionate and confident, to continue to speak out against what is

wrong, and to have a sense of humor. “I believe you will continue to be high achievers, great students and future leaders,” she said. Students were also offered the opportunity to visit an in-school Native American “museum,” where they were able to handle authentic artifacts and learn of their historical importance. Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

Thanks to the efforts of the Division Avenue High School student council, 50 Levittown families will benefit from this year’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. Under the direction of advisors Lynn Castellano, Gerard Marzigliano and Jeffrey Stotsky, the

students started their collection efforts in the front of local supermarkets during the summer and by calling private donors. One student council member’s parent donated a U-Haul truck to deliver the food and the students collected an additional $1,820 in food store gift cards.

“This has been an overwhelming response,” advisor Lynn Castellano said. “It took a core of students six hours just to box the donations.. There will be many Levittown families who will benefit from the labor of these generous students and donors.”

Decking The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,

completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

Mural Presentation On November 22nd, the Art Club at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District presented a student-made mural of scenes from The Nutcracker to the Eglevsky Ballet Company of Long Island, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching Long Island and its surrounding communities through the presentation and training of ballet. Woodland Art Club adviser Dr. John Healy said

that last spring, he asked his students if there were any organizations that they or their parents were affiliated with that would be receptive of a mural. Current seventh-grade student Leah Von Ohlen, a dancer at Eglevsky Ballet, suggested Woodland create a mural for Eglevsky Ballet. Students completed the artwork in November. Previous murals have been completed for other companies and organizations, including

the Nassau County Legislature, American Airlines and the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island. Laszlo Berdo, artistic director of the Eglevsky Ballet Company, Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves and Woodland Middle School Principal James Lethbridge were on hand for the unveiling of the mural.

Students at Bowling Green and Parkway elementary schools in the East Meadow School District collected nonperishable food items throughout November for annual food drives at their respective schools this Thanksgiving season. Bowling Green fifthgrade teacher Richard Santer, who also serves as adviser of the Bowling

Green K-Kids club, said club members spearheaded the food drive. Through the generosity of students, a variety of canned goods, boxed pasta and other items were collected. Students prepared gift bags of food, which were donated to six families. This year, Parkway Elementary collaborated with Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger

relief organization, on a “Strike Out Hunger” food drive for Long Island families. Students donated various canned goods, pastas, cereals and other items to help those who are in need this holiday season. This was the school’s first year working with Island Harvest, and one which students and faculty said they will always remember.

Division Avenue High School senior Jason Orellana has been selected as one of 2,200 national semifinalists in the 2014 Coca-Cola Scholars Program for having demonstrated leadership, academic achievement and commitment to the community. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is one of the nation’s most recognized corporate scholarship sponsors; more than 4,250 students have benefited from approximately $38 million in college scholarship awards. Jason is president of the school’s chapter of the World Language Honor Society and vice president

and treasurer of Key Club. He is also secretary of the Class of 2014 and treasurer of the National Honor Society. Apart from taking Advanced Placement courses and participating in the school’s clubs and organizations, Jason serves as a minister and secretary of the Segunda Iglesia Pentecostal Betsaida church in Levittown. In hearing about his selection as a semifinalist, Jason said, “This is so exciting. I am grateful for the teachers who helped to shape the person I am today, especially my guidance counselor Lynn Castellano, who has been there to guide me through the toughest decisions.”

In April, a National Selection Committee representing outstanding leaders in business, government, education and the arts will invite 250 finalists to Atlanta for personal interviews. Fifty students will then be designated as National Scholars and receive awards of $20,000 for college. In addition, 200 students will be designated as Regional Scholars and receive awards of $10,000 for college. The Levittown School District congratulates Jason on this academic achievement and wishes him continued success in the competition.

Members of the World Language Honor Society at Division Avenue High School in the Levittown School District, in conjunction with the English as a Second Language department, hosted a Thanksgiving luncheon for the district’s English language learners from Jonas E. Claps Career and Technical Center culinary students prepared and served a traditional American feast of turkey, stuffing, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, salad and berry pie. In addition, the ELL students individually spoke about immigrating to the U.S. In her remarks to the ELL students, Division Avenue Principal Joan Lorelli said, “We hope you will embrace our Thanksgiving traditions as part of your new culture.”

Smoke And Mirrors The W.T. Clarke High School Drama Club in the East Meadow School District presented two riveting performances of its drama production Smoke And Mirrors on November 22nd and 23rd. The production, a collection of one-act plays, included performances of “The Sequel” and “His Return” by Percival Wilde, “Fourteen” by Alice Gerstenberg, “Porcelain

and Pink” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “A Matter of Husbands” by Ferenc Molnar and “The Game” by Louise Bryant. Both performances were well-attended and drew rave reviews from members of the community and school district. W.T. Clarke High School’s “Smoke and Mirrors” will be remembered for years to come.
