uring the week of Thanksgiving, 35 English language learners enrolled in the Levittown Public School District were treated to a special feast prepared and served by culinary students of Gerard R. Claps Career and Technical Center at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Members of the MacArthur High School World Language Honor Society accompanied the students and shared their Thanksgiving experiences and favorite holiday foods.

My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.
The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

while clearing out leaves in her garden. Hearing pleas for help and crying, Luke emerged from his home and sprang into action upon seeing his neighbor in distress. He put on the fire rescue vest that he crafted with his dad and grabbed the portable home phone, replete with the “fire rescue” phone number sticker on the back. Then, Luke ran to the victim, swatting at the angry insects without regard for his own safety. Upon discovering that his portable home phone was beyond its transmission range, he summoned another neighbor to call the “fire rescue” telephone number. Shortly thereafter, the victim, who had sustained a broken wrist in addition to the potentially deadly wasp stings, was transported to the hospital. “It is astounding that an eight-year-old boy would have the ‘cool under fire’ qualities of an adult hero in responding to a very serious emergency,”

The Rockville Tudor, Rockville Centre’s first four-story luxury apartment building and one of the first on Long Island to have an elevator, has reached a milestone of 85 years in the Village. Mayor Francis X. Murray will commemorate the special anniversary with current residents of the Tudor on Friday, December 12th at 1 p.m. “Since 1929 the historic Rockville Tudor has been home to thousands of families and businesses,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray. “It’s been the home of the rich and famous and served as a communications headquarter during World War II. I am proud of its rich heritage and the fact that it remains a vital part of our Village historical heritage after 85 years.” Over its 85-year history, the Rockville Tudor has

The Tudor stood fast, providing peace of mind during this traumatic time. Following the war, The Tudor opened its doors to returning veterans giving them a chance to start anew. The Rockville Tudor Corporation embarked on a full-scale capital improvement plan to preserve and restore the historic integrity of the building for all shareholders and the Village, including the replacement of the roof and windows, restoration of the Tudor façade and installation of six new stained glass windows completing the original Twelve.
The Corporation capped off over $2.5 million in capital improvements with lobby enhancements that restore the walls, ceilings, moldings and fireplace as well as replacing furniture to capture historic period significance and create a beautiful focal point for building residents and visitors. Recently, the Village of Rockville Centre was featured in both Newsday and the New York Times for being one of the most desirable villages to live, work and play. Many residents in the articles cited the wide range of housing options in the Village and its proximity to the train station and downtown as being a major plus. The Rockville Tudor is one of the housing options that makes Rockville Centre a desirable place to reside.

Landmark Anniversary

Students at John F. Kennedy High School, in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, received a special visit on November 26th when they welcomed back Stephanie Hammerman to speak to them about overcoming challenges. Hammerman, a 2007 graduate of JFK High School, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after her birth, a condition
that causes difficulty with motor skills such as walking, getting dressed or picking up objects. Now in her mid-twenties, Hammerman has worked her way through graduate school and is one of the first women with cerebral palsy to participate in CrossFit competitions and attain CrossFit Level 2 Certification. Mixing humor with an approachable demeanor,

Inspiring Message Hammerman discussed her life’s struggles and amazing accomplishments while a college student at Lynn University in Florida, where she was first introduced to CrossFit trainers. Taste Of Thanksgiving
During the week of Thanksgiving, 35 English language learners enrolled in the Levittown Public School District were treated to a special feast prepared and served by culinary students of Gerard R. Claps Career and Technical Center at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Members of the MacArthur High School World Language Honor Society accompanied the students and shared their Thanksgiving experiences and favorite holiday foods with the English language
learners. The purpose of the event, held annually, was to expose the non-native students to the essence of this American holiday. The ELL students enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving
feast including turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and corn, and they each delivered a speech about their experiences in America during the meal.

Opening Bell Division Avenue High School student Bailey Gribben was invited to ring the opening bell at NASDAQ in Times Square with members of the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Gribben was the 2013 CTF ambassador, an organization that takes a comprehensive approach to improving the lives of those who are affected with neurofibromatosis, a disorder that causes the growth of tumors along various nerve types, the enlargement and deformation of bones, curvature of the spine and the growth of tumors on
the brain, cranial nerves and spinal cord. To date, Gribben, who also battles the disorder, has raised $75 thousand dollars for the CTF. “Through his bravery and determination, Bailey has proven to be an inspiration to the Division Avenue High School Levittown community,” Principal Joan Lorelli said. In November, Bailey addressed the audience at the CTF Gala fundraiser at the Plaza Hotel in New York City and introduced the 2014 ambassador. During the gala, $1.3 million was raised. Jets kicker Nick Folk also
invited Bailey to attend a recent game and pledged to make a donation to CTF every time he scored a field goal. To honor the strength and courage of Bailey’s battle with NF last year, the Division Avenue High School community designated Nov. 1, 2013 as Bailey Gribben Day, and school organizations held individual fundraising efforts on his behalf. Kindergarten students at Meadowbrook Elementary School recently participated in a Thanksgiving celebration in recognition of the
holiday season. Students recited lines describing the events, which led up to the first Thanksgiving. In addition, dressed
in costumes reflective of the Native Americans and Pilgrims, students sang songs and performed the “turkey wobble” dance.
Setting Yourself Apart Levittown’s Division Avenue High School students learned that setting themselves apart from others during college and job interviews is the key to being accepted. During a presentation by Hempstead Town Councilman and business owner Gary Hudes, classes learned that dress, eye contact, handshakes and having information about the college or job for which
they are interviewing can make a big difference in the outcome. “Every interview should be treated as the most important in your life,” Hudes said. Hudes, who owns a successful jewelry business, told the students that skills learned on the job are never menial and may assist in formulating a future career. He encouraged the students

performance and to offer tips on musical style. “The personal dialogue with Mr. Mathews gave our students a better understanding of how the music industry works,” LIHSA Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth said of the class. “He explained to them from firsthand experience that, although a career in music can be incredibly rewarding, it can also be difficult to navigate.” Following the class, Mr. Mathews treated the LIHSA campus to an exclusive acoustic performance including music from his Hotel Party Tour. Afterwards, the star expressed how wonderful it was to have such an intimate audience with
the young musicians. He enjoyed his visit so much that he invited the entire school to join him at a local concert later that week. Dr. Hepworth explained that unique opportunities like Master Classes are among the many reasons a LIHSA education is invaluable. “Students engaging with a working artist to learn the nuances of the industry makes for a memorable experience and enhances their professional appreciation,” he said. “What we offer at the LIHSA campus empowers our students to better themselves and to continue to strive for success.”
This Thanksgiving, Forest Lake Elementary School special education teacher Christine Torrellas donned a Mother Goose costume and marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The annual trek through the streets of Manhattan has been a family tradition for the past 14 years. Torrellas’ sister previously worked for
Macy’s and was responsible for managing the annual televised event. Torrellas used her family ties to start marching and has dressed as a banana, a piece of cake and a clown. For the past six years, Torrellas has taken on the persona of Mother Goose, a character that is very close to her heart. “I am very drawn to that very important part

Professional musician and America’s Got Talent Finalist Taylor Mathews recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) to conduct a Master Class. Mr. Mathews personally coached many of the students on their individual performances during this intimate learning opportunity. Taking a cue from Mr. Mathews’ own path to stardom, many of the LIHSA students performed a self-selected song for the renowned singersongwriter, who offered constructive criticism, feedback and advice. Mr. Mathews worked with the students to improve the quality of his or her

Fiddler On The Roof Under the direction of Lisa Levenberg, MacArthur High School’s talented cast and crew drew a packed house for opening night of the epic musical Fiddler On The Roof. After a successful preview performance for senior citizens, the 100-member cast, crew and pit orchestra entertained audiences with their rendition of Joseph Stein’s book based on the Sholem Aleichem stories, with original music and lyrics by Jerry Block and Sheldon Harnick.
Set in the Pale of Imperial Russia in 1905, “Fiddler on the Roof” tells the tale of Tevye (played by Ted Fiber), the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family’s Jewish traditions while outside influences encroach on their lives. Tevye’s sharp-tongued wife Golde (Bridget Iaboni) and five daughters (Nicole Cevetello, Audra Gale, Mackenzie Zorn, Michelle Shapiro and Victoria DiMartino) deliver a performance with matchmaker Yente (Laura
Papayannakos) that holds true to the original New York stage production by Jerome Robbins. Under the direction of conductor Iris Winter, the pit orchestra delivered such classics including If I Were A Rich Man, Matchmaker, Matchmaker and L’Chaim.
