Dance Clinic for Kids The Mepham High School varsity kickline team hosted its second dance clinic for children in the community ages 5 to 13 on November 21st at Brookside. More than 80 girls from Bellmore-Merrick participated in the clinic. The girls were divided into
groups, each instructed by members of the kickline team. While working with their groups, the girls were taught dance technique as well as choreography that included jazz, hip-hop, kick and pom. Bellmore Bagel Cafe donated a bagel breakfast for all of the participants.

I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e ad opt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own
name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,
include playing video games and streaming on Twitch. Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good. After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. Fifth-grade students in Patrick Meehan’s science class at East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown examined the internal and external structure of crawfish during a dissection class. Dressed in aprons, goggles and gloves, students delved into
the measurement, classification and structure of the bright red crustaceans as part of a science unit about arthropod structure, function and environment. Prior to dissecting the creatures, the students learned about their habitat, eating habits and

Crawfish Study life span, as well as the sex of their subjects. They also measured parts of the crawfish, such as the mitten, using the metric system. “We are not just taking apart the crawfish, we are making observations,” Mr. Meehan said.
Members of Winthrop Avenue School’s Student Advisory Council collected non-perishable food items and packed Thanksgiving baskets for local families in need of assistance prior to the holiday. Holiday gift
cards also accompanied the baskets and were donated by the Bellmore Lions Club. Principal Sally Curto explained that the students spearheaded the endeavor and decorated and hung

Levittown’s John Genzale, a studentmusician from Division Avenue High School, performed in the 2015 AllNational Honor Ensemble for Mixed Choir (Bass 1) on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee on October 28th.
Sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, John was one of just 68 students from New York State and 22 students from Nassau County to be selected to perform with the nation’s top high school musicians at this historic venue. Looking back at the
experience, John said the Grand Ole Opry House was not what he expected. “It’s wasn’t as massive as I thought it would be,” he said. “It was much smaller and more intimate.” John said the AllNationals was a unique experience, one that allowed him to be akin with music history. During his visit, he not only participated in rehearsals under the baton of the nation’s leaders in music education, but met and affiliated with some of the top high school musicians from across the country. John is a senior and is planning to attend college in the fall. He said he will audition at a number of music schools, but will most likely pursue a career in the publishing field. Levittown Foreign Language Curriculum Associate Michele Ortiz said the purpose of the annual event is to expose non-native students, some who have lived in the country for a short period of time, to this cherished American holiday.
“For some of the students, it is the first time to eat a Thanksgiving meal,” Ms. Ortiz said. The ENL students also gave a presentation highlighting key terms in their language and asked volunteers to repeat key phrases. In addition, select ENL students also described holidays in their own countries and compared them to American holidays.

Favorites Drumsticks, mash potatoes, green beans and pumpkin pie are the favorite parts of the Thanksgiving meal for Abbey Lane Elementary School firstgraders in Levittown. Their preferences were noted in the creation of a holiday 3D book, created with the help of parents, grandparents and caregivers prior to the holiday.
The students first studied the pilgrims while making comparisons about their lives to America’s first immigrants. Each first-grade class also made a book about the first Thanksgiving, with each student decorating their own page of the book. The unit culminated with the 3D book activity. After listening to the

A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip
to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.
Talent, indeed. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. Faculty advisors for the French Honor Society Betsy Siegelaub and A World of Difference club advisor Josephine Parlagreco were instrumental in organizing the effort after students Melissa Rosenberg, Kristina Schwab and Kelsey White emailed Siegelaub, asking how they could raise awareness after the Paris attacks. “I felt that the most meaningful yet simple and feasible activity was to invite the school to wear the flag colors and then
take a picture to document it,” Siegelaub explained. John F. Kennedy High School athlete Alexis Tillman was the only student in Nassau County to be selected as a Wendy’s High School Heisman state winner. “She is a fierce competitor and was the
Cross Country team’s CoCaptain and MVP,” said head girls’ varsity cross country coach and English teacher Michael P. Cooney. “Alexis won All-Conference and All-County this season and was a wonderful role model for the team not
only while running on the course but inside the classroom as well.” The criteria for this award is being a high school senior who is dedicated to learning, leading and performing in their school and community. “Lexie has done all three- she has been named captain, she strives for excellence with her Advanced Science Research and has also earned All-County honors,” said cross country coach Chris Mammone. “She is extremely determined and a very driven athlete.” State winners earn $1,000 for their school in their name, in addition to Wendy’s gift cards. Diabetes Awareness In November, Lee Road Elementary School students and staff in Levittown celebrated Diabetes Awareness Month. Each day, students
Marissa Paredes and Ethan Hernandez, who both have the disease, read morning announcements, which served to inform and educate their peers about
the effects of diabetes. During a school spirit day, students also dressed in blue to bring awareness to the disease.
Top Ranked The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that the Division Avenue High School Competitive Marching Band, under the direction of Michael Bastone, placed second in the Small School 3 Division in New York State during the New York State Field Band Championships, held at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome in November. This is a great improvement over last
year’s performance when the band received a fifthplace designation. For the past several months, the band led by student drum majors Brandon Hoyt, Michael Mahoney and color guard captain Teresa Neri have performed a high-paced and highly visual show called “Puppet Master,” inspired by Camille SaintSaëns’ “Carnival of the Animals” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of
the Opera.” Vince D’Ulisse, curriculum associate for music, stated the district administration is thrilled about the band’s performance in the state championship. “I want to extend special thanks to Mr. Bastone and the marching band staff and, of course, the students who worked tirelessly to put forth such a high caliber show.”

Turkey Bowl The Student Government and the Gay Straight Alliance clubs at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District cosponsored this year’s six-on-six flag football tournament that took place in late November. Ten teams participated in the first annual Turkey Bowl and raised $750 for the You Can Play Project, an organization that aims to provide equal opportunities and respect for all athletes, regardless of their sexual orientation. They want to reinforce the idea that competitions should only be judged on an athlete’s ability and performance. Also, they
aim to emphasize the fact that a team should create a safe and comfortable environment for an athlete to practice and succeed. The You Can Play Project is dedicated to ensuring all athletes the opportunity to participate freely in the sports they love with zero tolerance for discrimination. The Turkey Bowl kicked off with a Powder Puff game between the Kickline and Cheerleading teams. The Athletics Coordinator Mr. Papach and Physical Education teacher Ms. Cipolla officiated the game. After some intense play the cheerleaders came out on top. The rest of the Turkey Bowl games consisted of two, five-minute halves
with a one-minute halftime. The boys who participated played hard throughout the afternoon; however, only one team could be victorious. After three hard rounds, The Destroyers, led by juniors Alex Deane and Ryder Lampert, proved to be the best. Student Government and the Gay Straight Alliance would like to thank all who came to participate and contribute to the You Can Play Project. It was a successful day for all involved and the organizations are already looking forward to having an even better Turkey Bowl next year.

Trotting for Thanksgiving In the East Meadow School District, Parkway Elementary School students participated in a Turkey Trot in honor of staying healthy this holiday season.
Students trained for the trot by increasing their running time during each gym class. On the day of the event, students gathered with their personalized running bibs
to run 12 minutes around the building. In addition, members of the Parkway PTA cheered the students on by hydrating them with cups of water as they ran.

Chatterton Gives Back In the Merrick School District, Chatterton Elementary School students and faculty donated non-perishable food and paper goods to local families in the area. Members of Chatterton’s
