n the Merrick School District, the Birch School’s Students Against Destructive Decision club packaged 35 boxes of food for the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. All students, teachers, administrators and faculty were asked to donate canned goods or nonperishable food items including pasta, soup, vegetables, jars of sauce, chicken broth and stuffing to the SADD club’s Thanksgiving food drive. Evening of Excellence Community members, staff and students were recognized during the East Meadow Board of Education communication meeting on November 17th. Among them, the board honored Gerald Caldera for his service in World War II; Woodland Middle School for receiving the “Inviting School” award from the International Alliance for Invitational Education

(IAIE); and sixth- through eighth-graders from both Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools for being named “Terrific Kids.” During this celebratory meeting, the violin, flute and brass ensembles from Woodland Middle School performed for members of the board of education, administration, faculty and community. with the honoring of East Meadow resident Caldera, who served during WWII in the European Theater of Operations as part of the Third Army under General George Patton, receiving the Distinguished Service Award, a recognition bestowed by the district’s board of education to honor veterans in the

East Meadow School District administrators, teachers and staff assembled on November 8th to participate in workshops led by academic professionals and district faculty during Superintendent’s Conference Day. Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo commended the instructional staff for their hard work during the beginning of the school year and their continued effort to give their best to

the children of the district. Grouped according to subject area, educators attended workshops modeled after this year’s theme, “Planning with a Purpose: A Deep Dive into Curriculum, Part II,” designed to emphasize the importance of education and provide educators with effective teaching strategies for student success. Teachers collaborated to learn new strategies, methods and tools for higher student engagement in the

classroom. Among the workshops educators attended included grade level collaboration meetings, STEAM – science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics – learning platforms, writing standards, designing curriculum maps, 21st century learning classrooms, Microsoft Office 365 training and scope and sequence in areas of business, technology, and family and consumer science.

The Wantagh School District music department is proud to announce that six student-musicians were selected by the Long Island String Festival Association to participate in the intermediate and secondary festivals. High school student and violinist Nina Inayan

attended the secondary festival held at Munsey Park Elementary School on November 18th-20th. Wantagh Middle School cellists Zachary Cespedes and Margaret Gates will attend the intermediate festival to be held at Uniondale High School March 3rd through 5th.

In addition, Wantagh Elementary School student Isabella Astaiza, Mandalay Elementary School student Patrick Iskander and Forest Lake Elementary School student Madeline Rose, who play the viola, will also attend the intermediate festival.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Holiday Cheer in Hempstead It’s that time of year again where Jack Frost is nipping at your nose, and there’s no better way to kick off the holiday season than with the Town of Hempstead. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has everyone on the guest list, and he’s checked it twice, for the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree, Hanukkah Menorah and Kwanzaa Kinara. The celebration will take place at Town Hall Plaza on December 13th at 4 p.m. The ceremony will feature a special guest from the North Pole; Santa Claus is coming to Hempstead Town! Although his reindeer are busy preparing for their flight, Santa will still be riding in style on an antique fire truck. To help spread some holiday cheer, the Jackson Main Elementary School Chorus

and other choruses will be singing holiday favorites. “The holiday season is a wonderful time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the upcoming one,” said Santino. “It is truly exciting to celebrate the tremendous generosity that is all around us.” Hempstead Town officials have symbolized the spirit of giving by partnering with CSEA Local 880 and the Salvation Army to sponsor its annual Angel Tree Donation drive in an effort to help economically disadvantaged children during the holidays. Those attending the ceremony will have an opportunity to donate an unwrapped toy to the cause. Hempstead Town’s Department of Highways will be collecting toys through December 12th. Hempstead Town’s Animal Shelter will be

joining in on the festivities along with a few of their furry friends. Volunteers from the shelter will also be on hand to answer any questions about adoption while the playful pups enjoy a meet-and-greet with holiday merrymakers. “Join us for a funfilled celebration of holiday festivities,” concluded Santino. “This time of year is about togetherness, and there’s no better community than Hempstead Town to ring in the holiday season.” In case of inclement weather on the day of the event, the ceremony will be moved indoors, inside the Town Hall Lobby. Hempstead Town Hall is located at One Washington Street in Hempstead Village, between Peninsula Blvd. and Front Street.

Hugh Cheung, a ninthgrader at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, is among the 84 students this year selected as a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics. This designation grants

him acceptance into the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students to pursue mathematics and mathematical science applications. “Hugh has been a tremendous asset to our classroom from the start

of the school year,” said his math teacher Kerri Andree. “He brings great insight to our lessons and is constantly searching for a deeper understanding of mathematics. It is a pleasure to help guide a student, such as Hugh, that clearly enjoys and appreciates his education. He has a promising future in mathematics and we are all very proud of him and his accomplishments.” The Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students is one of the most competitive programs in the nation. Learning to Prep and knowledge. Prior to the holiday, the seventh-grade students worked in teams to prepare side dishes, which included sweet potato fries, spinach crescent rolls, corn muffins, cranberry sauce and an apple cobbler with

oatmeal topping. After the dishes were prepared, the students learned to properly set a holiday table. They also tasted their delicious meal and took the time to share that for which they are thankful.

Forest Lake Elementary School students in Wantagh received some important visitors in celebration of Veterans Day. During a program

to commemorate this important day, relatives of third-grade students shared artifacts and memorabilia of their time in the military and answered questions about

their experiences, bringing to life what it is like to serve this nation. In addition, the students made cards for the veterans who live at the Northport VA Medical Center.

Students Salute First-grade students in Maryjo Bergersen’s class at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in Levittown saluted veterans in honor of Veterans Day. The children discussed why this special day is observed, what it means

to be an American and the importance of the American flag. They also used the internet to explore some very informative sites on these topics. Students brought photos to class of veterans they know and pictures of family

members who served or are currently serving the country from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and Merchant Marines. In addition, the students drew pictures and made cards thanking local veterans for their sacrifices and service.

Quidditch in the House A fictional sport has come to life at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, as students are playing Quidditch in the physical education classes. The competitive sport from the “Harry Potter” movies, which uses scoops, hoops, puffy balls and brooms, has the entire school competing

for points. Students in each class are broken down into four teams, or houses, and in each game, every member of a team is assigned a specific task. There are shooters, goalies, taggers, rescuers and seekers, and the latter are assigned to find golden snitches (yellow feathers) hidden around the gymnasium. Physical education

teacher Michael Weiner said this is the school’s first time playing Quidditch, noting that it combines exercise, teamwork and fun all into one activity. It has also energized students throughout the school, he said, as they wore their teams’ colors, made posters and eagerly awaited the daily announcement of the scores.

Tackling Bullying Students in the Merrick School District recently learned some tips for standing up to bullying, as well as ways to create and maintain healthy friendships, during a twoday visit from nationally acclaimed children’s author Trudy Ludwig. Ludwig spent time at each of the district’s three schools, where she read her

book “The Invisible Boy” and engaged the students in activities that provided various ways to react to bullying. Along with advocating for friendship, she offered three tips to avoid being a bystander: comfort someone who has been bullied, include them in recess and report any incidents of bullying to an adult.

Ludwig also presented her “tool belt” of tricks to stand up to bullies. Using student volunteers, she re-enacted situations of bullying and responses to use with each. Among the responses were changing the subject, stopping the situation, questioning the bully, walking away, and showing indifference to the bully’s remarks.

Fourth-graders at Birch School and first-graders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District studied math and science in a creative way by conducting experiments using pumpkins. With the help of parent volunteers, students at both grade levels rotated among four stations designed to enhance their

mathematical, scientific, literary and artistic skills. At the science and math centers, they counted the number of lines on their pumpkins, measured the height, circumference and mass, and tested their buoyancy by dropping them into a bucket of water. Prior to each experiment, the students made a hypothesis about

the outcome. At the literary and artistic centers, the students created Venn diagrams, comparing facts about pumpkins to squash, wrote poems about the vegetable, and drew realistic renderings of their pumpkins by studying their creases and textures through a magnifying glass.

Legacy Project installed on the school’s wall later this school year. “This project is one that enhances the leadership principle and core value of teamwork,” Ms. Russell explained. “By working together, we will create a beautiful piece of art that will remain here in the school for everyone to enjoy.” During the first of a two-part ceramic workshop encompassing ceramic procedures and

techniques, the students first imprinted clay with the soles of their shoes to add a design element to the end product. Using a cookie cutter, each student cut out the shape of a star, which were collected and then placed in a kiln for 1012 hours at 1,200 degrees. The students will then paint and glaze the shapes, which will be designed and constructed into a mosaic in the shape of a hot air balloon.

Under the direction of Lisa Levenberg and Carisa Wellenreuther, MacArthur High School’s talented cast and crew drew a packed house during three performances of the musical comedy “The Addams Family,” held in the auditorium from November 17th19th. In addition, the cast entertained the audience with performances from Jenna Stillman (Grandma), Joey Calvo (Lucas), Michelle Shapiro (Alice), Ted Fiber (Mal) and Andrew Zabatta (Lurch). The show’s success was also due to the artistic

talents of choreographers Ryan Nolin and Jennifer Malin, stage manager Megan Opallo, pit orchestra director Iris Winter and set builders Matt Malin and John Mazzarella. Visitors Day John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School hosted Visitors Day on November 22nd, with each student welcoming a parent, grandparent or another special guest to serve as their learning partner. Teachers planned handson activities including engineering challenges, art projects and math games that got both children and adults involved. Secondgraders and their helpers used marshmallows,

spaghetti, string and tape to make the tallest free-standing structures that they could, while in fourth-grade classrooms each group used gumdrops and toothpicks to build something that could support the weight of a textbook. Kindergartners created turkey centerpieces and made Native Americaninspired headdresses, first-graders used string to measure apples and

Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted its first motivational TEDx event aimed at reaching a span of generations in the local community. TEDxWCMephamHigh, is a locally curated TEDx event geared toward creating connections across disciplines and across generations. Motivational speakers included Gian Paul Gonzalez, who worked with the New York Giants ahead of their 2012 Super Bowl win. His “all in” message resounded around the world. “All in is not a slogan, it’s a lifestyle,” he said. “When you keep going

after others tell you to quit … or that you’re not good enough.” Additionally, the event also included presentations and performances from Mepham’s own Becky Morawski, Matthew Singh, Rina Sarfraz, Emily Fontanetta and Brooke Pesce. Singh spoke about the breakdown of the English language. “It’s difficult to text and type when you can’t express emotion,” Singh said. “For millennials like us, it’s hard to think of a time without computers or cell phones. There needs to be some form of moderation so that my children are not glued to a screen.” He suggested the solution begins at school with teaching that “writing

Santino has announced that from November 21st, 2016 through January 3rd, 2017, all pet adoption fees are being waived at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. All adoptions include free spaying/neutering, rabies vaccinations and microchipping. “We are asking all Town of Hempstead families to consider bringing a shelter dog or cat ‘home for the holidays,’” stated

Supervisor Santino. “Residents will not pay a dime for adoptions, and all spaying/neutering and ageappropriate vaccinations will be provided free of charge.” In addition, the town has partnered with three local sponsors, Island Trees Veterinary Hospital in Hicksville, Dog Grooming by Rachel in Bellmore and Fido Fitness Club in Woodmere, all of which will be providing free gifts for each pet adopted from the town shelter during the Home for the Holidays program. “We are grateful to Island Trees Veterinary Hospital, Dog Grooming

by Rachel and Fido Fitness Club for partnering with the Town of Hempstead on this important pet adoption program,” added Supervisor Santino. A kidney transplant provided Levittown student Michael Reed, a sophomore at MacArthur High School, with a new purpose in life. Michael was recently invited to speak at Stony Brook University Medical Center about the importance of being an organ donor in recognition of National Organ Donor Appreciation Day. In addition, he received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his community service efforts with the medical center. “I wanted to feel accomplished in life,” Michael explained. “And

working with the hospital and participating in more speaking engagements makes me feel like I have acquired that goal.” At 14 years-old, Michael received a kidney transplant from his father, who was a perfect match. He said he realizes that he was lucky to have someone in the family willing to donate a kidney and, to this day, is eternally grateful. Today, Michael is healthy, although he is prohibited from playing contact sports. Since his recovery, Michael has served on the medical center’s youth advisory committee,

assisting in the planning and organization of an annual prom for patients residing at the hospital. He also volunteers his time with the medical center’s transportation department, transporting beds and materials to the various departments within the hospital. Immersed in Culture Over Veterans Day weekend, a group of 64 French students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District traveled to Québec, Canada. The itinerary for the trip, which is a first for the district, was organized by Kennedy World Languages teacher Paul Cirino. It included time in both Québec City and Montreal. “The four-day experience immersed students in an authentic experience that allowed them to put their French language skills to use,” said World Languages Chairperson Renée Fallon. “Students toured the most famous sights and experienced the region’s rich cuisine.” In addition to Fallon,

World Languages Department Chairpersons Rosa Kaplan and Enrique Montes accompanied the students as well as World Languages teachers Nikole DeLuca (Calhoun), Betsy Siegelaub (Mepham), Antonietta Valenti (Kennedy) and Rich Zawislak (Grand Avenue). Students spent the first two nights in Québec City where they visited famous landmarks such as the historic Château Frontenac, generally regarded as the most photographed hotel in the world. On the third day, students traveled to the city of Montreal, where they had the opportunity to visit its most important sites, including the NotreDame Basilica. On the last

day, students toured the McGill University campus, located in downtown Montreal. “One of the highlights of the trip was the chasse au trésor, a treasure hunt where groups of students wandered through the cobblestone streets of Québec City trying to find information about different landmarks,” Cirino said. “Students had the opportunity to practice their French throughout the trip.” In addition to conversations with tour guides, locals, and hotel and restaurant staff, they participated in a language immersion class where they learned about regional varieties of Québécois French.

Under the direction of Peter Kravitz, the Wantagh Warrior newspaper received 13 journalism awards during the annual Empire State School Press Association contest, held at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications. It is only the second time in 24 years that the newspaper has won three individual gold awards. These awards were acquired by Class of 2016 graduate Sarah Sneddon in the category of news story, senior Karen Kawacki for a

In the Merrick School District, the Birch School’s Students Against Destructive Decision club packaged 35 boxes of food for the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. All students, teachers, administrators and faculty were asked to donate canned goods

or nonperishable food items including pasta, soup, vegetables, jars of sauce, chicken broth and stuffing to the SADD club’s Thanksgiving food drive. During their recess time, fourth- and fifthgraders volunteered to package and organize each box to contain

equal representations of all donations for families to enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving dinner. A d d i t i o n a l l y, Thanksgiving placemats and decorations were made by students to be included in each box for families to embrace the holiday spirit.
