During the Levittown Public Schools Board of Education meeting on November 15th, the community learned about the district’s successful Summer Reading Extravaganza and the Division Avenue High School peer leaders were praised for their way of combating distracted driving.

Before kicking off the student presentations, the board noted the display around the room of artwork from students at Lee Road Elementary School. They encouraged community members to get an up close look at what the students have been doing inside the classroom. The first presentation of the meeting featured

In keeping with the Bellmore School District’s emphasis on leadership principles and core values, members of Shore Road School’s Random Acts of Kindness club and fifth-grade student council collaborated on a schoolwide campaign to help stock the pantries

of homes around the Bellmore community this Thanksgiving holiday. Under the direction of advisers Christine Davison and Jennifer Luccenta, respectively, the students collected nonperishable food items from October 31st through November 14th, which will be donated

to local families and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Community Pantry. In addition, members of Winthrop Avenue School’s student council came together to pack boxes of food to give to local families in need this Thanksgiving.

The group spoke about the district’s 2017 Summer Reading Extravaganza. Fifth-graders included Emily Hassard, Jacqueline Lu, Natalie Lajara, Ryan Mackin and Jessie Marousek. The students discussed their summer reading book by Chris Grabenstein titled, “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library,” and the projects that each fifth-grader in the district participated in to coincide with the story. Projects were displayed at the meeting for community members to get a better understanding of what reading activities the students took part in. Jonas E. Salk Middle School librarian Kirsten Anderson and Wisdom Lane Middle School librarian Cindy Koines, spoke about the secondary level summer reading book that their students read over the summer titled “Pay it Forward,” by Catherine Ryan Hyde. The group shared with the board how the district has collaborated with the Levittown Public Library and the success of the Summer Reading Extravaganza both over the summer and into the new school year. Fighting Hunger

Jump Rope for Heart Physical education classes at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently completed a jump rope-a-thon raising $6,426.50 for the American Heart Association. The Jump Rope for Heart program is a two-week unit in physical education class in which students participate in a variety of

jumping activities. During this time students volunteer to collect money from friends and family. “Students learn the lifelong benefits of cardiovascular exercise and how it leads to a healthy heart,” said Donna Greco, a physical education teacher. Bee-Botting Bee-Bots are the latest technology tool in the North Bellmore School District, which are being used to give students an introduction to computer science. I n s t r u c t i o n a l Technology Specialist Michael Bevilacqua has been visiting first-grade classes at all five elementary schools and showing students how to use the

small, light-up robots. Children work in teams to program the robots to follow intersecting lines on a mat by pushing a series of buttons. During a recent lesson at Martin Avenue Elementary School, Mr. Bevilacqua showed students how to have the robots perform basic movements, such as moving forward and turning left or right. The

teams had to complete a series of challenges by looking at pre-determined paths, then programming their robots to follow the route. Children learned about algorithms and got a basic understanding of computer coding. The activity required communication and collaboration among students in each group.

Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District took part in United Nations Universal Children’s Day on November 20th. Art teacher Jill Emmer gave a PowerPoint presentation on UNICEF, to raise awareness among students about the organization’s efforts to help children across the world and its partnership with the U.N. Universal Children’s Day is a 63-yearold initiative to promote issues that are important to kids such as access to clean water, basic healthcare, safe shelter and a right to

an education. To raise awareness, children across the globe are performing a new signature dance to “What About Us” by Pink. The musical artist has partnered with UNICEF to promote the cause using her hit song and having videos of students dancing shared online. Newbridge students in third through sixth grades danced in the auditorium, kindergartners moved along in their classes and fifth-graders did a special performance in front of the school. Ms. Emmer, who worked for UNICEF for 15 years

an art director before becoming an art teacher, said that the school’s participation in Universal Children’s Day fits in with the district’s mission. In North Bellmore, students are encouraged to contribute to the global community with creativity and compassion. “The mission statement impresses upon us as teachers of our need to help our students learn about the world outside of North Bellmore,” she said. “My hope was simple - to plant the seed of curiosity and compassion in Newbridge students.

What do some Dairy Queen’s and Jersey Mike’s Subs Have In Common? Laura Maier. Meet your neighbor, Laura Maier! Laura owns four successful franchised businesses on Long Island, with three more currently under construction! Surprisingly, she was not always an entrepreneur; instead, she previously worked in two corporate positions, one as a director at a healthcare consulting company, and one as an Assistant Director of Provider Enrollment at North Shore LIJ. Growing up in New Jersey, she enjoyed going to Dairy Queen so much; but when she moved to Long Island in 2002, she realized there were none in existence here. After working in corporate positions for a while, she felt the urge to own her own business and become more involved in her community. In 2013, Mrs. Maier opened the first Dairy Queen on Long Island in Massapequa. Since then, she opened two more - one in Levittown and one in Huntington, and she has one more on the way in East Northport. Laura grew interested in Jersey Mike’s Subs, as they were new to Long Island as well, and continued on to open their 7th store on the island in Farmingdale with her husband, Jeff Maier. They have two more locations under construction – one in Massapequa Park and one in Lindenhurst. As a franchise owner, she loves to have her independence, yet still receives guidance from corporate. Laura gets involved in her community through charitable events at her restaurants’ locations. Every year, all of her Dairy Queen locations have one day where they raise money to go

directly to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital, a charity she holds dear to her heart. Throughout the year, they contribute other donations to Cohen’s and run fundraisers for schools and other charitable organizations. As for her Jersey Mike’s Sub’s locations, they partner with one charity during their first month in business to donate a portion of that month’s proceeds to their cause. Her newest location in Farmingdale has partnered with the Farmingdale PTA during their first month in business, contributing donations to Farmingdale elementary, middle and high schools. Lastly, every year, all of her Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurants participate in what they call the Month of Giving, which is when they chose a day in March and donate all of their sales for the day to an organization of their choice. Of course, not every aspect of owning a business is so cheerful; there are always struggles as well. Laura mentioned that her biggest struggle is the battle of affording the rising minimum wage without increasing her prices, so she can keep her prices competitive. With that being said, she still feels it’s all worth it because she loves what she does and works with a great team, one that is truly like family to her. Laura has been voted businessperson of the year in 2015 by the Massapequa Republican Club and was listed in the Top 50 Women in Business in 2016 by Long Island Business News. Spirit of the Season Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

HARMONY CAFÉ!

Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony

Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Sponsors are needed to help support the mission of Harmony Café by helping to fund each event and, in return, they will have their business promoted by the Café. Honor Society Inducts 81 Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 81 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony, held in the auditorium on November 28th. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators, musical interludes by the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the national anthem by Lindsay Whiteman. Principal Carolyn Breivogel relayed a story reminding the students “actions are more powerful than words,” while Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara noted that the inductees most probably had to make sacrifices

along the way, but chose to stay the course. Board of Education President Keira McLoughlin also remarked “tiny, decent things make your character and help to build your community.” Keynote speaker and band director Mindy Dragovich advised the inductees to “learn to play the Game of Life by your rules.” She also encouraged them, upon waking up each morning, to prevent being bombarded by social media, so to reflect on what to be grateful for and set goals for the day. “By doing this you will contact your subconscious and stay true to who you are,” she said. NHS trustees Samantha Cashton, Ryan McCarty, Keriann Steingruebner

and Sarah Valvo then lit the ceremonial candles, representing the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship, prior to the induction of new members, who were led in the society’s pledge by covice presidents Katherine Gifford and Olivia Zukowski. NHS co-presidents Michael Hennig and Kyleigh Watson congratulated the inductees and offered words of advise. “The reputation you leave behind will largely be determined by your character and the way you treat others,” Michael said.

Science Research Retreat On November 19th, sophomores in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Advanced Science Research program traveled to LIU Post, to attend a retreat that was designed exclusively for them. “Throughout the day, students were hosted by professors of biology, biomedical science,

chemistry, heath science, psychology and forensic science who engaged them with hands-on laboratory activities and discussions about science research,” said Robert Soel, science chairperson. The students also met with LIU students who spoke about their projects and research experiences in the LIU honors college.

“An exciting part of the day was the opportunity to work collectively with ASR sophomores from each of the schools,” said Patrick Mannion, a science chairperson. “It was a very inspiring experience and a great chance to learn directly from local research scientists.”

Pen and paper are not forgotten tools at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, as writing is a daily activity that reinforces literacy development. Through Writer’s Workshop, a districtwide initiative, students are constantly producing stories on a variety of topics. Students are using mentor texts, which serve as examples of good writing, to guide their own writing. Teacher Jenna West recently read “My Big

Brother” to her students, then had them write about someone special in their lives. Kindergartners in Lorraine Doyle’s and Jennie Kuhn’s classes did an author study of Donald Crews, then created pieces for their writing folders that told stories largely through illustrations. Fifth-graders recently worked on memoir writing and each student had to do an in-depth piece on a childhood memory. Students first had to fill their writer’s notebooks with ideas, then share with

classmates before selecting their topics. Next, they had to fill out author’s purpose sheets. Questions like “Why do you want to share this experience with others?” and “What emotions do you want your readers to feel?” helped to guide their writing. The young writers were able to understand the information they needed to include and the literary devices they should use to make their stories more meaningful and powerful.

New Seating Flexible seating is a concept fifth-grade teacher Melissa Mignoli has brought to her classroom at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. It is part of an effort to promote a more comfortable learning environment. Students can choose from numerous options including gym balls, scoop rockers, fixed or wobble stools, stability discs or traditional chairs. Tables are at different heights to accommodate the different seating choices, including one high enough that students can stand.

Ms. Mignoli said she did research over the summer and decided that providing students with seating choices would be beneficial, especially because many children better focus through movement. Some of her students have a preferred seating choice while others prefer to switch throughout the day. “The students are so much more engaged because they have the choice of where they want to sit, and there are enough choices to keep them all happy,” Ms. Mignoli said. “My classroom definitely looks different than any

other classroom.” Student Sarah Ostroff said that she likes to use the stools, because it gives her a better view of the Smart Board. She said that the ability to move while sitting helps her release energy so she can learn better. Several students also focused on flexible seating in their Writer’s Workshop assignments, such as Danielle Yosha who wrote that it “allows students to become more comfortable while learning and could motivate them to work harder academically.”

Bellmore fourth-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School are thinking about storylines through the art form of cartooning. Under the direction of student teacher and former School of Visual Arts student David Shear, their story ideas reflect newspaper comic strips and are inspired by Calvin and Hobbs and Garfield.

“I wanted to bring my enthusiasm for cartooning to the classroom,” Mr. Shear said. “When creating a cartoon, the students must learn to be succinct, and in this case, draw out their story in just four panels.” During the cartooning classes, the students learned first to think of a story visually. They then

broke down the story into a sequence and wrote an accompanying script. Forming four panels on a sheet of paper, they then drew their corresponding pictures and accompanied each with word balloons to hold the script. Finally, the pictures within each panel were colored and the panel lines were highlighted.

Stepping Into the Past The auditorium at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District looked like a scene from the 1800s as firstgraders participated in Step Back in Time Day on November 22nd. After taking a trip to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, students participated in a morning of games and crafts back

at school. They made oldtime toys such as pig in a pen and button whirligigs, wrote their names using quill pens, and created colorful Eye of God crafts using tongue depressors and string. Parent volunteers assisted at each station. Children were also assigned jobs from the 1850s. They were bakers, cobblers, hatters, millers,

smithies and tailors. First-grade teachers Lynda Brust, Jennifer Ecuyer and Debbie Edgerly explained that students learned about the idea of simplicity and compared modern times to the past. Step Back in Time Day was an opportunity for the children to have some good old-fashioned fun.

Educational Grant The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Program, “This additional funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation will

allow us to enhance the dialogue between the social workers and patients about breast reconstruction, as this is an option and right that many women are not aware of, specifically underserved populations.” Federal law signed in 1998 requires health group insurance plans to cover breast reconstruction and New York State requires healthcare professionals to discuss reconstruction with patients prior to cancer removing surgery. Bilingual social workers address barriers that interfere with the continuity of treatment including transportation, food, legal services and financial needs. Efforts are made to connect patients to community agencies and coalitions and help facilitate applications. In addition, patients are offered the opportunity to address issues related

to reconstruction. Each patient is encouraged to explore her unique feelings and needs surrounding her breast cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery. By providing a safe place to discuss body image, intimacy and fears, each patient is enabled to make an informed decision reflecting her unique needs. Social Workers are also available to support each patient throughout the process and help to facilitate ongoing communication with her plastic surgeon and treatment team. Bringing Joy with Toys Students at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District want all children to have a happy holiday season. The Students Against Destruction Decisions club, under the leadership of social worker Ellen Perrick, organized a toy drive.

Toys will be donated to the local John Theissen Children’s Foundation to benefit youngsters who are hospitalized during the holidays. Some items will also be sent to Texas for families who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Members of SADD made posters that were hung

throughout the school to encourage their peers to make a donation. They also made announcements and decorated collection boxes in the lobby. The toy drive runs through Dec. 20 and the students said they hope it is a success so they can bring joy to others.

Acting to the Test Eighth-grade students in the Levittown Public School’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School’s Respect and Responsibility, Integrity, Safety, Staying Healthy and Empathy Program recently put their acting skills to the test through the school’s pushin program “Middle School

101.” Students involved in the RISE program, also known as junior leaders, strive to give the school’s sixthgraders a smooth transition into life as a middle school student. “Middle School 101” allows support staff to visit sixth-grade classes to discuss all aspects of

middle school life. Under the guidance of advisors social worker Noreen Williams and guidance counselors Michelle Lyons and Michelle Steward, the eighth-graders participate in weekly round table discussions throughout the program on how to properly communicate to

the sixth-graders about important topics such as handling conflicts, bullying situations, spreading kindness and more. To further the conversation and remind students to be mindful of their actions, the eighthgraders decided to use

technology to get their messages across. With the help of the school’s movie making club advisor Nectaria Kourkoumelis, the students filmed various skits using a green screen to share with the sixthgraders. The skits tackled cyberbullying, roasting others, how a bystander

can transform into an upstander and how to be courteous to others every day. “They are very engaged in it,” said Williams. “We try to make them aware of what is going on outside of themselves and it has been great having these conversations with them.”

Under the guidance of musical director Lisa Levenberg and producer Carisa Wellenreuther, General Douglas MacArthur High School students in the Levittown Public Schools performed their fall production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” with a free matinee performance on November 15th for senior citizens and performances from November 16th-18th for the community.
