A Conversation with “The Conners” Star Lecy Goranson By Allison Kugel
Allison Kugel: When you stepped off the Roseanne set for the last time in 1997, did you ever think that you’d be playing Becky Conner again all these years later? Lecy Goranson: No (laughs), I didn’t! Being back has made me realize the time I missed when I was away. It’s an interesting feeling that hit me, that the show continued on without me [back then]. Everyone was still together after I left. I had a lot of mixed feelings about it. Not regret, but I thought, “Wow. I really love these people and I made a move, but it’s been such a blessing to be reconnected with everyone.”
Lecy Goranson: I never really had a chance to talk to her until we were on Amy Shumer together. We went out to dinner and it was really interesting to hear what she had to say, which was a lot! Anyone who gets a job like that, it’s very exciting, especially if you’re
Allison Kugel: I’ve heard you say in several interviews that you left the original Roseanne during the height of its success to have a normal college experience. I have to ask, what prompted you to become a child star in the first place? Lecy Goranson: I was a dancer, and there’s a place in Evanston, Illinois called the Noise Cultural Arts Center where they have dance, acting, painting and different classes in the arts. I was taking dance classes. Right down the hall was the Piven Theatre Workshop, started by Burt and Joyce Piven who were coming from Second City Comedy Troupe. I started taking classes there and Burt and Joyce were affiliated with a [talent] agency in downtown Chicago. They asked me to go on a couple of open calls. My parents wanted me to be involved in activities because they were working a lot. So that was the
amount of their vested interest, just to keep me busy and productive. I did two auditions and the second one was for Roseanne. I think they hired Laurie Metcalf, who was also from Chicago, and me, because they wanted to have some actors that were actually from the Chicago area to give the show that flavor. But yeah, it was a total fluke. Allison Kugel: Now it makes sense to me that you would one day, as a teenager, realize you wanted to step away and just be a college student. Lecy Goranson: Yes. But after college I had to say to myself, “Look, you love being an actor and this lifestyle of suffering (laughs). This is what you really want.” It’s funny when you have to parent yourself. Allison Kugel: Twenty years later, what are you now bringing to the role of Becky Conner on The Conners? Lecy Goranson: I’ve been doing theatre for so many years. Like any skill, you build muscle by repetition. I’ve also had the privilege of working with great actors in the New York theatre community. The character of Becky is really strong, grounded and wise. It’s interesting re-approaching a character in this way, with all of my own life experiences. And I feel it when I am there; I feel my age! I’ve been around the block, but I think back to my former self as a child and I think, “Hmm, what was it like?” It’s hard for me to remember a lot of it. There is a part of youth that is so unconscious, and there’s such a beautiful thing about that in retrospect. That unconsciousness gives you a lot of bold confidence. Allison Kugel: A lot has been said about Roseanne Barr in recent months, through the media. Tell me what it was like growing up around Roseanne and John Goodman when you were a kid... Lecy Goranson: I’ve always felt really close to John. Our personalities are similar, and I have always felt very connected to him. I hate to use the term “genius,” because people throw it around, but they both do have a genius for the work. Roseanne, the way her mind would think, comically, was really advanced. And John is such an incredible actor. His genius is in being so present in every moment, and tweaking the script in his own way. He is one of the most present actors I have ever been around. The two of them together were just like a
couple of big kids, encouraging each other to go further. They were a great team, and they’d bring out the best in each other. They both loved humiliating the kids in a scene. Yes, they would get off on embarrassing us! Allison Kugel: How about your TV siblings Sarah Gilbert and Michael Fishman, who still play your sister and brother, Darlene and D.J., on The Conners? What’s the relationship like between the three of you? Lecy Goranson: I live on the east coast and they’re on the west coast. Apart from Laurie Metcalfe and John Goodman who do theatre in New York occasionally, I don’t see everybody that much. Sarah and I are very close. We spent all this time apart and then when we were reunited, I remembered how well we know each other. You can’t help but be close like that if you see each other every day for however many years, and you’re the only two young ladies on the set. Michael is just a doll. He’s turned into such a mature, loving, wonderful person. I feel a lot of pride for the fact that we have turned out pretty good. Allison Kugel: Last year, before Roseanne became The Conners, how did the reboot come together? Lecy Goranson: It had a lot to do with Sarah. I also know that Roseanne had been thinking about doing it for a long time, independently. Michael and Roseanne had been talking about it. It all came together, and Sarah took on the role of Executive Producer. When Sarah reached out to everyone, we all said, “Let’s do it.” And we’re still doing it! Allison Kugel: I love the fact that everyone was game to come on board. If you are known and beloved for playing an iconic television character that people identify with,
and you are a part of pop culture history, that’s amazing! What’s wrong with that?! Lecy Goranson: I think also the fact that, at the end of the day, our show is about a family. There is something appealing about keeping that family unit alive and revisiting them at a later time. I think we are a special show to a lot of people, and the family dynamic that we have makes it so. Allison Kugel: Why should people continue to tune in to The Conners? Lecy Goranson: Because it’s the best show on TV, of course!

Allison Kugel: You’re referring to your character Becky being re-cast with actress Sarah Chalke during the fifth season of Roseanne. There are three characters in television that were famously re-cast during the height of a show’s success. You’ve got the two Darrens from Betwitched, the two Lionels from The Jeffersons and the two Beckys from Roseanne. I’m sure you’ve talked with Sarah Chalke at length about her taking over your role all those years ago. What was it like for Sarah to step into your shoes halfway through the series’ original run?
a small-town girl from Canada, which she was. I was talking with some of the other actors about what it might feel like to be a guest star on our show. For me, I know all these people and I’ve worked with them for years, but I still feel like I really have to bring my A-game. There’s a heightened feeling of responsibility in working with such amazing people. I can only imagine how intimidating that was for her, beyond the sheer joy of having a job like that. Stepping into a character that was already established, it was challenging for her. But she stepped into an environment where there were a lot of loving people, and really talented people to help her bring her game up.

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). More than 140 residential properties provide eligible Nassau and Suffolk residents with safe, affordable housing and support services. Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction. These services are personalized and include skill building, peer support and
development of family support, as well as prevocational and educational support. Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives.
East Broadway Student Elections Leading up to election day, fourth- and fifthgraders at East Broadway Elementary School prepared for their school’s student council election with a visit from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran on November 2nd. The special visit allowed students to hear from Curran about public speaking, her job, the election process and the challenges of her position. Student council candidates listened intently with the rest of their peers as Curran
shared her own advice about making speeches. She told the students to sound confident, to remember to breathe and to take their time. Curran also spoke about her role in Nassau County and answered an array of questions that the students had. This included speaking about the importance of safety and what motivates her. “I love my job. It’s never boring and I’m always learning,” Curran told students. “Every single day I’m learning something
new. I’m meeting new people and problem solving, that’s what keeps me going.” The student candidates prepared to take the stage after Curran, to share why they would make the best secretary, treasurer, vicepresident and president for East Broadway. Curran showed her support by watching some of the student speeches. Classes voted later in the day for the individual’s that they believed would serve their school best.
Headquartered in Smithtown, their agency also operates satellite offices in Hempstead and Amityville and a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. The thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and houseohld cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.)

Scientist Recognized By The Michael J. Fox Foundation Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Professor David Eidelberg, MD, won the fourth annual Bachmann-Strauss Prize for Excellence in Dystonia Research. Dr. Eidelberg received an unrestricted $100,000 grant for his use of innovative brain imaging techniques and computational algorithms to better understand the pathophysiology of this disorder and its treatment. Michael J. Fox and Todd Sherer, PhD, CEO of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), presented the prize at an MJFF event in New York City on November 10, 2018.

As some of you may recall, several years ago there was a play called “Fiddler on the Roof,” which was a tremendous success and played on Broadway for quite some time. The title character was the village fiddler who had a desire to play his tunes on the roof of his house. The audience soon recognized that the fiddler was the soul of the neighborhood that reflected the good and bad times that the people experienced. One of the central songs that the lead character, Tevye, a “poor man,” sang was entitled “If I Were a Rich Man.” It became the central theme of the play and began with “ If I were a rich man, I would build a winding staircase in my house going up to the top and leading nowhere.” The point he was making was that he wanted all of his neighbors to believe he was really rich, which he was not. I have used this central theme as the basis for this article. As a starter, let’s take the owning of cars. How many of you drive a reasonably priced automobile, but if the opportunity arose would really like to own a luxury car, like a Jaguar
or Range Rover? How about where you live? What if you could own an estate in an area north of 25A, such as Upper Brookville or Sands Point? Lastly, instead of taking your family on summer weekends to Jones Beach (and bucking the crowds), in addition to your present home, you had a lovely condo in Boca Raton, Florida, plus a nice getaway home in the Berkshires? If you had all three of the above changes in lifestyle, would you be made automatically happy? For example, while prices could vary, a typical Range Rover would lease for at least $600 monthly; ditto for the Jaguar. It’s of no comfort to learn that Range Rovers are a favorite target for thieves who steal the vehicle from parking lots and quickly take them to a “chop-shop,” where they are stripped and resold as parts for a higher price. Does that mean that every time you park the vehicle you need to look around for any suspicious individuals who may be checking out your car? I hope not. Let’s take our second example of living in an expensive home north of 25A. Taxes on this type of property

The Perception of Value “Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.” - Jim Rohn I can recall, back in 2012, reading a fascinating article about the discovery of a new planet made entirely of diamond. Can you imagine? That precious stone that Marilyn Monroe famously crooned about ala Diamonds are a girl’s best friend... and there’s a whole planet in our galaxy that’s made up of the stuff?! I laughed to myself at the time, pondering the thought, “Would diamonds have nearly the same value and prestige as they do here on earth, if we lived on a planet where the very bedrock beneath our feet was made of diamond?” I believe the answer is no. If that were the case, gifting your paramour with a diamond ring would be the equivalent of going to the nearest beach, and picking up a simple rock off the ground. It would be considered “ordinary.” You laugh, but think about it. I am not trying to belittle the value of diamonds, and there is certainly
nothing wrong with enjoying some material things. Rather, I am illustrating that what we covet is often a matter of perception and societal conditioning. Have you ever asked yourself, “What would I hold most dear in my life, if not for what I have been indoctrinated into valuing by my society or social circle?” As human beings, we tend to value things that cost great sums of money, or things that we perceive as hard to attain. The things in life that are given to us freely and easily, we often take for granted. The great irony here is that the things with large monetary price tags attached to them are largely replaceable, whereas the things we are given for free like love, friendship, good health, knowledge of oneself and the world, our imagination, and even our bodies, are not replaceable. Did you know that the price of an artificial limb can be as much as fifty thousand dollars? Unless you’ve had to be the recipient of one due to disease or an accident, I bet you’ve never concerned
yourself with such a fact. The cost of an artificial heart could run you in the area of three hundred thousand dollars. And to think, we are issued these divinely made human bodies at birth. It is nothing short of a miracle. Everything else, well, everything else is advertising. The love and support of a true friend or loved one, and the camaraderie of our communities, if we allow it to, can truly bolster and propel our spirits forward. Material things are fine and can be enjoyable to experience, but balance is key. So give thought to what you hold as valuable, and ask yourself, “If there were no crowd to impress, no willing participants to applaud or express their envy, would I still find this item to be of value to my life?” While some of the things we possess are big, fast or shiny, with large pricetags attached, others are simply... priceless.

Fiddler On The Roof will be very high, along with the additional expenses of running a large house. It’s a known fact that people moving into a type of environment tend to underestimate their first year expenses by at least 20%! Is that how you would like to live? Now, we can take a look at a second home in Boca Raton, Florida. I am very familiar with this since I have owned a home there and used it mostly as a rental property. To do this end, I had to hire a third party who took care of my home when I wasn’t there. I won’t burden you with all the details, but every month there were additional expenses. Right before I sold it, I learned that carpenter ants had eaten through most of my front door and front windows, and the repair bill came to several thousand dollars. Would you like to experience this? I doubt it. Now, let us go back to the central theme of this column, where many people constantly wish for bigger and better things in life. Why is this so? My guess is that it’s because most individuals are bombarded on a daily basis with ads of all types. For
example, upon waking up in the morning and listening to the radio or television, one hears a very large amount of commercials, including everything from medical devices to life insurance. This barrage of commercials continues throughout the day and well into the night, including the Internet and social media. In my opinion, the only reasonable thing to do is to ignore the advertisements that have no use to you, and carefully select those of interest. Now you should have the ability to carefully screen out commercials, which have no value to you, and at the same time, be aware of all the good things you have accomplished in your life. If you have come this far I would say “well done”… “well done indeed.” Peace.

Improving Neonatal Outcomes NYU Winthrop Hospital announced that it has developed a diagnostic method for evaluating a common swallowing and feeding dysfunction that impacts 30–70% of verylow-birth-weight, pr-term infants. The condition, dysphagia, can result in serious consequences when milk, rather than reaching an infant’s stomach, goes down the wrong way and penetrates the airway (trachea). This can be devastating to
fragile, immature lungs and lead to problems such as pneumonia, lung inflammation, and growth compromise. NYU Winthrop’s new diagnostic approach for detecting dysphagia involves FEES and VFSS (see descriptions below) done simultaneously. While the approach is still being studied, it has proven so safe and successful that the hospital determined it could not withhold using the technique in its
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). NYU Winthrop is believed to be the only medical center in the U.S. – and possibly the world – employing this dual diagnostic approach done simultaneously, which the Hospital believes will soon become a standard of care. NYU Winthrop simultaneously announced groundbreaking research by the hospital that shows cold formula as an effective therapy for dysphagia in preterm infants.
Dysphagia is related to poor coordination of the swallowing mechanism, which might stem from poor sensory information transported to the brain from the pharynx, which is at the back of the mouth and connects to tubes to the stomach. The NYU Winthrop research showed that cold milk startles the pharynx, triggering the brain to initiate more efficient swallowing movements. A similar cold feeding approach has
been used for some time in adult stroke and throatcancer patients who suffer degradation in swallowing capabilities but has not previously been a standard for the infant population. NYU Winthrop’s Division of Neonatal Medicine has shown cold liquid to be very effective in shortduration feedings, with pilot data showing a reduction in dysphagia occurrences from 71% to 26%. These results were published in Dysphagia, a
multidisciplinary journal devoted to swallowing and its disorders, with the research titled “ShortTerm Effects of Cold Liquids on the Pharyngeal Swallow in Preterm Infants with Dysphagia: A Pilot Study.” Currently, Dr. Hanna’s research team is investigating the effects of an entire cold-feed on feeding performance in preterm infants. Dr. Hanna expects this research to

Using only pasta and glue, Winthrop Avenue School fourth-grade students in Christopher Merz’s class designed planetary rovers using the same design process utilized by Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers. The goal of the project was to see whether the students’ vehicle designs could travel down a onemeter ramp, as well as an additional meter, on a smooth, flat surface. Students first had to
brainstorm their designs and sketch their concepts for a pasta rover on paper. Each team was allotted a $60 million budget and were charged for each piece of pasta utilized in the design. For example, a piece of lasagna totaled $10 million, while a piece of penne, ziti or rigatoni cost $4 million. After the planetary rovers were built, the students used stop watches to measure the time their vehicle was in transit
and the distance traveled down the ramp. Using dimensional analysis, they converted their findings to the rate at which their rover traveled in miles per hour. Like true scientists and engineers, the students completed the assignment by discussing and documenting the factors which contributed to their success, as well as ways in which to improve their designs.
Clued in to Science at East Lake Student detectives were on the scene in the Magnet classroom at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Fifth-grade students in the enrichment program were recently immersed in a unit about crime scene forensics. The young investigators participated in several hands-on forensic science tests on evidence found at a “crime scene” — a roped
off area full of curious clues. They used these clues as well as known knowledge about their suspects to determine what happened to the “victim.” Students had to distinguish between hard evidence and inferences. Rotating through different lab stations, they analyzed fingerprints, footprints and handwriting, conducted thread comparison and powder tests and more.
“Students were energized and empowered, having experienced the value of science as a tool for investigation,” Magnet teacher Lisa Gennardo said. “Everybody loves a mystery. You’d be hard pressed to find a child that doesn’t like to investigate, explore and conduct experiments.”

In terms of detecting dysphagia in preterm infants, previously there were limited diagnostic tools. NYU Winthrop’s new technique involves combining two diagnostic tools, FEES and VFSS which, independent of one another, were helpful
diagnostic tools but had several limitations. Using them simultaneously has been shown by NYU Winthrop to dramatically improve upon information obtained, with the results yielding more specific and more sensitive information than obtained through just one test. VFSS is short for Video Fluoroscopy Swallow Study, or X-ray fluoroscopy, which has to be done in the radiology suite. Previously,
this was the only available tool to study a preterm infant’s ability to swallow safely, but it is not without some shortcomings. The main disadvantage is the use of radiation, which means that it cannot be used repeatedly despite the infant developing and changing from week to week. Other disadvantages include an inability to use during breastfeeding and associated risks to transporting a sick,
preterm infant to a radiology suite. The other diagnostic tool, Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing, or FEES, is a bedside portable endoscopy test that has been around for decades for use in evaluating dysphagia in adult patients but rarely evaluated in neonates. NYU Winthrop’s preliminary data showed that FEES identified dysphagia in 69% of all swallows compared
with 60% for VFSS, and when combined, the two diagnostic tools gave an even more comprehensive picture of the infant feeding issue. NYU Winthrop now uses the two tests for initial screenings of preterm infants, after which followup tests can use FEES-only for updating information as the baby further develops. NYU Winthrop’s NICU is ranked among the best in the world regarding overall survival of extremely

This is when compared to more than 800 NICUs by the prestigious Vermont Oxford Registry Network, an authority on the measurement of care and outcomes for high-risk infants all over the world. Creating a Legacy Project

Using clay and the soles of their shoes, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students in grades K-2 have embarked on a collaborative artistic representation of their connection to the school community. Called the “Sole” Mates Legacy Project, the students are working under the direction of visiting artist Catherine Russell to create a lighthouse-themed mosaic, that will eventually be installed on the school’s cafeteria wall later this school year. Ms. Russell explained to the students that
lighthouses possess their own designs, much like a street sign for sailors and specific to a certain region. She also noted that the Reinhard lighthouse will have its own pattern. The lighthouse is symbolic of Bellmore School District’s recent designation as a Lighthouse District by FranklinCovey’s Leader in Me – the first school district in Nassau County, on Long Island and in New York State to receive this districtwide honor. During the first of a two-part ceramic workshop encompassing
ceramic procedures and techniques, the students first rolled out the clay and then imprinted each clay square with the soles of their shoes to add a design element to the end product. Using a cookie cutter, they cut out shapes to create a lighthouse, sun and clouds, which were collected and then placed in a kiln for 10-12 hours at 1,200 degrees. The students will then paint and glaze the shapes, which will be designed and constructed into a mosaic in the shape of a lighthouse.

Scientist Recognized By The Michael J. Fox Foundation “I am honored to join the esteemed roster of Bachmann-Strauss Prize winners who are leading researchers in dystonia,” said Dr. Eidelberg. “With the financial support from MJFF, I can continue to better understand the cause and identify treatments for dystonia.” Dystonia is a movement disorder and a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease.
Patients with dystonia experience involuntary muscle movements on a particular side of the body or all over. The condition can be genetic or caused by damage to the nervous system. Those with the gene for dystonia do not always contract the condition, further adding to the mystery of this condition. Currently there is no cure for dystonia; the medical community can
only treat the symptoms. Dr. Eidelberg was recognized for his pioneering work in using brain imaging and network modeling to identify abnormal brain circuits in people with dystonia. Using these novel techniques, he showed how genetic mutations influence the development of dysfunctional brain circuits, and why some people with the mutation
have symptoms of the disorder while others do not. His studies also provided insights as to the location and severity of symptoms in individual patients. This led to new image-based methods to evaluate individuals with different forms of dystonia and help objectively assess their response to treatment. Presented as part of the partnership between
the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation and MJFF, the Bachmann-Strauss Prize broadens public awareness and recognizes key scientific discoveries in dystonia. The prize honors dystonia researchers for key scientific discoveries and provides incentive for the next generation of investigators to continue forging paths toward cures.
“Dr. Eidelberg’s contributions to u n d e r s t a n d i n g Parkinson’s disease cannot be overstated,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institute. “His research has opened important new avenues for mapping brain networks that are fundamental to understanding debilitating movement disorders.”
After being named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School in October, W.T. Clarke High School of the East Meadow School District received spotlight in Washington, D.C. during a congratulatory celebration Nov. 7-8. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr. joined W.T. Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels and teacher representative Joseph Pavia at the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program awards ceremony to accept the distinction. “It was truly an honor to be present for such a celebration of teaching and learning,” said Dr. Card. “The award ceremony was wonderful and a great way to recognize the accomplishment of W.T. Clarke.” Included among those on hand to honor the 349 National Blue

Memorable D.C. Trip Ribbon Schools was Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Of the 300 public schools nationwide that were honored with the award, W.T. Clarke is among only 20 percent that were honored from the high school level. Additionally, W.T. Clarke is one of only 20 schools in New York State to be named a National Blue Ribbon School this year. “I cannot be more honored and humbled to have been the teacher representative for our amazing school,” said Pavia. “Thank you to my fellow teachers, Dr. Card and Mr. Voels for allowing me to attend this once in a lifetime event. This award is for our entire school.” The district once again congratulates W.T. Clarke High School for this honor and for demonstrating the greatness that happens in East Meadow.

Wantagh High School’s college-level Virtual Enterprises International class attended the Virtual Enterprises International Business and Entrepreneurship Leadership Conference, held at LIU Post on Oct. 19. The annual conference, attended by more than 90 teams, enables VEI students to network with and hear from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs in business, fashion, branding and entrepreneurship. Student Jake Boden placed in the top 12 for the elevator pitch competition where he sparked interest in the class’ company Coffee
Cubed, which provides a rechargeable custom thermos that heats content to any temperature in two minutes or less. Coffee cubes are placed in the thermos tray and dissolve into the water, making a perfect cup of coffee. The cubes are perishable and do not cause pollution like K-cups. The Wantagh School District implemented the VEI program during the 2016-2017 school year, which allows students to develop a virtual business from concept to implementation. The class is a real work environment in which the students assume business
responsibilities based on their backgrounds and interests and the classroom simulates the atmosphere of a company. As employees of a virtual business, students are held accountable for the company’s performance. They conduct market research, develop a business plan, design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(K) plans and draft an annual report. In addition, students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms from school districts locally, nationally and internationally.
Tiniest of Babies at NYU Winthrop Some of Long Island’s tiniest babies celebrated their first Halloween dressed up as witches, mermaids, candy corn, and Harry Potter characters at a celebration arranged by the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staff at NYU Winthrop Hospital. The goal was to provide parents of the newborns, who can’t stroll among trick-or-treaters in their own neighborhoods, an opportunity to create a special Halloween memory while still in the Hospital. More than 20 babies, including some of the tiniest ones born prematurely, donned adorable costumes that were devotedly crafted. Both day and nighttime NICU staff voted for the Cutest, Funniest, and Best Overall, with the winning families receiving jampacked baskets of baby goodies. “These costumes capture the tiny personalities of our NICU babies, and the contest brings great joy to the parents, who get
to experience the spirit of Halloween even while their child is in the hospital,” said Caterina Tiozzo, MD, PhD, Neonatologist at NYU Winthrop. “The event is also providing parents an occasion to focus on costumes and fun rather than worries and fears, helping them to deal with the stress of having a baby in the NICU and allowing them to start building joyful memories with their babies.” The NICU is a special nursery for babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks) or with other medical problems such as breathing disorders, feeding issues, heart problems, infections or conditions requiring surgery. Premature babies often have more than one problem because their systems are immature, and they need to grow before they can go home. NYU Winthrop’s NICU is ranked among the best in the world regarding its outcomes, both in terms of overall survival
and survival without complications in extremely premature babies. This is when compared to more than 800 NICUs by the prestigious Vermont Oxford Registry Network, an authority on the measurement of care and outcomes for high-risk infants. “Babies in the NICU may have been born too small, too soon, or with a medical condition that requires they be in the hospital for weeks or months, which can be very draining on the parents,” added LaShon Pitter, Nurse Manager of NYU Winthrop Hospital NICU. “We continually look for ways to support the families during these challenging times, and the joy and laughter that this Halloween contest brings is definitely a dose of the right medicine for parents.” This is the second year this NYU Winthrop Halloween contest was held.
