n an effort to teach its students about the democratic process, Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore hosted Student Advisory Council elections in early November. Fourth-graders were able to run for secretary and president, while thirdgraders were on the ballot for vice president. To get the word out on their candidacy, the students created campaign posters and were each responsible for drafting a speech and delivering it to the student body.

Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally
even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

Lights Camera Drama
This fall, before school on Tuesday mornings, more than 50 fifth- and sixth-grade students at Shore Road School in the Bellmore School District voluntarily participated in the Shore Road Drama Club. The budding playwrights created original characters, plots and scripts and performed skits for one another. “Club activities involved
students developing and performing their own scripts, and the experience of acting from a published play,” said club co-adviser Linda Lebowitz. “Skits titled ‘The Poisonous Pancakes,’ ‘An Undiscovered Planet,’ ‘Past the Corner,’ ‘Ghost Bumps,’ ‘The Haunted House,’ ‘The Apartment of Doom’ and ‘Wrong Direction’ kept us laughing and on the edge
of our seats, and even gave us a few goose bumps.” The goal of the club, which is now in its third year, is to expose students to different aspects of the theater arts. In addition to creating their own plays, the students learned to read lines and use their voices to convey emotion, humor and suspense.

Bellmore Board Recognized
ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY
In recognition of the hard work and commitment the Bellmore School District Board of Education dedicates to students and staff, a ceremony was held prior to the November 19th meeting to honor the Board’s five members. During the ceremony, a districtwide chorus featuring students in grades 2-6 performed a
few musical selections for the Board. As they do every year, the PTA donated a gift to the district on behalf of the Board. This year’s gift was a kiln, which will be housed at Shore Road School. The recognition was made to mark the New York State School Boards Association’s School Board Recognition Week. The
week, which took place October 28th through November 1st, enables local school boards to be thanked for their volunteer service by their schools and community. “We appreciate everyone coming out and taking the time to show such support and community,” remarked Board President Maryanne Kelly.

To celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, first-graders in the classes of Lauren Giordano, Jennifer Raniollo, David Reilly, Lauren Sanfilippo and Natalie Sicolli at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center gathered together on November 26th to participate in Thanksgiving
work centers. At each center, the students were tasked with various projects to reinforce what they’re learning in their classrooms. To strengthen their deduction and social skills while working on taking turns, the first-graders participated in the Native

Gobble Gobble American game “Pass the Stone.” The students also put their mathematical and artistic skills to good use by creating headdresses using geometric patterns. In addition, they created a turkey craft and enjoyed a reading of “’Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving” by Dav Pilkey.
Fourth-graders at Wantagh’s Forest Lake Elementary School know how to make wampum and have tasted journey cakes, popularly known as johnnycakes, after participating in their school’s Native American Day. The students learned about Native American life in their social studies classes and visited Theodore Roosevelt Museum to learn more about how the Pilgrims GOBBLE GOBBLE - First-graders in Lauren Giordano’s class at Charles A. first harsh winter. Dressed as Native Americans, the students delved into a number of activities that celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday “The students have been learning that the Native Americans were the first people to live off the land, and we have centered our learning on their day-today activities and culture,” explained teacher Michele Anszelowicz. The fourth-graders rotated through a variety of stations, which included playing a corn
toss game in which dried corn is thrown through a tree branch. Students made turtle rattles and cornhusk dolls, toys used by young children of the period. Stations also included dying fabric with berries and beets, writing stories and symbols on fabric that resembled leather, and intricate weaving. One of the favorite activities was wampum making, in which beads were crafted from shells found on Long Island.

Bailey Gribben Day To honor the strength and courage of a classmate’s battle with neurofibromatosis, Levittown’s Division Avenue High School designated November 1st as Bailey Gribben Day. In honor of this occasion, the junior and senior classes, student council and Cooking Club organized fundraisers, while the Quarterback Club contributed Snack Shack proceeds from the Friday night game to the Children’s Tumor Foundation, an organization which takes a comprehensive approach to improving the lives of those affected with NF. The highlight of the evening came during the halftime festivities, when Bailey was presented with an honorary game jersey on behalf of the Division Avenue High School football team. “Through his bravery and determination, Bailey has proven to be an inspiration to the Division Avenue High School and entire Levittown community,” said Principal Joan Lorelli. NF is an illness characterized by a set of distinct genetic disorders that cause the growth of tumors along various nerve types. The disease can also cause the enlargement and deformation of bones, curvature of the spine, and the growth of tumors
on the brain, cranial nerves and spinal cord. Fifty percent of patients with NF also display learning disabilities. High school junior and student council member Bailey Gribben is the national ambassador for the Children’s Tumor Foundation and has been honored as an NF Hero and a member of the 2013
Racing4Research team, taking him to the Rolex 24 Race in Daytona, Fla. last year. Bailey devotes much of his time to the Children’s Tumor Foundation and, through his fundraising efforts, has raised over $25,000 for the foundation and NF research over the past several years.

Ride For Life Donation University for the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence and Stony Brook neuroscience research in search of a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride for Life has slated $500,000 for Stony Brook research and clinical trials spread over a five-year period, ending in 2017, which is matched by the Simons Foundation, providing a total impact of $1 million for
the effort. Pendergast emphasized that an ongoing focus of the organization is to support research that can lead to clinical trials of new treatments against ALS that improve upon current treatments, slow down the disease process or cure ALS. “Neuroscience is getting ever closer to the goal of
finding new approaches to treating ALS and other devastating neurodegenerative diseases,” said Dennis Choi, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology and Director of the Neurosciences Institute. “With Stony Brook’s expertise in neuroscience research, we hope to contribute importantly to this global effort.” In 2014, the Ride for Life will provide additional funds to other organizations in the region, expanding services such as home nursing care and handicapped loaner vans designed to make mobility for patients and their families more manageable. Funds for the organization’s “Care for Life” program, which provides a one-time grant to support home respite care, will be increased per individual patient recipient. The Ride for Life will also continue its support of Long Island high school seniors who have a family member affected by ALS with its college scholarship program. Some 40 high school students have received scholarships over the past six years. Next year $6,000 in scholarships will be announced sometime in February. Most of the funds generated by the Ride for Life organization can be attributed to the annual Ride for Life event that occurs during ALS Awareness Month each May. The 2014 event begins on May 5. Prior to that, the Ride for Life will hold its Bike Trek, a multi-length bicycle fundraiser that courses through the Stony Brook University Campus on April 27th.

The Ride for Life Organization, which raises funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has earmarked $160,000 for Stony Brook University in 2014 to support ALS research and clinical care. A portion of these funds ($100,000) will be the latest installment from the Ride for Life to support the development of ALS clinical trials at the Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute. The pledge is in conjunction with the match from the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant. The $60,000 slated for clinical care services at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, an ALS Association Certified Center providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients, will come directly from the ALS Association but is based on funds available from the Ride for Life. “Without the cooperation and support of the Stony Brook University community, the Ride for Life would not have achieved our unbelievable level of success,” said Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient and advocate, and Founder and President of the Ride for Life. “The ALS community is grateful for what Stony Brook University has helped us achieve.” Since its inception in 1998, the Ride for Life has provided more than $1.7 million in funds for ALS research and $1.1 million to support ALS clinical care and patient services nationwide. During this period, more than $700,000 has been donated to Stony Brook

The Season Of Giving In the spirit of giving and supporting others in the community and the world at large, the Student Advisory Council at Bellmore’s Charles A. TEACHER HONORED - Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad (left) presented an official Town of Hempstead Certificate of Recognition to Mrs. Sue Graham (center), a teacher at Abbey Lane School. Mrs. Graham was honored for her life saving efforts when she recognized that a boy in her third grade class was choking on a munchkin he was eating at a class birthday party. Mrs. Graham immediately checked with the boy, asked if he was choking, and when he was unable to speak, she performed the Heimlich Maneuver. Her quick response ultimately saved this young’s life.

(NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home.
