Environmental Study Students from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute are collaborating with their peers across the island on an ongoing study that could help to reduce the long-term environmental and biological impacts of pollution. The joint project has teen scientists studying heavy metals in the local environment, to determine their effect on living organisms such as plants, oysters and

insects. The Doshi STEM students met recently with students from Southampton and Shelter Island high schools to organize, analyze and compare data. The Nassau BOCES scientists combined their findings from Caumsett State Historic Park and a local superfund site (a federally sanctioned pollution cleanup site) with those of their Suffolk County

peers, who conducted testing in Peconic Bay and the Shinnecock Canal. With the help of Brookhaven National Laboratory environmental scientist Dr. Keith Jones, students further analyzed their findings with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), an accelerator facility at Brookhaven Lab that produced beams of x-rays and other wavelengths of light used by researchers

Getting access to a cutting-edge facility like NSLS, where scientists compete for experimental time, is a rare scientific opportunity for these high school scientists. The NSLS ceased operations in September 2014 in advance of the opening of the new NSLS-II at Brookhaven. Later this year, students will present the results of their research to an audience of parents, principals and district superintendents. Once the project is complete, the institute and its partners will look at the possibility of having the findings published. “This project gives our students a glimpse into real science,” said Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Instructor Jennifer Galasso. “The scientific community is large, and communication is essential. Our ultimate goal is to expose these

students to STEM careers and give them a realistic experience in the research side of science.” “I enjoy working with these students,” said Dr. Jones, an environmental scientist who worked with the students at an x-ray beamline at NSLS. “We have a bunch of really smart kids and smart teachers on Long Island, and I’m really impressed by them all. I see this program as something cooperative, where I gain a lot of insight from the students and their teachers. It’s a real scientific collaboration.” “We’re actively involved in the scientific process,” said Baldwin High School ninth grader Lauryn Lee, who is in her first year at Doshi STEM. “We’re working with the NSLS, and you don’t usually get to do that below the college level. It’s exciting to compare our data with other schools,” she went on. “It gives us a wider range of sources and

more information to work with.” “It’s really interesting discovering the pollutants in our environment and figuring out how they affect us,” said classmate Meghna Girdhar, a Hicksville High School ninth grader. “Once you know what’s there, you can determine where it’s coming from. There’s a lot we can do with the information we’ve collected.” While the main goal is education, Ms. Galasso believes that there is an even wider benefit to this project. “Working collaboratively gives us a bigger picture of Long Islanders’ impact on their environment,” she said. “We’re answering important questions, such as, ‘How is this affecting us, both now an in the long run?’”

The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

the aspiring dancers sat down with members of Pilobolus for an inmate Q&A, where they discussed the life of a professional dancer, career prospects and the steps they need to take to become successful. The Master Class gave LIHSA students the opportunity to enhance their skills and put their abilities to the test. The teen dancers learned from professionals in one of the world’s premier modern dance companies. In their more than 30-year history, Pilobolus has performed

Bowling Green Gives Back Students at Bowling Green Elementary School collected nonperishable food items during November for its annual Thanksgiving season food drive. Members of the Bowling Green K-Kids

club spearheaded the food drive, under the direction of fifth-grade teacher and club adviser Richard Santer. Through the generosity of students, a variety of canned and boxed goods, along with other items, were

collected. Bowling Green students and members of Girl Scout Troop 3182 also donated Thanksgiving food baskets for the cause. Students helped package the food items, which were donated to a number of local families.

For the last few years, members of the Bellmore School District Board of Education and central administration have invited seventh-graders from Grand Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District to meet with them and discuss

their transition from Shore Road School. Held prior to the November 18th meeting, the Bellmore alumni shared their current experiences as middle schoolers and offered feedback on areas they felt they were well prepared for, as well as the areas

they believed the district could improve upon, in order to create a smooth transition from sixth to seventh grade. To conclude the program, seventh-graders revealed their favorite elementary school memories and talked about their favorite teachers as well.
